Given all the Threads discussion there is one short thing I need to say.

The simplest tech-world thing I learned from the whole Meta in Myanmar project is that Meta is WAY more callous, deceptive, and incompetent with the life-or-death things that matter the most than even most of their critics understand.

gimulnautti,

@kissane The most scary part is that Meta’s participation to basically exciting genocide in Myanmar has been basic knowledge, for years and years.

The only echo of that I hear in tech talk today is when politicians say they ”don’t want to repeat the mistakes made with social media” on AI legislation.

But I’m afraid they will. And why? Because we humans want to create ”god” for ourselves. We want there to be an ”infallible” machine to judge us. And meta took that role, gladly.

When +972Mag revealed that Israel was using an called Lavender and trained on faulty data to decide who is or isn't a militant, and another one called Where's Daddy to track them until they were home to kill the whole family, many folks here rightfully wanted to know who was providing the servers and computer infrastructure for that.

Time Magazine now has at least part of the answer: & https://time.com/6966102/google-contract-israel-defense-ministry-gaza-war/

The Israeli Ministry of Defense, according to the document, has its own “landing zone” into Google Cloud—a secure entry point to Google-provided computing infrastructure, which would allow the ministry to store and process data, and access AI services.

@irenes @exador23 We really need get our heads around one important thing very soon or we’ll be in trouble:

These are not anymore companies in the traditional sense of the word, ie manufacturing a good or service.

These companies are power brokers and gatekeepers of a whole new domain. They can give or take away the power to create worlds and perform feats equalling magic.

Just letting things stay as they are will make them our feudal lords of a digital middle-age.

BREAKING: The House just passed HR 6090, which expands the definition of antisemitism to include criticism of Israel.

Let me be clear. People have rights. State governments do not have rights. This terrible bill sets a dangerous precedent & does nothing to actually decrease or stop the scourge of antisemitism. The Senate should not pass this bill and Biden should not sign it into law.

gimulnautti, (edited )
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@philip @QasimRashid It’s cutting it close. Whether the state of Israel’s stated goals of remaining a jewish state is racist should still be up for debate, because it is a debate that can be learned from. It’s useful because ethnicity was a thing on the ground through 1920 to 1990, even if technically one can convert to Judaism nowadays.

The conflict is based on deep ethnically-based divisions and violence in the past, and it isn’t a worthless argument.

    @dominiksteiger @HistoPol One would think making it obvious that attacks don’t make a difference would do that.

    But I think the actual sources for escalation of this conflict lie elsewhere.

    For example, it could also be thought that the escalation started with Israel for bombing Iran’s consulate.

    I have no love for Iran and I wish for their oppressive regime to swiftly end. But I have even more concern for not following international law.

    Vladimir Medinski, Putin’s personal assistant, repeatedly states Finland, Ukraine & Poland were in fact created by Russia and the ”mistake” should be rectified.

    Especially this should be considered by those critical of US imperialism themselves.

    gimulnautti, to mathematics

    people:

    I feel there has to be a way of training neural networks to recognise the influence of their training data on the output.

    This would probably include training a complementary indexing network + database that would then ”reverse-training” resolve and offer at some predetermined accuracy the -viable sources for each generated

    I need some help though. A proof would show the companies know it can be done, but they just don’t want to.

    gimulnautti,
    @gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

    @sofia In other words: Getting paid a reasonable amount from the model providers would incentivise people to be part of the training data.

    Getting also paid from using the models creatively incentivises their use, and this is where copyright reform is most needed.

    Instead of remaining a grey area forever, as the industry would sure be happy about, we need legal category for the remix as piece of art.

    @sofia No, actually I am looking forward to people making MORE contributions to AI training instead of hiding their work away to protect it from being stolen.

    I am not looking for copyright violations, but a new paradigm, where generative models feed back into the creative economy.

    For this rewriting of the copyright laws will be necessary. I wrote lengthily about this for the Finnish Pirate party more than a year ago:
