a remarkable fact in this great piece by devi sridhar - in 1971, 400 Dutch children died in traffic accidents. In 2021, after safety campaigns and decades of active travel infrastructure investment, child traffic deaths were 17 https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/aug/04/uk-must-follow-europe-lead-prioritising-walking-cycling-public-transport

The 7-11 Rule re safe cycling.
(thought it up fall of 2022):

  1. Could a 7 year old ride safely when with an adult?

2 . Could an 11 year old ride safely by themselves?

  1. 7x11 = 77. Would a 77 year old feel safe on a bicycle here?

Safe means:
*actually safe
*feels safe and not dangerous
*everyone 7, 11 & 77 years old feel that cycling is viable where they are needing to go.

Share everywhere please as The 7-11 Rule & get your city to do it!

This is a truly excellent blog post, one in a series about the climate crisis. However, it's more than just that. It has something for everyone and is packed full of facts and references.

Did you know that we spend £7billion a year on aviation subsidies? Or that fuel duty has been frozen for over a decade? Or even that making bus travel free for everyone would only cost £2billion?

There's some practical advice at the end too.

This news seems to have gone pretty much unremarked by anyone, but it's a huge shift in ScotGov policy delivery. Millions of pounds in funding that's currently being used to support local active travel projects right across Scotland have been quietly cut. That equates to dozens of projects and hundreds of jobs. The silence is deafening. https://www.pathsforall.org.uk/news/news-post/our-smarter-choices-smarter-places-programme-will-end-in-april-2024

Lowering traffic speeds saves lives, but it also reduces emissions in a virtuous cycle: as roads get safer, more people start to feel confident walking/cycling/wheeling, and ditch their car more often (or entirely). #ClimateAction #BikeLife #ActiveTravel #CarbonEmissions https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2023/12/in-a-win-for-the-climate-urban-speed-limits-are-dropping/

Discourse around “reducing car use” is often framed around people being “forced out of their cars”, but they need to also cover how many people have been forced into cars. Freeing more of us from car dependency with safe, simple, and clean alternatives is key to fixing the climate crisis (and cost of living crisis.) https://philsturgeon.com/unf-king-the-climate-freedom-from-car-dependency/ #ClimateAction #BikeLife #ActiveTravel #CarbonEmissions

The UK Gov is trumpeting the £101m it is going to spend on active travel in England https://www.gov.uk/government/news/101-million-investment-to-boost-cycling-and-walking-nationwide

In contrast, ScotGov has cut its active travel budget from £320m to £220m.

By the way, the population of England is 56.5m and the population is Scotland 5.4m

Which government is taking active travel and climate change more seriously? 😕

Emissions aren't the only consideration for . This nice graphic from Surrey, BC's Climate Change Action Strategy compares the operating emissions AND the public space footprint of transportation options. wins at both! (And SUVs are really bad)

I did my first ride home from the gym in the dark tonight. The fairy lights made a group of runners laugh and I noticed pedestrians pointing.
It's so silly, but I really like that it makes people smile. Hopefully it spreads a bit of positivity 😁

I had to get groceries today, so I cycled to the supermarket at the top of the hill, just so I could zoom back down with my shopping.
I pretend this is for reasons of efficiency, but really it's because my mental age is still be that of a child 😂 🚴

Advice needed
There is a consultation in my town, about proposed new cycling and walking routes.
This has happened before, and the schemes never went ahead, because motorists vastly outnumber cyclists, so there were more negative responses than positive ones.

Does anyone have any advice / experience on taking part in these consultations and some reasonable arguments I could put forward?
Thank you, friends 😊

I've advocated for the use of the terms "person walking" and "person cycling" instead of "pedestrian" and "cyclist". It may seem pedantic but it frames the way we think about and transport in general.

Compare the first Google image results for "cyclist" - a man in lycra and dark glasses travelling at speed - with "person cycling" - a woman in normal clothes cycling leisurely and smiling.

When people object to cycling infrastructure, who are they thinking of as users?

Google image for the term "person cycling" - the images are more varied and have more of a focus on leisurely cycling

Third day in a row of 40mph winds, so no cycling for me today 😭
If there were safe, separated bike lanes in my area, I'd ride; but the risk of being blown under a vehicle on these awful car-infested roads is too great. Meh.

Body of research grows that indicates the e-bike is a silver bullet for the transport ecosystem in reducing traffic & helping people become more active. Of course, mobile people stay & shop on high streets too, so not bad for the economy either:

This is a really really interesting article on cutting car use in Gent. Hoping that the councillors who implemented changes here are rewarded for their behaviour too, as so far it's the loudest voices that are being heard in Exeter https://www.globalcyclingnetwork.com/lifestyle/interviews/how-to-half-car-usage-in-less-than-a-decade-a-tour-of-gent
