ADHD

amberhearts,

I have found medication that works for me, and here's my interesting (and surprising) observation:

It doesn't remove ADHD, it empowers it.

This comic has been circulating for some time and it describes how I feel really well.

The author is Toivo Kaartinen, and although they don't have any personal handle online that I can refer to, they are also the author of the web comic "Foxes In Love"

osric,

@amberhearts

that's an amazing perspective!

amberhearts,

@osric Yeah, it feels backwards at first:
"ADHD is a disability, it should be treated"

But what if, and hear me out on this one; We realize that ADHD is actually a strength in the right circumstances, and people with it can actually do really good if those conditions are met?

Neurodivergent people are important in society, it's just sad that society has mostly been built to reject us :ramSad:

@deirdresm I always think it must be very sad to be neurotypical and not really deeply interested in anything, that seems like a really boring way to live

Statistically speaking, someone here on Mastodon probably needs to be reminded to move their laundry to the dryer. So be kind and share this toot around. Every bit helps.

@TeacherGriff Oh god, I need to do laundry. I wait until I have no more clean clothes before I wash them lol.

@TeacherGriff Equally, there's probably somebody who's got a cup of tea about to go too cold to be enjoyable.

@jeffowski To increase the difficulty level, add depression to the mix. And if you want to make sure, no human being can succeed, add social anxiety.

I don't put projects on the back burner. I put them under the floorboards, where the ever-louder beating of their hearts drives me slowly to madness.

@BeAware

You are echoing a classic internal monologue of mine...

"Just something to keep on your back burner..."

"I don't HAVE a #$%^& back burner. I've got ONE burner. ONE. It's either on or off."

samofhearts,

@BeAware I almost started a project once, but then I moved instead because it seemed like less stress lol.

If you are hosting a holiday gathering where or folk will attend (or anyone else who would benefit), please consider setting up a as a quiet space where they can go to escape the sensory onslaught and draining socializing. You can ask people what they might like in a chill room, but snacks, family photo albums, coffee table books, plushies, puzzles, playing cards, comic books, fidget toys, and lego bricks are all reasonable things to try. And it doesn't have to be a solo space – a quiet, out-of-the-way spot to sit and have a conversation is also nice. Protip: If there is an aquarium in the home, use that to anchor the chill space. Nothing beats a good fish tank for chilling out, though a window with a picturesque view is a close second.

If you're someone who would love to have a chill room available at someone else's holiday gathering, try asking them to set one up, or maybe offer to help set it up if that's not too much trouble. Sometimes all you have to do is ask.

Good luck with your holidays, make an effort to include the people whose needs usually get overlooked, and don't let anyone make you feel bad for not being able to keep up with the neurotypical social norms.

[We have another big holiday coming up, so bumping this post again.]

Regulatory Bodies: “ADHD medication is highly addictive”

Folks: “Wait… did I take my pills?"

RenewedRebecca,

@esdin yes, it's highly addictive... FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE ADHD.

@esdin @XaiaX Highly addictive to everyone who doesn’t need it.

If you live in the USA and have been having trouble getting your meds, please consider filling this out.

It appears the government is going to be meeting with FDA about this and want people to comment.

@PhilGastwirth Is this even the problem though:
“FTC and HHS are seeking public comment in an Request for Information (RFI) regarding market concentration among large health care GPOs and drug wholesalers, as well as information detailing their contracting practices. The RFI’s purpose is to provide the agencies with an understanding of how the practices of two pharmaceutical drug middlemen groups—group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and drug wholesalers—may be contributing to generic drug shortages.”

From what I understand, the problem is that the Biden administration gave the drug manufacturers the same exact amount of active ingredient they were given the year before, which wasn’t enough because we had a shortage that year as well. Lots of people claimed it was over prescribing by online platforms that caused it, but I don’t believe online platforms were prescribing to people they shouldn’t be in massive volumes. It’s more likely people were finally getting care because they could do telemedicine.

But I also suspect part of the problem is that they haven’t increased the allotment of active ingredient to the manufacturer, and a lot of the long Covid symptoms are things like fatigue and pain that are being treated with stimulants and pain medication.

I guess before I can comment I have to go research how these wholesalers are causing the problem. Are they not purchasing the medication from the factories?

Do you know why the wholesalers lack of competition would create a shortage at my local pharmacy?

As soon as I am doing / get to do something I am passionate about, I am only doing that and can't really be distracted... The Federal Trade Commission is STILL accepting complaints from the public related to the shortage of and ADHD medications generally.

https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/02/ftc-hhs-seek-public-comment-generic-drug-shortages-competition-amongst-powerful-middlemen

One concern is ongoing private equity purchasing of generic pill press companies that is creating artificial scarcity deliberately.
