The #Biden admin has a plan to shut down the #border. But it needs #Mexico's help.
The admin hopes to unveil a series of executive actions that President Biden can sign but will likely have to wait for the outcome of Mexico's June 2 presidential #election.
🔓 We are telling #G7 leader that the #AI infrastructure must be #open.

Tomasz Poprawka: « la recherche est aujourd’hui l’un des piliers politiques essentiels de l’Union européenne ».
Usually science administrators prefer to hide behind a Popperian curtain of political neutrality - even where actual scientists <@ScientistRebellion > get arrested - but the actual disconnect between the scientific consensus and the miasma exhaled by certain political agendas is now so obvious that even the conservative academies of science are accepting that they are, indeed, political actors with moral responsibilities.
«Les élections de juin ne seront pas normales, elles seront cruciales dans un contexte de très fortes incertitudes.» ( Patrizio Bianchi)
The @EU_Commission has launched a public #policy consultation on the rules defining the European #standards system (aka regulation 1025). The top-line for me is it completely ignores #OpenSource while making both engagement in standardisation and use of standards very hard for open source community members.
Unsurprisingly, the consultation's survey makes it extremely hard to tell them this! I think @osi will be attaching a letter to its input! The deadline is July 25.
Migrant crossings on the #US - #Mexico#border have dropped significantly in the first 3 months of the year, acc/to official figures, from a peak of 301,981 in Dec to under 200,000 a month from Jan - Mar. That could ease political pressure on #POTUS#Biden, but #Republicans are likely to continue attacking him by pointing out that border crossings remain relatively high.
In Vox, I explained how federal policy encourages car bloat, making American vehicles more enormous, polluting, and dangerous than they'd otherwise be.
That's the exact opposite of what we should be doing.
Encyclopaedia Metallum¹ just put out an interesting statement² on AI. Despite being in text, I have to make it an image because of character counts. One of the ironies of living in my SF future apparently.
💬 "In March 2020 the information system for dealing with Covid was; I would wheel in a whiteboard and grab a marker and Simon Stephens would read out from scraps of paper, faxes that he'd got from the NHS…" - Dominic Cummings interviewed on Helen Lewis has Left the Chat, on BBC Sounds.
Just read #CHI2024 preprint "The Future of HCI-Policy Collaboration" led by @fabulousqian. Authors argue for greater and more intentional involvement of #HCI researchers with #policy. I appreciated this definition: "In practice, policy design is the iterative process of (1) identifying policy needs, (2) clarifying policy needs (or issue- framing), (3) formulating policy, (4) designing systems and services that implement policy, and (5) evaluating policy outcomes"
NEW PODCAST: This week we're taking a look at the EU's once-trumpeted nature restoration law. Can the EU still claim to be a world leader when it comes to going green?
Trump said at a "messaging event" in #GrandRapids, #Michigan, "It's a very bad thing happening. It's going to end on the day that I take office, which will be Jan 20."
The most common used #debit card by financially illiterate people, the #postepay card by #posteitaliane#bank is now forcing you to allow it to access the android.permission.PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS permissions from the android settings, otherwise you can only use it 3 times and then it will stop working.
I will update this when (and if exists) I receive the #privacy#policy link, since this is a disaster
Body of research grows that indicates the e-bike is a silver bullet for the transport ecosystem in reducing traffic & helping people become more active. Of course, mobile people stay & shop on high streets too, so not bad for the economy either: https://www.cyclingelectric.com/news/study-e-bike-riders-drive-less-trips
