There's a crew forming on SocialHub to update and expand the aging ActivityPub homepage, making it a more informative portal for anyone wanting to learn about the open standard that powers the fediverse. Anyone keen to pitch in?:

"It turns out, having the world’s biggest advertising company make the most-popular web browser was about as smart as letting kids run a candy shop."

, 'Goodbye, Chrome: Google’s Web browser has become spy software'

Maybe governments need to pass laws against browser companies starting advertising businesses, and advertising companies owning or funding web browser development?

Next time some well-meaning but history-blind Pākeha asks why Māori are still banging on about colonisation that happened a century ago, sit them down with No Māori Allowed.

"The documentary... reveals that from 1920 until the early 1960s, Māori [in Pukekohe] were barred from public toilets, segregated at the cinema and swimming baths, refused alcohol, haircuts and taxi rides, forced to stand for white bus passengers and barred from schools."

PeerTube is a fantastic project. But its UI is designed around people creating "channels" for publishing video regularly to an audience, as a lot of people do on ThemTube. A lot of the PeerTube UI assumptions don't make sense if what you want is a video library, more like Vimeo. A dedicated host for videos (and other bulky media files) to be embedded elsewhere, or just shared within a group.

Does anyone know an actively maintained free code project designed for that?

Public service message to everyone using :

  1. Mastodon is not the only software used in the fediverse. There are many other options you can try, while still interacting with the same people.

  2. Mastodon is not where most of the innovative fediverse design happens. All those features you want, like quote posts and better search? Other fediverse apps already have them.

  3. Sometimes all you need to do is use your Mastodon account with an app that isn't the "official" one.

The real sticking point in implementing portable accounts/ nomadic identity in the ActivityPub branch of the - like what Zot and AT Protocol offer - is its implications for how moderation works.

"The hard part however, is the social one: we collectively need to agree that the identity resolution layer is infrastructure and not somewhere moderation actions should take place."

When I was involved in starting a volunteer-run community newspaper in the late 1990s we built and maintained our own website, which contained full copies of all our issues. How did the web get so mystified and inaccessible that community groups - and even businesses - now rely on FarceBook and other corporate providers to host their web presence?

I’m keen to facilitate a series of monthly, online meetups about fediverse development.

What we’ll need for each meetup is;

  • 3-4 people willing to give a short talk with Q&A. I’d like to have a balance of technical, UX, and organisational topics

  • an MC

  • a conference server, ideally with support for livestreaming and hosting recordings for later viewing.

Anyone keen to help with this? More details here:

"When more than 15 percent of your words (except verbs and proper nouns) are three or more syllables, readers work with difficulty to understand your message. To reduce larger words, consider these tips: a) Use about instead of approximately; use rather than utilize; b) Convert nouns ending in –ion into verbs. Use “We considered ...” instead of “We took into consideration ...”; c) Replace endeavor with try, aggregate with total, and optimum with best."

#TIL about #ActivityPods:

Can anyone recommend a Free Code platform for collaborative authoring?

I'd like to be able to write a book in a sort of wiki - with a wiki page for each book page - which trusted contributors can edit. Plus an ability for anyone to comment on each page, using an account on the platform.

Bonus points if the WIP is federated over ActivityPub, and people can use their fediverse accounts to comment. Allowing a broad range of contributions while using fediverse moderation tools to reduce noise.

In fact, there is a great deal of commonality between leftist critiques of surplus extraction under classic industrial capitalism, and the ways in which digital platforms extract economic rents today."

"But if that money goes into the wages of low-income workers, we know that all of it will go back into the local economy because research shows that those workers spend 100% of their payslip. Actually, they spend 106% of their payslip, but that’s a whole other story. So the best way to stimulate the local economy is to put the money into raising the lowest wages. That means more money for more jobs."

Today I started a list on the fediverse.party wiki, of services that offer managed hosting;

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/wiki/Hosting-services-offering-managed-fediverse-servers

If you see anything there that needs correcting, or you know of any services that are missing, or you think something shouldn't be there (eg I found a remnant website of a dead service), please let me know.

Inevitably my web searches found a few existing lists. I've added them to my list too, and I'll be reaching out to their maintainers to see how we can cooperate.
