When you post on Twitter(1) or Bluesky(2) you grant them a broad perpetual license to use, modify, and sublicense your content. You effectively make them co-owners of your content. They can mine it and monetize it. They can even sell it. When you post on Mastodon(3) most instances take no license at all. That's right, they tell you what they are doing with your content—storing posts and delivering them—but no license.

Twitter and Bluesky (and almost all corporate social media providers) say they need a broad license to do what they do. But the truth is that they don’t need a license to publish your content—or they could take a much more limited publishing only license—but they don’t because the way they make money is processing your content, profiling you, and selling information about you to ad tech companies. For this they need to co-own your content.

People ask why I talk about elections and voting so much.

It’s because there’s always hope.

Florida Democrats flip Republican House seat in Special Election – WFTV:

@TonyStark This is why we all need to vote. Elections right now are not about getting what you want. They are about arresting oppression and changing the playing field to lay the groundwork for positive change. Elections are about the numbers. Getting sufficient majorities to make positive changes. It's a long game, and we need to keep fighting, even if the frustrations are overwhelming. Stay the course. Build our numbers. Win everywhere and send these lunatic fascists packing.

Yo, Twitter holdouts... 🙋‍♂️

Just suggesting now might be a good time to give some renewed consideration to leaving the social media platform you are supporting with your continued use.

We have a nice open platform here, if you want to give it a try. 🤷

You guys hip to Google's new beautifully named Web Environment Integrity (https://github.com/RupertBenWiser/Web-Environment-Integrity) thing?

Seems they want to force everyone to provide identity data to use the internet. And their justification:

"Users like visiting websites that are expensive to create and maintain, but they often want or need to do it without paying directly. These websites fund themselves with ads, but the advertisers can only afford to pay for humans to see the ads, rather than robots."

Curated Accounts

Have you tried following any curated accounts?

Curated accounts are accounts which simply select and boost posts relating to a particular subject. By following curated accounts you can receive a steady stream of posts pertaining to specific interests.

There are many curated accounts available. Perhaps the best known are the @Flipboard "Desks". Last week @newsmast introduced dozens of "Community Feeds".

This thread lists known you can follow.

So, this is really horrific...

Carbonate based marine life survival against pH >>> https://mathstodon.xyz/@maxpool/110615700703383281

"Ocean acidification will lead to a regime shift away from the key carbonate-based species and diatoms below pH 7.95 which will be reached by 2045... ocean acidification and the collapse of the marine ecosystem could also lead to the loss of most seals, birds, whales, fish, and food supply for 3 billion people."

Have you heard about Google's Web Environment Integrity proposal?

In a nutshell, websites would ask Google (or other "attester") if the browser and platform a user was using was "trusted" and reject those that are not, thus giving them an effective veto over all internet traffic. If you think this sounds like a really bad idea, you are not alone. Both Vivaldi (1) and Mozilla (2) have come out strongly against WEI (3), and widespread criticism of this plan is growing.

One thing that is really great about Mastodon is that you can spend hours on here everyday and not learn anything about pop culture. Was absolutely the least informed person at the party last night. No idea about any of the "insta" influencers or celebrity scandals. On the other hand, was so ready if anyone had wanted the straight scoop on climate change, the Trump trials, astronomy, or cute cat pictures...🤷

"Live posting" coverage on Mastodon!!!

Do you look back with some nostalgia on live coverage of breaking stories like courtroom trials or political hearings on Twitter? These threads were very popular, providing a forum for real time community engagement.

Well, as demonstrated by Laffy's @GottaLaff live posting today (https://mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/111019296871564013) of the Georgia severance motions for Chesebro and Powell, Mastodon now has the best live coverage of this type of breaking news anywhere.

Note to Twitter/X users.
(Please post or link on Twitter)

Seems like Elon Musk is going to try to start charging all of you for Twitter/X.

Perhaps you've thought of trying Mastodon in the past, but heard it was too complicated, too squishy, or something.

Actually, it is a really great social media platform that is actually very easy to use with lots of nice people and great conversations.

Maybe now is the time to give Mastodon a serious try: https://joinmastodon.org/

Zack's superb graphics clearly illustrate how climate change is literally changing our world.

His post today (https://fediscience.org/@ZLabe/111473019547564301) details how temperature anomalies are now well above the 1981-2010 average. And it keeps getting hotter.

It's ok Johnson is getting some praise after months of almost letting Putin finish Ukraine off. But these comparisons to Pence are bad news because Johnson is one of the most pro-Coup members of the House.

Pence, after letting the Jan6 coup stew and grow, at least stood up when it mattered. Johnson wouldn't. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/20/us/politics/johnson-pence-republicans-ukraine-aid.html?unlocked_article_code=1.mE0.gfE9.ccvg5rrB61MV&smid=url-share
