Two new studies published in the journal of Science this week offer a deeper insight into the spread of misinformation on social media, offering evidence that it not only changes minds, but that a small group of committed “supersharers” — predominately older Republican women — were responsible for the vast majority of the “fake news” in the period looked at.

The studies, by researchers at MIT, Ben-Gurion University, Cambridge and Northeastern, were independently conducted but complement each other well. @TechCrunch has more.

We need to bring more attention to the university-specific demands that the students of the are making: companies invested, dollar amounts, research relationships, etc. So far, the divestment aspect seems to be lost, when it's actually the most important part.

If your project is #MIT, #BSD or #Apache #FOSS, you are now probably one of the bad guys.

If you don't know why this is bad: #Redis

Same for contributing to projects with permissive licensing.

As copyright owner of a project you can be a good guy again: switch to #GPL

Also stop contributing to other projects that won't switch, after politely explaining why you have a problem with their #licensing.

And avoid using those projects when you can.

#OpenSource

How to be evil.

  1. Find an licensed software.
  2. Distribute via Software as a Service , Charge money for it.
  3. Proxy all bug reports to the original developers. (you can make fixes, just do not upstream them)
  4. Create new features, never upstream them. (you can deal with the bug reports for these)
  5. Use revenue from step 2 to out advertise the original software, and fund step 2 & 4.
  6. Repeat Step 2-5 until original project is dead.
  7. Shutter business as profit margins decrease.

We now understand why permissive is bad for .

taught us why is important and , , etc allow corporations to enclose and steal our contributions.

's use of for targeting in , which may also use the code we donated to the commons, shows that we need to be more restrictive if we want to avoid assisting war crimes and probable .

I hope some lawyers are on this, and will help us add exclusions to protect from such use.
