Wool can be made without killing animals. I think we need to go back to using bamboo, wood and wool and less synthetics. But most of all, make furniture and rugs that last -- so generation after generation can use them!

What You Need to Know About

Even after an install, a project’s furnishings and finishes can leach harmful chemicals into the air for years through a process called off-gassing. Here’s how you can combat it.

by Audrey Gray

"'Okay, I want to tell you about some things,' she recalls telling her client, going on to carefully explain the dangers inherent in both flooring choices—primarily the health impacts of chemical inhalants. Not only would these flood a home during the installation of new or planks, but they would continue to gradually leach into the air for years to come—a more subtle (but dangerous) process referred to as off-gassing. Thompson didn’t want her client’s family exposed to a vapor stew of chemicals every day, least of all in the yoga space, where the whole point was to breathe deeply while near the floor.

"She offered her client some carefully sourced options such as an all-wool carpet with a natural pad, and advocated for solid, sourced wood downstairs instead of a composite of plastics. 'I thought she’d be excited,' Thompson says. 'But because of her beliefs about animal rights, I learned that wool wasn’t acceptable to her…and there were price point issues too. I thought, ‘Wow, this is a whole new level I hadn’t encountered.’”

"Welcome to what materials experts call 'one of the most complicated issues in health and wellness,' the murky and unregulated (at least in the U.S.—Europe is much stricter) relationships humans have with thousands of airborne emanating from our building materials, , , , , and even .

"'Nobody’s telling you what is coming from all those vapors mixing in the air,' says Jillian Pritchard Cooke, the founder of Wellness Within Your Walls, an education consultancy focused on dramatically reducing the dangers of off-gassing in the built environment. 'It’s up to us to understand the individual effects each chemical can have on your , your , and your cellular makeup. We need to be doing right by our clients.'

"Designers have, of course, been aware of the dangers of volatile organic compounds () for a long time, and have helped influence some wins in the marketplace, like the rising popularity of low- or no-VOC paints and the 2015 ban Home Depot and Lowe’s instituted in 2015 on toxic (a class of industrial chemicals that help make plastic bendy) in flooring.

"But the problem endures, and unfortunately, many of the worst effects of VOCs—showing up in health conditions—accumulate over long periods of time.

"One of the best arguments for incorporating pieces in design, apart from saving space in landfills and decreasing carbon emissions, is that they are far safer from an off-gassing perspective. building materials (for instance, saving the doors during a retrofit) helps too."

@DoomsdaysCW The first time I ever used a gas stove, it was in a newly built apartment building. All the appliances were new. I switched on the oven to roast something, and there was this... smell. Worse than what I expected from a normal gas stove.

I didn't know what was going on and turned it off. Did some googling... so, turned out it was off-gassing which is typical in a brand new gas stove.

You need to heat up the oven a couple of times to get rid of it before cooking with it. Yum!

samhainnight,
@samhainnight@mstdn.social avatar

@DoomsdaysCW Ventilation or air filters can help with off gassing too, as well as CO2 buildup and reducing pathogens.

Hey, prog fan(s). Did you know that the rocks on the LP covers of Topographic Oceans and Relayer by Yes join up?
I've owned the albums for 40+ years and never noticed that before. I only spotted it by accident.

Richard_Littler,
@Richard_Littler@mastodon.social avatar

While I'm at it: Apparently, cover artist Roger Dean's cat walked over his painting for the YesSongs album. He tried to paint clouds over the paw prints but they're still visible.

A painting from the Yessongs album cover. Paw prints in the sky!

SrRochardBunson,
ateriath,

@SrRochardBunson So the songs at the start of a disc technically have a higher “bitrate” than the songs at the end?

TheCoolest,

@SrRochardBunson this reminds me of how back in the day of really slow hard disk drives, some people would partition off their hard drive to have all of the system resources closer to the edge of the disks, because data around the edge gets read faster due to the speed relative to the read head being quicker than when it's closer to the middle

“Coyote” by Joni Mitchell (1976)

https://youtu.be/i4KBohkaHDE?si=J-9u8YUAWWQJsc3k

I could’ve picked any song from this record. A desert island disc for me for sure. It’s like comfort food for the ears.

Pitchfork described the album as "restless music of road and sky, narratives unfurl with driving forward motion".

Musicians such as Björk, Danielle Haim, Weyes Blood, and St. Vincent have named the album as a favorite.

It’s a record only could’ve made. ❤️

pinskal,

@innergroove
Just a great album and pick.

sudaksis,

Was up late pouring last night pouring over organizing my collection and just wanted to share the crown jewel of my treasures here. I'll never part with this one and am still so impressed with the quality of the box set. Maybe y'all would want to see more?

sudaksis,

Another older treasure (11 years ago already, wow) is the soundtrack to Indie Game the Movie, which was the seminal film that gave most people their first real look into what goes into indie game development. The film's soundtrack was made by Jim Guthrie and it perfectly captures the tone of each scene, but it is also enjoyable as an experience on its own like the rest of Jim's work.

sudaksis,

But yes, the Risk of Rain 2 soundtrack is absolutely incredible and the expansion DLC soundtrack is just as great. Besides Jim Guthrie, Chris Christodoulou's game music is what I probably have the most on lol

@exploreyourarchive @histodons is there any point in me keeping generations of photos - the printed kind? There is no one famous in our family. Would they be of any use to any archiver? To me they are just junk that my mum asked me to look after. I have no idea who they depict, most have no information. Should I 'lose' them? I have tried to pass them on but no-one seems interested. Or would there be an archive that I can pass them to?

Catholic Church representatives were before the Standing Senate Committee on Indigenous Peoples Nov. 7 to provide information on the transfer of records pertaining to the children who attended residential schools.

Two weeks ago, Senators were shocked to hear of the barriers that were being put up from accessing those records, but the committee didn’t seem too eager to push the matter.

THE FEELIES
Crazy Rhythms
2009 U.S. remastered reissue

Although I do like & appreciate the Feelies albums that followed, none captured the frenetic, wild spirit of Crazy Rhythms.
It’s one of those singular lightning-in-a-bottle type records; musical chemistry hitting its high at the right place and time.
The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness is one of my fave album openers ever, and if Fa Cé-La doesn’t get you moving, you’re dead inside.

PIXIES
Surfer Rosa
2004 U.S. Reissue

Looks like I’m having a Pixies weekend at my place.
That’s how it starts.
You throw on one, & then you throw on ALL of em.

There’s nothing left to say about Surfer Rosa. It’s all been said before. An indie masterpiece, & somehow, it sounds better with each passing year.

Instructions For Starting An Indie Rock Band From Scratch:

  1. Meet people
  2. Get instruments
  3. Buy copy of Surfer Rosa
  4. Do what they do
  5. Enjoy

Well THAT was a joyous experience!

@hilljam & I listened to a test pressing for our upcoming release of Good to Me: OMG IT SOUNDS SO GOOD.

We've made vinyl before ... several records pre-covid ... and I wasn't sure when we'd get to do it again.

But the support for Good to Me has been so strong that we were able to!

And I gotta say: WHAT A JOY. It's my favorite record we've made so far, and hearing it on vinyl is icing on the cake.

BLACK SABBATH
Paranoid
1976 UK reissue

It’s pouring out so hard, the streets have turned to rivers, and it’s legitimately unsafe to be out driving.

Dave Edmunds - Repeat When Necessary

As you may recall, Rockpile put out a bunch of records during their brief lifespan mostly not under the Rockpile name. Here's one of Edmunds' two.

This starts out with the one-two punch of Girls Talk (Elvis Costello) and Crawling from the Wreckage (Graham Parker) - Edmunds wasn't much of a songwriter, but he was an great interpreter & player.

Lot of those 16mm Brit Vids got drowned out pretty soon by the Major labels realizing MTV was a thing, and starting to give big bucks to Michael Jackson.

I was a PA on a Video for some local jazz/session player/zappa geeks thinking content hungry MTV would lap their video up when the majors announced their big plans in Billboard, which I relayed in a meeting, maybe you ought to enter it in the MTV Video contest instead. They did. They won.

I hung a shelf above my television and stereo system with the intent to keep little mini-stacks of in my current listening rotation.

MILO on the other hand, had other plans from the get-go, instantly claiming it as his “Sky Lounge”; a place from up on high where he can look down on the world, and judge us as the vapid, soulless and morally bankrupt creatures we are.

Well played Milo, you magnificent bastard.
