Fascinating ... Apple joins Signal to provide the most secure end-to-end encrypted messaging protocols. Note: Apple engineers created their own “Levels” and magically theirs is the highest. ;) But regardless, this is obviously strong encryption.

"Support for PQ3 will start to roll out with the public releases of iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, macOS 14.4, and watchOS 10.4, and is already in the corresponding developer preview and beta releases.”

A giant leap forwards for encryption with MLS, https://matrix.org/blog/2023/07/a-giant-leap-with-mls/.

The Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol is a new encryption standard defined by the IETF (RFC9420), to provide a way for users of a messaging service to communicate securely without servers being able to eavesdrop on their conversations.

Matrix has been working on this with Cisco, Google, Mozilla, AWS, Wire and so on.

Matrix is working on making MLS decentralized too.

The Signal messaging app has been facing battles in India, Russia, Iran and other countries for its unyielding stance on privacy. The platform's president @Mer__edith talks about how the company deals with restrictive legislation from countries like India, she talks about concerns over competitor Telegram and her threat to pull Signal out of the UK.

Telegram has 700 million users and has always marketed itself as a "secure" and "private" messaging app, even though experts have repeatedly warned that Telegram is not as secure as end-to-end encrypted app Signal, for example.

To avoid leaking your IP address, you have to go to Telegram’s Settings > Privacy and Security > Calls, and then select "Never" in the Peer-to-Peer menu.

: "How do you respond to the government pressure to comply when you’re threatened with an outright ban?

I mean, it’s simple: We can’t provide the information. So you can put a gun to my head — you’ll have to shoot. We don’t have it because it’s end-to-end encrypted. There’s no balancing that’s in our hands because of the guarantees we make. In part, [governments] are threatened because we can’t provide that information. There’s no way to sort of sit on us hard enough so that we start to undermine what we’re doing. Our code is open, it’s verified; our protocol implementation is open, and it’s been tried and tested. Everyone’s thrown everything against it, trying to find a vulnerability. They haven’t [found it]. This is a robust system. You’re not just trusting me to not play nice with governments. We literally don’t have the data, which is the only way to actually preserve privacy."

: "When it comes to traceability and finding the originator of a viral message on an end-to-end encrypted messaging platform, Signal’s Meredith Whittaker is clear — it is not possible. And for Signal, since it does not have “viral forwarding functions”, the context is different from WhatsApp.

And even if the new Telecommunications Bill goes ahead with a mandatory KYC requirement for users on OTT platforms such as Signal and WhatsApp, Signal will not conduct a KYC of its users. “It is not possible for us to do that. And part of our commitment to privacy is that we treat ourselves like a third party and as Signal, try to have as little data as possible [of our users] because we recognise that is the only way to [have a privacy preserving platform],” she said.

Comparing KYC to age verification and other kind of authentication technologies, Whittaker said that such technologies build “surveillance regimes” that make it “very easy to track what everyone does online and offline” and “eliminate anonymity and privacy from it”."

: "By making a minor concession EU governments hope to find a majority next week to approve the controversial „chat control“ bill. According to the proposed child sexual abuse regulation (CSAR), providers of messengers, e-mail and chat services would be forced to automatically search all private messages and photos for suspicious content and report it to the EU. To find a majority for this unprecedented mass surveillance, the EU Council Presidency proposed Tuesday that the scanners would initially search for previously classified CSAM only, and even less reliable technology to classify unknown imagery or conversations would be reserved to a later stage. The proposed „deal“ will be discussed by ambassadors tomorrow and could be adopted by ministers next week.

Patrick Breyer, Pirate Party Member of the European Parliament and co-negotiator of the proposal, warns about the consequences of such a „deal“:" https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/chat-control-2-0-eu-governments-set-to-approve-the-end-of-private-messaging-and-secure-encryption/

: "So you joined a social network without ranking algorithms—is everything good now? Jonathan Stray, a senior scientist at the UC Berkeley Center for Human-Compatible AI, has doubts. “There is now a bunch of research showing that chronological is not necessarily better,” he says, adding that simpler feeds can promote recency bias and enable spam.

Stray doesn’t think social harm is an inevitable outcome of complex algorithmic curation. But he agrees with Rogers that the tech industry’s practice of trying to maximize engagement doesn’t necessarily select for socially desirable results.
Stray suspects the solution to the problem of social media algorithms may in fact be … more algorithms. “The fundamental problem is you've got way too much information for anybody to consume, so you have to reduce it somehow,” he says."
