I can't meaningfully speak about the situation in the #MiddleEast , since there do not seem to be any even vaguely neutral news agency whom I could even trust to give me the facts of the situation. The disinformation is overwhelming all noise. I want the war there to end, but who is even working for peace, at this time - and who is merely fanning the flames?
But I can speak out about bigotry at home, here in Germany. And one ongoing strain of anti-Jewish bigotry here in Germany is the so-called "Schlussstrichdebatte" - dismissing the #Holocaust as a one-time aberration in German history.
But when you actually study German history - and #folklore , my own field of specialty - it quickly becomes clear that the Holocaust was unique only in its scale, not its nature. There no shortage of violent and murderous anti-Jewish bigotry.
I've touched this briefly in last year's essay, but maybe I should return to this topic, translate relevant texts and discuss them and their implications in more detail. Maybe this is a way in which I can meaningfully contribute to fighting bigotry.
I grew up in Memphis, TN. When my friends and I were old enough to drive, we loved exploring the decrepit, boarded-up stretch of South Main St. It was like a ghost town then, except for the still-in-use but severely neglected Amtrak train station and the vintage 1950s Arcade Restaurant.
About a block away, at 450 Mulberry St, stood the low-slung Lorraine Motel. The phrase "it had seen better days" was somehow both appropriate and inappropriate. We knew that was the place where the Rev. Martin Luther King had been assassinated.
That balcony. Everyone knew.
We would slow-roll past it and sometimes pause, to stare at that place, that balcony, and imagine the horror.
In 1991, a few years after I moved away, the Lorraine Motel transformed into the National Civil Rights Museum.
If you ever travel to Memphis, make sure to prioritize a visit to this museum. I experienced more emotion in that museum than any other. And I have visited museums throughout the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia, so that's saying something.
Some of the exhibits haunt me to this day. The dark, dog-house-sized replica of the space where a slave sat chained, unable to straighten their body, for months at sea. With the audio. Of the clanking chains and the screams of pain and suffering.
MLK's motel room, preserved in time, just as it was on that day.
The National Civil Rights Museum does it right. It fills you with horror, as it should. For me, that building always did.
Our job is to get out the vote. Elections have consequences. Trump, who was bigoted from the start, should never have gotten into the White House where he could put bigoted people on the Supreme Court. #supremecourt#bigotry#elections#gotv

It's interesting to me how comfortable non-Jews are telling (mostly liberal and progressive) Jews what is and isn't anti semitic. I tend to defer to the judgment of ethnic and religious groups to which I don't belong on such matters.
