Very much agreeing with @evan here on the strategy for #activitypub and related.

The exists as the antithesis to centralised networks. Which is why, IMHO, it is absolutely not needed to welcome . Fox, henhouse and stuff. If they want to implement some sort of gateway using — let them build it. But we are under no obligation to help them. Or discuss with them under NDA. Simple. They are not friends or allies. They will extend, embrace, extinguish what we have under the disguise of cooperation should you help them.

Latest blog post: on , the Non-Standard Standard.

This is based on a presentation I'll be giving at . It discusses 4 key ways ActivityPub is not a standard standard.

Isn't it crazy how AOC seems concerned about the possibility of one billionaire-backed clone () potentially outshining another billionaire-backed Twitter clone ()?

I really wish she understood the reasons behind Threads having an advantage over Bluesky: rather than embracing , Bluesky decided to develop their own protocol entirely.

It all comes down to a certain billionaire, Jack Dorsey, who wasn't keen on collaborating with the established . That's why Bluesky is most likely headed for failure.

A thought experiment: The fediverse as an actor model. This is a thought experiment in how I would personally look at domain modeling in the fediverse with an actor model, loosely drawing from (this is 100% me thinking out loud because I enjoy domain modeling and think it's a useful exercise, I also enjoy the actor model, so not a serious proposal).

First. Let's draw a few lines so that we have a consistent set of terms.

(I suspect @smallcircles will appreciate this thread)

It's great to see that is getting serious about offering integration so that communication can happen with and the broader .

We NEED open, interoperable protocols that for this kind of communication and interaction. It's a key way to unlock the walled gardens that control so much of messaging.

And it's great to see a company the size of Meta getting behind ActivityPub. Kudos to the teams involved.

I wonder if people threatening to block Facebook's/Meta's new ActivityPub-compatible social media network also automatically block emails coming from gmail.com.

At this rate, they eclipse Twitter in mere weeks, and then the network effect turns negative against Twitter. So I expect everybody on Twitter to move to Threads in the next couple of months.

I’m sure it will also suck out some users — after all, there is a promise of .

So the terrain has just shifted very considerably. How do we adjust and turn this to our advantage?

atomicpoet, to fediverse

Yes, there's slowdown in sign-ups. My conjecture for why it's happening:

  1. became the hotness and sucked the oxygen out of the room
  2. People are awaiting to see what has to offer
  3. There hasn't been a big Mastodon release in a long, long time -- which dulls curiosity about the product
  4. Growth of has moved more towards *key apps (, , etc.)

So, anyone have tips for installing the plugin on a multisite installation?

I have it working fine on a single WordPress instance, but I'm having a challenge on a multisite setup.

On the multisite server, in the primary site, I've installed and activated the AP plugin, but it's not working, and in Site Health I see:

> WebFinger endpoint is not accessible

> Your WebFinger endpoint https://danyork.me/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:danyork@danyork.me does not return valid JSON for application/jrd+json.

Any ideas?

So I managed to add to a static website I just put together. I will be modifying it so I use the same code on my personal blog too.

Basically it supports followers, and when a new page is added (like a news entry, or a new project) then if your following the website it will show as a status in your feed.

Even cooler, if you comment or like the status from here you will see that comment and status on the website. Yes I can block people if they abuse this, as well as servers.

Check it out by following @flear which represents https://flear.org

Its a very early beta, so the look of the site will still be heavily modified and I will add some more support soon. But this covers all the basics needs.

Mastodon should support Markdown formatting. This should actually be defined as a part of ActivityPub. Beyond bold and italics, it would be great to create links to make the content easier to read. https://www.markdownguide.org

IMHO: If (and that’s a very big if) Facebook decides to start federating with for , they will claim that in order to “protect” their 100M users, they will only federate with a limited, small set of instances. And they will say that they might “invite” more instances to federate with them, if these instances are deemed worthy. Under whatever unknown criteria that will not be transparent. Divide and conquer. Don’t fall for it.

Oh, Zot! Nomadic Identity is Coming to ActivityPub: This could change the Fediverse forever

Years before there was Mastodon and even ActivityPub, there was Mike Macgirvin who created the Zot protocol, which Hubzilla runs on. One of Hubzilla’s most amazing features (apart from also integrating with Activity and the Fediverse, and having cha ...continues

Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?

I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.

My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷‍♂️

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬

The fediverse is amazing!

I can’t get over how cool it is to view my posts from any server. I’m definitely going to use activitypub for my social media I’m planning on making. I was going to use @Discourse , but considering it’s like where you are only able to self host and each instance of discourse can’t interconnect makes me kinda sad. But activitypub seems like the only way I feel happy in both ways.
