If you are looking for assistance in trying to interact with pages found on instances other than the one on which you have an account, here is what I believe is available so far....
Now with more and more #instances upgraded to version 4.2.0 of #Mastodon, you can compare full text #search on different ones: Having multiple accounts, I did β and yes, the differences are rather big.
Once again it seems clear, the bigger your instance the better for finding content in the #fediverse. Especially for journalists, this also implies, that an instance by your organization might not be the best idea. Something like journa.host could make more sense.
I'm super excited to share a conversation I had recently with #FastForward program member @unascribed.
Una is the creator of #Jortage, a communal storage pool for #Fediverse instances. The project helps admins here on #Mastodon and beyond keep costs down by pooling resources and de-duplicating content storage across the 70+ #instances that use it.
I would like to suggest that developers consider as much flexibility when trying to interact with links/handles from off-instance and off-kbin (e.g. lemmy) as possible. I would like for it to work on lemmy in a similar fashion....
Who can see my posts? I am super curious as to how far this #activitypub can travel? Learning the #fediverse is interesting but a tad confusing for the laypeople like me. If anyone has an analogy do share. Visualizations help. #mastodon#server#instances
So these are the numbers of people who --> could <-- have seen the hashtags you've used, hashtags being the primary way people find posts from people they don't know
OK: this all depends on if they're --> following <-- those hashtags (which I guess being included in this stat would imply) and if they're paying any attention to them
I don't know what this tells you, but that's a pretty good number of people from the times I've looked up hashtag traffic in the past
I am on mastodon.gardensoul.org, but the instance has been down for almost a full day now without any notice or status update. While I hope it'll come back, might be good to have a plan b.
I have a #mastodon question: what is a good server for a #book / #design blog account? It would be a mix of automatic *and *manual posts. I personally defaulted to mastodon.social but is there somewhere else more appropriate for my website? #fediverse#mastotips#feditips#instances
Given my ethos is #Greens, i tend to recycle & minimise waste. Thus this stale reheated blowie-bloated Intro is lazily rehashed, with only minimal tweaks, from the plethora of other #Mastodon, #Firefish & #Friendica fediverse #Instances whose various doorsteps i've darkened since Nov 2012.
Today, after weeks & months of indecisively weighing Pros & Cons, i've finally, formally, perpetrated my latest #FediHop. Sorry about that; i'll try not to wee on the carpet.
I wonder if a new introduction is really needed? I mean, i'm still me, for worse or worserer π My original intro afaik remains at https://fosstodon.org/@dropbear42/109318341169759339, with subsequent variants scattered all over the fediverse now. Sorry about that.
I suppose that hypothetically, if i were to do another Intro, i might mention that typically i'll mumble, grumble & mutter about various topics including #FOSS, #Linux in all her glory & fun, #politics, #RWNJ ghastliness, #environment, our self-induced #ClimateCrisis, random whimsical thoughts, #LGBTQI & particularly #Trans stuff.
Sooner or later, my view will pop up here & there that #religion, #capitalism & #patriotism are historically + currently at the heart of most human misery & devastation. I also probably won't be able to resist frequent quips about & allusions to fabbo #MontyPython & #HHGTTG stuff. Did i mention #DoctorWho?
No, on second-thought, i really think another Intro is unnecessary, redundant, tautologous, unwarranted & superfluous, not to mention shamefully gratuitous, so i certainly shan't bother doing one. Silly idea altogether. Sorry about that.
Do you like the idea of a free, decentralized social media? Then make the move today. Simply use the built in migration feature and move from mastodon.social to one of the smaller servers.
You can choose a server that has a theme that fits your posting habits, a server local to where you live or a generalist server in your language.
Does anyone know of any Masto #instances that are music-focused? I already follow the requisite hashtags but I would also like to follow more local feeds specific to #music, #musicians, #indiemusic, etc.
hello all! i've been on #mastodon for almost a month apparently (wow, really?), and i'm happy to report that this is really starting to feel like it's my new online community. i like it here.
now when i registered, i was less familiar with how #instances work and what it really meant... i picked one that seemed relevant to my interests (techhub.social), and on the one hand, i feel like it doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot because of federation.
but people seem to have strong opinions about their instance! i don't have any issue with techhub, but this #instance itself isn't really what makes me feel like i'm part of the greater mastodon community, so to speak. it just happens to have "tech" in the name.
all this to say, does anyone have any insight on whether it's worth it for me to migrate to a different instance? pros/cons? suggestions for a particular instance?
or maybe i'm overthinking it, and i just stay on techhub since i can still see the rest of the #fediverse from here!
Have the need to be federated but the relays fill your server with a bunch of crap that's irrelevant to your interests? Fine tune your own #relays with https://relay.fedi.buzz
Been hunting around for instances that have a high character limit. If youβre aware of any that have a high limit and a good local community please let me know. Those Iβve come across are indicated below and Iβve just discovered
So anyone: if you moved #instances and therefore fell off my #lists that I manually check to see what's going on with people, I did not mute you!
I just happen to follow a Niagara Fall's worth of accounts (over 5K) and haven't seen you whizzing past. LMK you are still there if I haven't seen you in a while!
YSK that Kbin can subscribe not only to magazines and communities, but entire instances.
This may be useful for folks looking to expand their feed. I discovered this on accident and it completely revolutionized my experience on Kbin....
kbin.social is getting the hug of death right now, consider signing up for another instance
Hey Reddit refugees! You may have noticed that kbin.social is taking forever to load because of all of the traffic it's getting....
OC firefox (and chrome) addons that help navigating instances

make URLs for communities, users etc as flexible as possible
