I burned out my Shop Vac yesterday. I have a curbside pickup of another one this morning.
I prefer a ShopVac: Suction is better, wet-dry.. I learned something long ago, during a winter flood.. Don't suck up more water than you can carry. If you can't lift more than 40 lbs of water (plus vacuum), stay under 4 gallon size. 10 is too big to lift.
🎧 "One World (Not Three)" (1981) zooms me back to Summer, 1983 in DC. I DJ'd Happy Hour in the courtyard of a new office building. 19th and L-ish—outside a "Cantina."
Yuppies and Guppies and Jose Cuervo, mostly. This track made them move!
Today I wanted to try to make some kind of #Reggae thing with #AbletonNote. It's difficult as it has no dotted or swing quantise options, so I just made something straight instead. Still, I think it's pretty funky never the less. Audio attached.
You can mess with the live set for yourself if you like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vvi32von651ktua/Reggableton.ablbundle?dl=1
Speaking of intersectional and hyphenated Chinese identities, this comic by my friend Krish Raghav explores how Chinese Jamaicans were pivotal to reggae music
Fun fact: Lila Iké is from Christiana, in Manchester, Jamaica - the same parish from which my spouse's family hails. In fact their auntie lives in Christiana. It's a teeny tiny town up in the hills. Pretty fun to see someone from there making it big.
lo que ustedes necesitan hoy es escuchar un poco de #Reggae Dub a todo volumen con unas buenas bocinas o audífonos, de esas que hacen que te retumbe el alma
Bob Marley died on 11 May 1981 in Miami, Florida, aged 36, due to the spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain. His final words to his son Ziggy were: "On your way up, take me up. On your way down, don't let me down."
Marley was given a state funeral in Jamaica on 21 May 1981 that combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition.
“I’m raising funds to provide security for our brother (at)matisyahu,” Draiman, the heavy metal singer, wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Him and his family have been relentlessly harassed during his current tour. Let’s help give him some security and safety in this difficult time.”
Just learned that one of my all-time favorite songs (Rivers of Babylon by The Melodians) isn't really #reggae, but #rocksteady. I've heard the name rocksteady, but never knew it was a precursor to reggae in the late 1960s that dominated over only two years. This is great! Now I have a new rabbithole of #music to jump into! Already found Baba Boom by The Jamaicans which is also great!
