Way more interesting and healthy fediverse news is happening in the shadows and is barely getting discussed! Discourse has federation between different instances of itself and other software such as Mastodon working!

Attached is a demo video from Angus McLeod via their announcement here: https://meta.discourse.org/t/activitypub-plugin/266794/117

tech is dominated by cis white dudes, and tech blogs more so. in more specialized domains (like accessibility), it's even worse.

when writing my last blog post, 90% of the resources i linked to were written by white dudes.

if you're part of a group that's underrepresented in tech, i would love to see your blog. if you don't have one, consider starting one (i can help!)

The level of engagement and expertise here continues to make me glad I moved most of my social media presence to the fediverse.

Dozens of comments on a recent post were (mostly) well-informed and helpful, or at least thought-provoking. And the trolling was minimal.

That's how it should work.

The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

People are increasingly skeptical of big centralized intermediaries controlling our life online. Some new peer-to-peer projects may do away with intermediaries all together.

"Yes, upstate."
"Plane or car?"
"Oh Jesus no! Train."
"How long will that take?"
"9 hours. But my vacation starts when I get on the train, not when I get off the plane. It's much less stressful."
"You know... I can see that..."

Folks, I may have a made a convert today. Let's be real. Driving is work, and flying is torture. A train ride, might seem "long" but did you count all the time you spend getting to the airport, the security checks? The silly rules?

The capsules that provide life support for people traveling into space and have to be absolutely reliable.

The user interface that controls an explosion.

One year ago today November 18, 2022 was the Twitter Lockout, and in one amazing day a quarter million new users flocked to Mastodon. Not everyone stayed, but a great many did. We have continued to confront disruptive growth, while striving to hold onto ideals of community, kindness and respect for each other. Is Mastodon perfect? No, but today, one year later, the state of our platform is strong. Open social media is thriving.

Davis supported a program called “Stage Door Canteen” where servicemen could be entertained by the stars. She ensured this program was fully integrated, and that soldiers of all races and backgrounds could spend time with Hollywood starlets.

You know that meme from XKCD where a whole industry is being carried from toppling by a small open source piece?

If you are in to - that piece is folks like @halla a woman who makes art software that not just wins awards but is open source Krita @Krita . She and her team carries so many folks on their shoulders its embarrassing and are they millionaires? Hell no. They are just making an industry leading art application that you can have for free - OR if you choose pay a little bit for!

If you ever see a single person bitching about sex workers advertising on mastodon with the premise that it's "meant to be an ad free space" please tear them a new one.

The circle of safe social media platforms for sex workers keeps growing smaller, mastodon may be one of the only places we have left.

Please don't kick us out too.

Hey folks, a gentle reminder to offer some kindness right now as appropriate.

I know folks are getting their laughs in with and the migration here and elsewhere happening extremely quickly once more. Just remember...

A ton of people are watching the communities they built crumble. Job stability for many people, particularly sex workers, artists, and other creatives are in extreme jeopardy. Some people who need crowdfunding to live are currently terrified of what happens next.

There are valid reasons to hate but remember to not be mean to people sad about its demise. There is an appropriate way to balance our reactions to this news.

For people new to the fediverse/mastodon: there are some strong customs and strong personalities. I can make a few important quality of life recommendations to give you a more pleasant experience:

In your account settings, go to filters and add a filter to block the following words:
Nazi
Fash
Fascism
Fascist
Twitter
Reddit
Elon
Musk
Defederate
Fediblock

There’s a lot of name-calling and protracted and unproductive discussions using these words. Certainly it’s up to you, but this is my recommendation.

We strongly encourage you to add alt text to any images you post, and if for some reason you do not, you’ll likely be met with many replies all reminding you, with varying levels of intensity, that you forgot. I recommend blocking any account who is rude about it.

Some times you may post something important to you that causes others to be uncomfortable without a content warning. Similarly, you can expect replies of varying politeness asking you to “add a CW”. Things that are patently offensive or not safe for work definitely should have a content warning for obvious reasons, but other than that, use your discretion. Again, I recommend simply blocking people who are too aggressive in their replies related to CWs.

Follow your instance’s rules.

You will rightly be bounced for expressing hate, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or unwanted harassment. There is no place for that - don’t do it here. I can’t tell you what to think, but if you want to post hateful or harassing content, you should find another platform somewhere else. It isn’t hard to be kind. Or at least not an ass.

The fediverse is all about delegating control to instances and end users. We have many tools available, like muting and blocking accounts, and blocking entire instances, as well as muting conversations. These are very useful to have a good time on the fedi.

Be well and be kind.
