Light streamed through the windows, flowing like water into the room and filling it with a rich and satisfying warmth.

She leaned toward the light, into the light, seeking to capture that glowing warmth onto her skin and from there, to absorb it into her very being.

How gloriously contented it made her feel!

I made an azalea and rhododendron water bowl bouquet for the Mother of the household. :) The cat insisted on having a drink, of course.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! ❤️ 🌺

The Home Office will launch a surprise operation to detain asylum seekers across the UK tomorrow..
Officials will hold refugees who turn up for routine meetings at immigration offices & also pick people up nationwide.
They will be immediately transferred to previously prepared detention centres & held to be put on later flights to Rwanda.

Anyone who takes part in this disgusting operation is breaking international law.

"Police in Scotland have been put on alert because of the high risks of street protests and attempts by pro-refugee campaigners to stop detentions.

Local communities in Scotland have twice prevented deportations by staging mass protests on Kenmure Street in Glasgow, in May 2021, and in Nicolson Square, Edinburgh, in June 2022."

We need the spirit of Kenmure Street across the UK.

@junesim63 @spytfyre what we really need is a hashtag to coordinate responses to the dawn raids. I suspect someone's already organising some sort of response tree, but does work pretty well

Interesting to see how a candle pollutes the air in my living room. This is from Sunday night.

The top graph shows a sharp peak of particulates in the air when I blew out the candle. The other two show organic compounds and CO2 building up slowly and falling after the candle is out.

So, not good for air quality then! 😅

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@ochaos They're air quality meters by a company called Airthings. The graphs are generated by their dashboard web app.

I bought one originally when I rented a basement apartment and wanted to check for radon. I still keep them around because I get a phone notification when the air quality is bad and I need to open a window or crank up the ventilation. 😁

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@ochaos This one has two sensors for 1 and 2.5 micron particles, which may help? I'm sometimes surprised to see what triggers them. I can't always identify the source either.

Blowing out a single candle generates a sharp and high peak on both, so it's pretty sensitive.

#adulting question: De-smellifying trash cans, specifically ones exclusively for litterbox waste?

I got some really good tight-sealing trash cans that control the smell very well, except they're SO well sealed that the inside is like...nuclear. Tried spraying one down on the inside with some Method cleaner and didn't seem to matter much. Airing it out with the windows open, also limited effect.

@SirTapTap Hope you don't mind my responding to an old post (I had to see more photos of your kitties!)

I use an old Tidy Cats litter bucket, which has a lid, for old litter. It stops the smell when closed but doesn't seal perfectly so it doesn't get nuclear (in my experience).

I also use plastic bags each time I scoop the box, and tie them so the smell is mostly confined to in the bag.

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@zorinlynx Unfortunately I have 4 boxes out now on 2 floors, I can probably cut down to 3 but I'm not sure I can get to a situation where it's practical to just scoop directly into outside trash or use something ugly

Think I'm going to deep-clean the ones I have now and just accept that two cans are like, ruined since they're the litter box cans

Sucks because I got nice expensive trash cans that look good but they hold the stink way too well for better or worse

Alright somebody VacuumPill me

I need a DEEP clean, general purpose vacuum but especially for cat hair in rugs. I have robo vacs, I have a cordless stick vacuum for quick cleanups, I have a carpet cleaner I hope to use as little as possible.

Seeing suggestions for this though it looks...interesting. Pricey but not quite as bad as I expected for "high end". I'd say this is my absolute ceiling and it better change my life &last 10+yrs

I just found out that in the past few months there has been work happening in @gnome to allow for encrypting user home directories using homed : https://thisweek.gnome.org/posts/2024/02/twig-136/#home-encryption

It appears as though this would put each home directory inside its own LUKS container that would be locked when the user logs out or the hardware suspends. This would be a major improvement to the security profile of on the desktop!

Currently, on most systems (including Linux) regular user data is only effectively protected by system encryption when the hardware is completely turned off, but not when it is suspended.

Do "stick" vacuums have standard chargers or at least standard mounting holes? I want to mount up the charger so I can hang the vacuum up in the closet but I don't want to re-mount every time I get a new vacuum

I know it's just a couple holes in drywall but I'm baby

hirvox,

@SirTapTap Nope, they're all different. But the wall charger usually hides the old holes.

SirTapTap,

Anyone know of some good WiFi wall sockets that would work with Home Assistant?

I'd like some plugs to control some lights around the house or some other bits

Any home automation tips welcome!

@hazz223 Shelly. I've got several dozens of them at this point. They work really quite well.
The only regret I have is that for a few appliances, I should instead have replaced the circuit breakers directly. That'd be even neater.

A friend who served w/some of the most experienced feminist negotiators in the world as a key lobbyist for U.S. commitments to IHR agreements like the Vienna conference & Beijing Plan of Action, sends me this statement “signed by many of us who actually worked to get rape recognized as a weapon of war…, to create mechanisms of accountability, & [set] strategies for collecting unbiased data & evidence,” re Israeli & US govt efforts to use rape to whip support for genocide.

chargrille,

Israel is using atrocity propaganda to create public thirst for genocide.

Rape & rape in war are profound human rights abuses. Not excuses to encourage other atrocities, as the NYT did with its debunked piece assigned to a pro-genocide, anti-Palestinian freelancer who served in Intel for IDF.

Israel has been repeatedly found to be lying about what happened on Oct 7, but Instead of truly investigating each of these claims, US media has sensationalized & repeated them.

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

Let me just point out the obvious, which is that you cannot fire a FREELANCER who is not one of your employees. She works as a "storyteller" for the Israeli Public Broadcasting Co.

The real question here is who will be fired from the chain of NYT editors who made the decision to give this piece to her in the first place, given her opinions, ideological commitments & background - or really, LACK of background experience.

Starting with Gettleman, of course.

Stunned there's been no retraction.
