OK, had to close then open new accounts on #visionontv#peertube because of #spam, the spam is starting agen - the is an update that allows you to put new accounts on ask/moderation, we need to upgrade at some point to get this.
I was thinking earlier that it would be pretty cool to have an #ActivityPub-powered app that uses something like the old #WordPress#PostFormats feature that, in turn, supports post formats that other #Fediverse services use.
For example, the app can post regular posts like this one, structured link posts that work with services like #Lemmy, galleries through @pixelfed and videos through #Peertube.
Unless #ActivityPub automatically reformats posts based on what they contain when a user of services like these receives them in their feeds? I'm not sure how this works under the metaphorical hood. 🤔
For those who didn't know (or have forgotten), there's a PeerTube channel here with videos of the talks and Q&A sessions from the #ActivityPub conference we had in late 2020: https://conf.tube/c/apconf_channel/videos
Picking through these videos is a great way to get a sense of where some of us wanted fediverse development to go, both technically and politically.
List of fedi platforms I have tried/use in no particular order:
#Mastodon
Probably most of you reading this is using it, but overall it's a fairly user friendly platform and has gotten people into the fediverse
#PixelFed
Tbh haven't used it much but it seems like it has good potential
Not my kind of thing, but for those who like things more like instagram I'd check it out
#Calckey
What I'm currently using, I really like it so far
It's beautiful and feature-rich
#PeerTube
I use it occasionally as it has some media I do enjoy, but I do wish more people would upload to it
#Funkwhale
Same issue with peertube, not having many people upload
Also felt kinda wonky to work with but may have been the instances I tried
I would like to end this by saying, try new things on fedi
It helps keep the ecosystem healthy and you may find something you like more
I clicked it and got an ad for idk what. And some popup to see if I wanted to join. I probably got tracked, though I don't have a google or youtube account.
I love it. There’s a poll ongoing about whether folks would ban a Meta (Instagram/Facebook) instance and people are like “well, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt.”
I really have no words.
Is it learned helplessness? Stockholm Syndrome? Masochism? Something else?
@aral I think this highlights the need to make ActivityPub a more diverse network where Mastodon isn't the only big player, but also things like #Castopod, #PeerTube or the efforts of #ForgeFed.
PeerTube Companion, a Firefox extension, will redirect you to a PeerTube version of a video, when trying to reach it from YouTube -- if it's available on PeerTube.
It's under heavy development, so use at your own risk.
This is great because, similar to people moving from #Twitter tk #Mastodon, we get here and don't know anyone, and it's like moving music apps. Your playlists are all gone.
So if I can move from #Youtube to #Peertube and my subscriptions are already there, it would make the move so much easier!
My most awaited project of the year, the TROM II documentary, is now finally close to its release! 😃 So I just want to share a few thoughts as to why its so interesting for me:
👉 The entire #documentary, around 5 hours long and divided into 4 parts, is made by a single person (@tio), using only #FOSS software like @kdenlive for editing, and on a #linux distro (tromjaro.com) as the main OS. This in itself is a very impressive feat! And also a shout-out to the awesome #FreeSoftware / #OpenSource community for how much it has grown. I heard this documentary is the biggest project ever made on #kdenlive so far, and making such a big documentary by a single person is no joke - took years of hard work to complete.
👉 Following a #FediFirst approach, it will be released on #fediverse platforms like @peertube first! Free for all to watch without any ads or data collection. I don't know if this will be uploaded to proprietary platforms like #YouTube, tho I'm sure #Peertube will always have top priority 😉
👉 Unlike the first TROM documentary which was released a decade ago, this one features interviews with people like @bigworldsmallsasha, @aaron, @sober_pirate, @georgi and Tio himself. They talk about their personal lives, how they grew up in this world and such, their stories are supposed to give us a larger perspective on how our current society works. I can't tell you much more until I get to watch the documentary and see how all of this falls into place 🙂
👉 No stock footage has been used in the documentary! If making a 5 hour documentary doesn't sound hard enough for you then this will do it, lol 😄 So for example if it shows some scientists looking at data in one scene, then its actual scientists looking at actual data that they work on, not some stock footage of actors pointing at screens and faking stuff. Finding real world footage like this is a time consuming task as it'd require going thorugh a lot of documentaries, videos, etc looking for the right clip you need.
👉 If you've ever read any of the TROM e-books or seen their videos before then you'll know how it goes - looking at the world from a scientific perspective, encouraging people to be curious about the world we live in and the universe that surrounds us, and perhaps most important of all, to cut through all of the social constructs we've been accustomed to and see the world for what it really is, because only if we truly understand our world can we solve the many problems that are plaguing our planet right now. To get a little taste of what TROM is about you can try watching these short videos they've released in the past:
#peertube is full of weird, fun and quirky content. With no ads. You need to dig around a bit to find the cool stuff, but that's really worth it, IMHO. Give it a try! Get lost in geeky/weird content that brings back the real internet - the internet of people! #fediverse Here's one example. https://vid.wildeboer.net/w/jqC96Yxu3CnAEx6LqT4vTo
@rabble it had better #UX and the @Gargron running it was an effective communicator at #KISS and built it out as a #4opens project alongside a healthy (white) lie about security and privacy. The rest of the projects lacked these things - Pleroma the obverse compaine was ripped apart by the #geekproblem then embraced by the right-wing. #Peertube was stuck in a good but very closed development for years. #Pixelfed is a little brother project to mastodon.
👋 Hello #fediverse! I'm going into a meeting at 4ET to talk about our newsroom's social media options.
If you think our station and other #NPR stations should have a Mastodon server or a broader presence in the #fediverse, pls boost this post. If you have thoughts, please reply, I want to hear them!
When I first found out PeerTube was using WebTorrent, I was excited by the possibility that it could play videos from a normal BitTorrent swarm. That way, video creators could store their videos on a few home computers instead of expensive S3 "cloud" storage. Turned out there were some difficulties in getting BT clients to add enough support for WebTorrent to make that work. I haven't checked for any progress on that for a while.
