"AI will be used to support 60 to 70% of our engagement activities," says a tech bro in the next table as I sip my coffee.

He goes on to talk about the limitations of influencers and how AI-generated content can help.

"You have a virtual influencer that can engage a digital audience. Why would you want to invest in a human influencer?"

🙃

Lord, that sounds like a horror show 😆

hype is 100% in Malaysia.

Also why is this topic following me?? 😆

I'm playing with just now (never done anything serious in it) and I had setup my environment recently as well (playing with different options for a linux/windows GUI that didn't need different code for each).

I saw a language speed comparison chart that listed a formula used to calculate Pi to a given accuracy. It showed a 10x difference in speed in favor of Java.

As a little end of work day jolly I thought I'd recreate that on my local machine and see.

I wasn't familiar with the formula so I used to get the formula. That took some clarification to get the correct formula out, but it got there in the end ( -1 to the power and not -1 times).

I wrote the Python version first, and then wrote the same thing in Java.

Running the test I came up with a 5x difference in Javas favor (24s for Python, 5s for Java).

Fun end to a sunday.

Part of the conversation with chatgpt to get the forumla used. Took a little back and forth to clarify the top term
Python taking about 24 seconds for 100M iterations
Java taking about 5 seconds for 100M iterations

The media is obsessed with the story of Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI” who left Google to warn us about his life’s work.

Hinton isn’t worried about the immediate harms of AI and even dismisses those concerns as not “existentially serious.” But his warnings are nothing but sci-fi fantasies that distract us from real problems. For Disconnect, I argue we should ignore him.

Google lards its search results with paid links.

Alexa won’t speak ill of Amazon.

Facebook and TikTok manipulate the content they show you.

It’s reasonable to expect that assistants sold by these or other tech companies will steer you to the products and services that make the most profit for the tech companies.

And users have no way of knowing whose interests are being favored, or how they are being data-mined.

@fsf Where can I read about the legal licensing and copyleft issues surrounding generative AI algorithms like LLMs (Large Language Models) like Chat-GPT or Copilot, trained on GPL'd source code?

I wonder if there is a need for a new license that explicitly makes training generative AI on open source code requires the AI model to be open sourced?

Does the FSF have any written opinions or educational materials related to this topic of the relationship between copyleft and generative AI trained on copyleft source code?

Two suggestions for interacting with ChapGPT and other LLMs:

  1. Don’t speak to it as if it were a person. It will answer as though it is, which can lead to confusion.

  2. Whatever question you ask, mentally preface it with the phrase, “Generate some text that sounds like a plausible answer to the following, even if you have to make stuff up.” (Because that’s what it’s going to do.)

ChatGPT does not have “a memory.” It does not “remember” anything. OpenAI is just storing data about you and your engagement with its product.

I’m begging the media to stop repeating tech companies’ misleading framings of their products.
