fearing Lincoln’s election would lead to the national abolition of slavery (a hyperbolic, reactionary response), a series of southern states seceded from the union and formed an avowedly white supremacist confederacy of slave states. that was the cause of the civil war.
I'm a 59 year old African American woman. I've desegregated a town, a school system and many other spaces. When I discuss racism in this nation, I'm not going to ameliorate my speech for the comfort of anyone. I don't exist to comfort others about the reality of what I was born into - what we all live in together. If that's a problem for you, I suggest you embark on some self-reflection to determine what your actual role is within this system. #racism#politics#BlackMastodon #blackmastodon
We were just having a normal conversation under the warm Adelaide sun when she said, “I hate Chinese people. Hate them.”
I stared at her, wondering if she realised that I am Chinese.
I rarely write about #politics but I feel it’s important to describe the impact of rising #USChinaTensions on a “normie” member of the #Chinese diaspora. It's this: Sheer, utter frustration and exasperation.
Was away for a week visiting my parents. Don’t get to see them nearly enough, in no small part thanks to our lovely “European Values” meaning they have to jump through more hoops to come visit us in Ireland than they can manage at their age. You see, we don’t really see non-Europeans as human in Europe. They’re something less. A potential threat.
I may have an EU passport and pass for white but I never forget that. In fact, I think about it every time I miss my parents.
This just happened on the floor of the United States House of Representatives. A House Republican just referred to Black Americans serving in our military as "colored people." In 2023.
Acyn:
Crane: My amendment has nothing to do with whether or not colored people or black people or anybody can serve.
Beatty: I would like those words stricken from the record #racism. 1/...
As a registered Black voter who has had his Black-held Congressional district gerrymandered out of existence, rest assured when I tell you things aren’t as bad as you’ve heard. They’re WORSE.

#LeonardAllenCure had been imprisoned for 16 years in Florida despite being innocent. Shortly after having been freed though the efforts of The Innocence Project, he was stopped in Georgia, and shot to death.
I wonder whether he was driving a good car and the Georgia cops suspected him of stealing it.
Tech companies currently do their own "red-teaming" of products – subjecting them to tests to find potential problems, like #disinformation or #racism. But #Biden's executive order will require the government to set new standards, tools and tests for #RedTeaming – and will require companies to notify the government and share the red-teaming results for #AI products. #AIOversight
This episode of Everyday Misogyny is brought to you by academia.
Needless to say there's nothing remotely surprising or decent about his "proposal". 🤬
"How do you expect me to concentrate on what a respected academic is saying when she's got her hair down?"
"Impossible to tell whether she's Irish or Chinese because of course it's impossible that she could be both."
Every last word of this article is revolting.
If there's anything that is a clear indication why the #Manitoba Conservative Party needs to be booted from office next week...totally CRUSHED in fact, it's this series of absolutely vile, racist and colonialist election campaign billboards.
Imagine actually campaigning on your refusal to search a crime scene because the victims of the crime were Indigenous women.
After spreading “white genocide” myths and demonizing migrants, there’s no denying it: Elon Musk is a racist.
But he’s been pushing racist ideas in a less overt way for years. He dismissed racist abuse in his factories or pushed eugenic ideas about population levels. We need to reckon with why so may were unwilling to call it out sooner.
In April 1832, the Mexican government closed a loophole allowing settlers to reclassify their human chattel as indentured servants. This finally outlawed slavery, full stop.
For Stephen Austin, this was the last straw. “Texas must be a slave country,” he wrote a friend, “circumstances and unavoidable necessity compels it.”
I posted yesterday a statement from the interview linked below, in which PRRI director Robert P. Jones says that the narrative that evangelicals held their nose and voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 is incorrect. As he says, there's no evidence to back that narrative, and white evangelicals show robust support for "Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric and his anti-black rhetoric and all those related racial grievance issues."
Last night while walking my dog someone asked me if they could ‘cook my dog’ (presumably because I’m Chinese and I cook dogs). And I run into these signs every half a mile or so from Nob Hill to North Beach. Welcome to super anti racist, progressive San Francisco!
(Two months ago a lady pointed a blow torch at me and said she’d like to burn me for being Chinese. I’ve just spent thousands of dollars in therapy.)
A sneak preview of the September/October issue of Texas Observer magazine, featuring stories by Eva Ruth Moravec, Kit @oconnell, Reynaldo Leaños Jr. and @gabrielarana.
The new issue will be arriving in mailboxes, inboxes, and at select newsstands soon.
It started bc a Black security guard told some white boaters they couldn’t leave their boat docked where it was. The white boys beat up the Black guard, and then all hell broke lose w/ Black bystanders coming to the guard’s aid.
Then it got worse.
With #trump indictments, this looks like a full on class + race war is simmering, imo. Orange rapist stoking hate thru his SM today.
My strategy to learn more about party planning (from the "Idiot's Guide" series) is more like running into an author with some serious bias. #books#racism#bias#hate
African Americans have chosen to be aspirational in pursuit of freedom from oppression and injustice, as opposed to terrorism and deconstructionist thinking.
