"In the UK discourse, it is the big UK negotiating with little India. But India is on course to be one of the biggest economies in the world – we are talking about a country that is huge and doesn’t feel the need to cut a deal."
'They need us more than we need them' is the international trade mantra... in Delhi.
" #Pakistan's climate emergency is unfolding like a horror movie where each scene is more frightening than the last. We are constantly lurching from one climate disaster to another, with no time to step back"
A Murder, a Diplomatic Dust-Up and the Risk of Impunity
Britain’s foreign secretary tweeted pablum that did not even mention India.
Without prejudging the results, Western countries should categorically stand with Canada in calling for a fair investigation of the murder and justice for those responsible. The current international silence is conspicuously loud.
Canadians deserve better from us, and so do Indians.
Anecdotal experience with right-wing news in India (relatable with my experience in the US) *
I'm visiting India and the TV news here is skewed to the right. My aging father watches these news channels in the evening and over the years, I have noticed his views shift further to the right.
The issue dujour is the escalating tensions between Canada - India and anger against Justin Trudeau. What was shocking to me today was, on one of the news channels a talking-head was trying to link Trudeau to George Soros (a typical antisemitic right-wing talking-point in the west).
It's hard not to see how the right-wingers around the world learn from each other.
On #ClimateChange and the #UrbanHeatIsland effect in developing countries blindly following the American style of "development", personal stories from people trying to cope with these both climate and architecturally magnified heatwaves.
Modi Government in Tearing Hurry to Propose but Not to Wed
If the Modi government truly wanted to implement reservation for women, would it not have passed the Bill at the inception of its takeover of state power, giving itself room to accomplish the historic deed? Badri Raina writes.
The government set a minimum export price (MEP) of $1,200 a tonne on basmati rice shipments in a move aimed at reining in domestic prices ahead of elections in key states. The move came a day after it imposed a 20% duty on non-basmati parboiled rice exports, effective immediately....
Gulab Ji Chai Walla in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. This stall was down an alleyway. It was very crowded and the tea was great. It was so good we went twice.
What I love about this photo is partially capture the motion or life of the place. Everyone is moving like clockwork, from the chai walla and server in the first photo to the man attempting to give his order. I also love a lot of small details like the glasses and khulads leaning the same way.

« Écureuils dans un platane » (ca. 1610), peinture par le peintre d’origine persane actif en Inde Abu al-Hasan, généralement considérée comme l'une des plus belles miniatures mogholes.
I saw #WhileWeWatched last night and really, really recommend it. It’s an excellent documentary about #RavishKumar, the fearless, amazing #NDTV news presenter informing viewers of the lies they are being relentlessly told in #Modi’s #India around the 2019 election. The #nationalism and #Propanda on other channels is frightening, not least because identical to rhetoric elsewhere. Kumar resigned in 2022 and now does a #YoutubeChannel, living more or less in hiding.
Paan (Betel Nut Leaf) is a popular Mouth Refreshment in entire Subcontinent, from #Pakistan, #India#Nepal to #Bangladesh
It is also popular in the Middle East, South East Asia and, as far as the Pacific!
I see that #RishiSunak is worried that people might draw the conclusion the the potential #India-UK trade deal which might significantly benefit #InfoSys - you'll recall Mrs Sunak is a major shareholder in the firm - indicates that he has a conflict of interest...
No, we don't think there is a conflict of interest, its already clear that he & his #Tory chums are running the country in their interest - there's no 'conflict', more an even more obvious illustration of #ToryCorruption, that's all!
