IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.

Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).

Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

Mastodon, we have a problem.

@Teri_Kanefield: I am beginning to think I waste my time and energy on social media... I came back to read my comments... and really, I feel ill.

@Popehat: ...find me on Bluesky... less like I'm likely to get screamed at...

@mmasnick: Same is mostly true for me.

@mattblaze: Getting close to joining you... The yelling here is getting to be a bit much.

[Edit to clarify NOT all are considering leaving]

Subject: What's going on with Meta?

To: @Gargron, @ruud, @jerry, @supernovae, @stux, @trumpet, @kev and other large instance admins

Rumors are tearing this place apart out here about secret deals with . The latest is that Meta has held meetings with some of you and they will federate with large instances under contracts providing financial support (1) (2).

This is a time for leadership, not silence. Please, what's going on?

Might be wrong here, but seems like this may be a bigger deal than a clerical error as is being widely reported:

Rejected and ‘returned for correction’: Docs for Trump’s $175M bond get bounced >>> https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/rejected-and-returned-for-correction-docs-for-trumps-175m-bond-get-bounced/

It may be that the bond company didn't report their financials because they have insufficient collateral to secure a bond of this magnitude. In which case the bond is no good, Trump doesn't have a bond, and he is out of time.

Let's see how this gets resolved...

Clarification

You do not have to worry about your mastodon.social (m.s) account being defederated.

There is a well meaning, but misleading post currently promoted that suggests you should move your m.s account because:

  1. "Instance admins are considering defederating them"
  2. "Their admin is making spam accounts easier to create."

Very few, if any, instances are considering blocking m.s, and the recent spam attacks are worthy of sober discussion, not hyperbole. [more]

So, lots of reports of abuse and bias on Mastodon today stemming from the Middle East conflict. Perhaps this heightened level of hostility derives from the fact this platform skews left, but these issues divide the left. It's kind of new for us. Whatever the cause, hate speech, antisemitism, islamophobia, racism and personal attacks are never called for and will probably get you blocked or banned. Let's commit to zero tolerance for this garbage. We're better than this. Be kind to each other.

So, let's get this straight. Elon Musk decided he had the authority to cause a strategic Ukrainian military offensive operation to fail. An attack presumably coordinated with the US. And Elon Musk shut down communications once the operation was already in motion resulting in a Ukrainian defeat. Ukraine is now in the position that military actions are subject to Elon Musk’s approval. Let that sink in.

This whole federating with Threads thing has never made any sense and now we see it is very likely they have just been playing us the whole time. Let's stop falling for this nonsense and get back to building great open social media.

Spirited debate today on Mastodon about the new opt-in search capability. Some people think it should be opt-out. Whatever you think about this, perhaps let's all just step back and appreciate that a complex requested feature has been added which will fundamentally change the utility of Mastodon for academics, scientists, journalists and organizations as well as ordinary users. Finding it is possible to rely almost entirely on Mastodon for news during this dynamic time, and that it delivers a much more sober coherent blend of information.

Here's how...

  1. Create a List for "News"

Click Lists on the right >>> Type "News" in the box >>> Click "Add list" >>>
Click "News" below >>> Click on little slider bars top right >>>Toggle "Hide these posts from home"

>>>> Edit: Added below from the replies a few more News and a large list of Media accounts.

OK, seen about a dozen posts today that start with:

"When federates with the fediverse..."

They go on to imagine some wonderful or awful scenario where the floodgates are open and becomes another app like or .

Maybe.... but what you are envisioning is really very unlikely. Threads is entirely algorithm driven. How's that going to work? Plus they have no interest in letting their captured users escape.

Be careful with these assumptions.

So it begins. Critics like astronomer Prof. Sam Lawler @sundogplanets have been calling attention the many horrible aspects of Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink system (https://theconversation.com/an-astronomers-lament-satellite-megaconstellations-are-ruining-space-exploration-215653).

Perhaps the greatest threat is for a Kessler Syndrome event, wherein these terrible little satellites, lose control and start smashing into each other, creating a cascade of destruction that closes off space for generations.

What if somehow starts pumping ads and promoted content into the ?

The latest "hot-takes" article on (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/07/fear-loathing-and-excitement-as-threads-adopts-open-standard-used-by-mastodon/) suggests that Meta is still working out some 'small details', like:

  1. Account migration
  2. What Threads content, "including, potentially, the role of ads" will be broadcast out into the Fediverse
  3. How Fediverse users will be able to see or interact with Threads

Can all instances at least commit that pushing ads at us is a step too far?

mastodonmigration, (edited ) to random
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

When you post on Twitter(1) or Bluesky(2) you grant them a broad perpetual license to use, modify, and sublicense your content. You effectively make them co-owners of your content. They can mine it and monetize it. They can even sell it. When you post on Mastodon(3) most instances take no license at all. That's right, they tell you what they are doing with your content—storing posts and delivering them—but no license.

M = Meta

B = Blocks Meta

  1. A boosts B's post. Can M see B's post?
  2. A replies to B's post. Can M see B's post? A's reply?
  3. A boosts M's post. Can B see M's post?
  4. A replies to M's post. Can B see M's post? A's reply?
