My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

Early 4chan -- before it's spectacular decay -- was quite conscious where it's memory resided -- in users.

You'd have to understand the peculiar software architecture to know why, but 4chan has no ability to preserve posts. When a thread maxes out it is deleted.

The /y/ and other board's user's were openly conscious that the communities memories were their responsibility, maintained by reposting older material, simply because the code didn't support anything else. But the result was real community and collective memory, explicitly maintained. Though conjured up by a teenage programmer there's much profundity in there, accidental or otherwise. (I suspect the former but having talked to him at a conference once he was at least aware of it after.)

In case you were wondering how JK Rowling's women's rights crusade is going, she's been busy attacking Glasgow Women's Library (the only accredited UK museum dedicated to women's history and a charity that offers literacy and numeracy services for women) for displaying a comic about transphobia written by a lesbian woman 🤡💩

The last place that Israel called "safe zone" now will become a kill zone.
is still watching, most countries actively supporting the slaughter they call "war".

They want to expel all Palestinians from , with full support of @EU_Commission and @Bundesregierung

I noticed something strange at : people are finishing their talk right on time.

That would be VERY UNUSUAL in an academic research conference. Here, in this engineering community, I still haven't saw a speaker having to be stopped half way.

I can actually attend the presentations I want without bad surprises.

And that's so relaxing.

Lunar New Year’s resolution # 3: walled garden social media is officially deprecated. It has served its place, but it was a bad idea. I plan to copy linked content around for backwards compatibility, for an as yet undecided amount of time, but my content will start and reside in mastodon, pixelfed, wordpress or my quarto blog, not FB/IG/LinkedIn/Twitter.

George Monbiot offers a concise summary of the current state of :

'demands oppression. The more concentrated wealth & power become, the more those who challenge the rich & powerful must be hounded and crushed. In other words, economic inequality is mirrored by inequality before the law. You can dispense with all the other indices of democracy. The best measure of the health of a political system is who gets prosecuted'!

The first issue of my @2600 subscription arrived today. Long time fan, I signed up after reading the @pluralistic callout, with yet another example of our world's pathological enshittification.

While phreaking in the 90's was often "illegal" (I did build a mercury-switch Redbox, ), the driving force was a fascination with telecommunications that has oddly lead me to where I am today.

Anyone outside or inside Germany interested in how Germany arrived at its wildly narcissistic anti-antisemitism: listen to this fantastically informative and lucid podcast interview with Emily Dische-Becker.

It's over 2 hours long but so, so worth it. Discussing anti antisemitism from the Anti-Deutsche left to the AfD and all. So much fascinating detail - Hessen's antisemitism commissioner wearing an IDF shirt etc.

The best way to concentrate wealth is to limit competition and buy your way to power. Here's a look at the evidence.
