The steering council's decision on PEP 703 which attempts to remove the GIL: https://discuss.python.org/t/a-steering-council-notice-about-pep-703-making-the-global-interpreter-lock-optional-in-cpython/30474

Note that this will initially be an experiment. As such, the SC is reserving its right to drop the experiment if it becomes too burdensome to support (both in CPython and in the community in general, including lack of uptake). So for all of those who have been asking for the GIL to be removed, this is very much a "put up or shut up" situation for the community to show they support this.

Folks, if you parrot opinions like "PHP is an insecure language" or "PHP has inherent security flaws" in 2024, and you can't point to specific issues with modern, current versions of PHP to back it up, all you are doing is demonstrating your ignorance.

The fact is, modern is every bit as secure, solid and performant a server-side platform as , , or many other popular languages.

Hey, I am a software developer and data scientist with experience in both fields. I mostly have experience in and and some experience in . I am really struggling to get hired anywhere because of my lack of diploma from my higher education, even though I (provably) have the skills to work anyway.

If anyone has any pointers or places I can go to I'd love to hear it. I'd love to work in either a data science job or open source software development, either locally in the central or west Netherlands or remote. Please help me get spread this around if you want to. If you want more info and have a job opening I can DM my CV.

All this dependent on whether the Steering Council accepts PEP 703.

PLEASE BOOST for visibility!

The University of Colorado Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is hiring software engineers for science data processing on the Data Systems team. We build satellite borne instruments for studying astrophysics, planetary science, earth science, atmospheric science, and many more disciplines. Data Systems typically does the ground processing of the instrument data from binary packets through to research quality science data products (think netCDF, HDF5, CDF, FITS files). Mostly we use Python but we have some Java systems and C experience is always a plus for making Python faster.

Yes, masks. In 2024. At a tech conference. It’s a beautiful thing.

datetime.utcnow and datetime.utcfromtimestamp will be deprecated in 3.12: https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/103857

If you maintain a package, now is probably a good time to grep your source code for utcnow and utcfromtimestamp to get out ahead of the deprecation warnings. 📅🕐
