  1. It's been my observation that in general terms there are three moderation styles on Mastodon:

🔥 Wild West: Anything goes.

☯️ Balanced: Give users a wide berth but bans extreme content and mandate content warnings for suggestive material.

🪂 Safe Space: Tightly moderated, ban extreme content, ban aggressive content, ban pornography, require content warnings for all suggestive/adult material and language.

Should there be other categories?

What in god's name is driving this urge to "compete" with Dorsey's latest shitshow? Mastodon is meant to be an alternative, decentralised, federated system, not a competitor in a commercial environment. Twitter wasn't Mastodon's "rival".
Or is this the key to the change?
That this is all going to be for sale to our own personal Jesus Musk when the price is right?

    Coachmark,

@jcrabapple @CrazyMyra Yeah in an ideal world. I don't see that happening to be honest. Maybe if it's too hard for someone to figure out, or try to join (It's not fucking rocket science), perhaps this isn't the place for that individual. When I joined the small learning curve didn't dissuade me, and I just worked through it, read, listened, followed, boosted, etc. and I feel "comfortable" here. This seems reactionary to BlueSky, when reactionary seems unnecessary to me.

The Fediverse when any change is made or announced: episode 348348

    Eramdam,

Quote posts won't destroy Mastodon or whatever, feel free to prove me wrong if they're implemented in a dumb way (i.e without user-level controls).

Groups are fine, not something i'd use but i see nothing wrong about them.

The onboarding flow change isn't for the people who have been here for 6 years and the official apps aren't the only way to use Mastodon so who cares.

I'm more concerned about search but again, some people need it in order to be visible/reachable and as long as users can still choose to be excluded I don't see the issue.

I know we love to yell at Eugen every other week but we can't be yelling "ppl are going elsewhere!!" while also hissing like angry cats at every attempted to try to attract people. Y'all are acting like the Linux forum posters yelling at people for wanting to run Photoshop or have audio control on their distro after coming from Windows. :dont_at_me:

As someone who suffers from and , I wholeheartedly understand the importance of and the need for awareness. Before, I would just brush it off like it was nothing, THAT WAS NOT GOOD. Nor, did it do any good. It was not until I got help, started journaling, talking about my issues, that I started to break free from the darkness. There's a lot of misinformation circulating that obscures or softens Jack Dorsey's relationship to Bluesky, Bluesky to Twitter, &/or Dorsey to Musk/Twitter.

On Dec 11, 2019, Dorsey announced on Twitter that he'd started Bluesky as part of Twitter, to serve Twitter, & funded by Twitter $, "to develop an open & decentralized standard for social media." (One already existed. Clearly the goal was one he controlled.)

"The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this [Bluesky] standard."

"But the standard Twitter app isn’t the only platform whose future Musk now controls. Over the past three years, Twitter Inc. has also been funding a decentralized social networking project called Bluesky — and it finally seems close to bearing fruit. But under Twitter’s new leadership, with its original champions gone, its future prospects seem shaky. Bluesky was launched under Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s leadership back in 2019, and its initial manager was Parag Agrawal, then Twitter’s CTO and later Dorsey’s replacement. The goal was to build a decentralized social network protocol that could eventually hook into Twitter — making it interoperable with other networks unrelated to the company. To maintain independence from Twitter as a business, Bluesky was set up as an independent entity producing nonproprietary open-source work — even as it was funded by Twitter. Bluesky was formally organized as a public benefit LLC led by software engineer Jay Graber in late 2021, and as of April, it had received $13 million from Twitter."
"Bluesky has always seemed like a quirky pet cause of Jack Dorsey, and that impression has only gotten stronger over time. Dorsey imagined decentralization as a way to sidestep increasingly bitter content moderation debates among law- and policy-makers. Decentralized social networking protocols like ActivityPub (which powers Mastodon) already existed, and to the extent Bluesky has a unique vision, it reflects ideas like Dorsey’s love of “algorithmic choice” or competing social media moderation algorithms. He told Musk in a"
["Before Musk reluctantly bought Twitter, former CEO Jack Dorsey funded and spun off Bluesky, a public benefit company tasked with building an open-source, decentralized social media protocol that he wanted Twitter itself to eventually operate on. Bluesky remains invite only to access but is now starting to let in more users. After setting up my account recently, wanted to talk with CEO Jay Graber. She agreed to answer some of my questions this week for what I believe is her first interview since she joined to lead the project in August 2021."

    chargrille,
    @chargrille@progressives.social avatar

    Anyway, TL;DR

Yes, was a Twitter project & funded by Twitter, to serve Twitter as a client.

Yes, it's Jack Dorsey's project, yes he is still its funder/founder & Board Member.

Yes, he hand picked its CEO.

Yes, it can still operate hand in glove with Twitter, & Dorsey & Musk are tied by bonds of $ & affinity.

No, Jack did not make sure Jay & the project operated with transparency out in the open.

Let's use strategic intelligence in advance, for once.

in addition to showing your posts, favorites, boosts and bookmarks, it can show you some statistics, e. g. which day of the week you're usually the most active!

I STILL have a spreadsheet full of keys (all legit!) and giving them away isn't just for Christmas any more.

I'm NOT doing this to get new followers. You DON'T need to follow me to get a key. This is about generosity when the world could really use some. The only thing I'd ask you to follow is the Wheaton rule: "Don't be a dick".

11/07/23: Still going. 135 games given away so far.

To avoid keyfarmers and resellers, I have some guidelines, though.

    1. No new accounts. Sorry. You've got to have been here on Mastodon & obviously human; ie. no keyfarmers (If I don't know you, I'm checking profiles).

    2. One game per person, but please pick your top three preferred games that you want to play.

2a. "When can I ask for another key?" - Consider the counter reset, 2 months between asks.

    1. First in, first served. If your first preference is gone by the time I get to you, that's why there's a 2nd & 3rd preference.

    2. DM me with up to three games (in case your first choice is gone), with game number AND name, in order of preference (my DMs are open)

    Green: My keys
    Blue: Keys donated by @McCovican.
    Orange: Keys donated by @tojosan

Game listed multiple times = multiple keys.

We've given away 127 games now, and I'm still adding new keys.

If you don't mind boosting this post; this is my small way of trying to make the world & Mastodon a nicer place to be.
