When we warn the real threat of AI is how it’s used against people in the present, not the fantasies that some day computers might think for themselves, this is exactly the kind of thing we’re talking about: health insurers using AI to deny care.

As Hyperloop One shuts down, we need to remember that the Hyperloop was never meant to be built.

Elon Musk’s goal was never to transform transportation for the masses, but to stop or delay high-speed rail from reaching North America. Sadly, he succeeded — and we all lost as a result. While the rest of the world moved forward, the US remains stuck in the past.

The Hyperloop was never meant to be built. Elon Musk admitted it was all about fueling opposition to California’s high-speed rail project so it would get canceled.

He never planned to improve transportation; he just wants to keep people trapped in cars.

Germany’s AfD is so extreme it was kicked out of the far-right grouping in the European Parliament last month, but Elon Musk thinks their policies “don’t sound extremist.” That’s because he’s also a fascist.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has made $1 billion from the company. Earlier this year he laid off more than 10,000 workers.

Hard to think of a better example of inequality in tech and the wider economy.

Microsoft to lay off more employees months after letting 10,000 workers go Amazon, Google and other large technology companies have also scaled back this year after having added headcount rapidly to meet rising demand during the Covid pandemic.

The Luddites weren’t backward technophobes. They saw factory owners using tech to degrade their livelihoods and they fought back — first by trying to negotiate, then writing to Parliament, and finally smashing the machines.

As workers today organize and strike over bosses using digital tech to upend their industries, there’s a lot we can learn from the Luddites’ story. I was thrilled to dig into it with @brianmerchant!

Yesterday Justin Trudeau revealed that agents of the Indian government murdered a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. When Canadian Sikhs went to post about it on Facebook, the platform removed their posts as a violation of Indian law.

African AI workers, mostly from Kenya, released an open letter to Joe Biden this week asking him stop US tech companies from “systemically abusing and exploiting African workers” and to end the “modern day slavery” they’re subjected to.

The end of low interest rates is showing us what the tech companies really built over the past 15 years and it’s nothing like what their PR hacks once promised.

Everything is more expensive, more invasive, and far less innovative or improved than they led us to believe.

“The Cloud now has a greater carbon footprint than the airline industry. A single data center can consume the equivalent electricity of 50,000 homes. At 200 terawatt hours annually, data centers collectively devour more energy than some nation-states.”

🚨 THE RESULTS ARE IN 🚨

After losing to Peter Thiel in last year’s contest, Elon Musk takes the title of WORST PERSON IN TECH 2023!

We only wish we could reward him with a one-way ticket to the sun 🚀☀️

Richest man in the world wants to jail democratic socialist councillor who doesn’t serve his personal interests.

There needs to be a full-scale assault on the power of billionaires. Otherwise, democracy’s days are numbered.

For years, the media built up Elon Musk and got the public to buy into the myth of his genius. Now the truth of who he is can’t be hidden and changing how they cover Musk isn’t enough.

The media failed us. They not only need to inform the public about the harms of Musk’s empire, but change how they cover the entire tech industry so another grifter can’t replicate his rise. They owe us nothing less.

Now he’s doing the same to Twitter, but is surrounded by sycophants who can’t tell him it’s a bad idea.

Silicon Valley billionaires are drawing a line: you’re either a techno-optimist who won’t question them or an enemy they’re ready to fight.

In his new manifesto, Marc Andreessen embraces faith and fascism to distract from the harms the tech industry has caused and justify the power and wealth of the tech elite. It shows why a renewed Luddite movement is absolutely necessary.

lmao, the US military keeps accidentally sending highly sensitive information to email addresses in Mali because they write .ml instead of .mil. The Dutch company managing Mali’s domain has collected 117,000 emails this year alone.

Control of Mali’s domain is about to revert to the Mali government, at which point it can collect all those emails. It’s a close ally of Russia, and could theoretically pass on information.

I’m begging the media to stop repeating tech companies’ misleading framings of their products.

Elon Musk’s grandfather “believed that apartheid South Africa was destined to lead ‘White Christian Civilization’ in its fight against the ‘International Conspiracy’ of Jewish bankers and the ‘hordes of Coloured people’ they controlled.”

Damn, why didn’t Ashlee Vance or Walter Isaacson mention that part?

Tech CEOs have plans for hundreds more hyperscale facilities in the coming years, but activists around the world are fighting back to protect their communities and force us to ask who really benefits from the future Silicon Valley is building.

The threat we face from AI isn’t being turned into paperclips by intelligent machines. It’s tech companies using those fictional stories to justify remaking the world to power and cool massive data centers so they can try to fulfill their AI fantasies and keep investors happy.
