Something notable about the “X/Twitter added a 5 second delay on links to websites Musk doesn’t like” story is that it’s well understood in the tech industry that every second matters for retention.

You lose about half of your would-be traffic if your link doesn’t “load” within 3 seconds.

They’re leveraging a dark pattern to reduce traffic at scale.

That is the kind of thing that should be illegal to do as a massive platform. Twisting the web.

That's the exact opposite of what we should be doing.

Analysis: DeSantis is defending new slavery teachings. Civil rights leaders see a pattern of 'policy violence' (apnews.com)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Civil rights activists cheered when Ron DeSantis pardoned four Black men wrongfully convicted of rape as one of his first actions as Florida’s governor. But four years later, as DeSantis eyes the presidency, their hope that the Republican would be an ally on racial justice has long faded.

In this weeks Week in Insights, I look at Finland's progressive traffic ticketing system as an example of what is possible for .

"Finland runs a ‘day fine’ system that divides a driver’s daily income by two and applies a progressive rate to the fine, leading to whopper speeding tickets such as a former corporate director’s $103,000 payout for a 25 km/h violation. No drivers can simply ‘price in’ the cost of being ticketed.”

TL;DR: the entire school masks (N95+), rooms are ventilated with CO2 monitors ensuring <800ppm, daily screening and surveillance testing, vaccines mandated. The 22-page plan is available at the link above.

The @EU_Commission has launched a public #policy consultation on the rules defining the European #standards system (aka regulation 1025). The top-line for me is it completely ignores #OpenSource while making both engagement in standardisation and use of standards very hard for open source community members.

Unsurprisingly, the consultation's survey makes it extremely hard to tell them this! I think @osi will be attaching a letter to its input! The deadline is July 25.

Do students learn better if instructors share slides?

An experiment gave students no access, partial access, or full access to instructor’s slides. Access didn’t significantly help.

When controlling for other factors, “bringing slides to class negatively impacted …exam performance” in two of three units (R < -.2). It never helped.

And “using slides to study” never helped (above and beyond other factors).

Got my Saturday list done!

Bicycled to the library
Bicycled to a garage sale
Bicycled to the store (solely to buy snacks for the pet rabbits 🤔)

Saw some fitness cyclers
A few kids on bikes
No adults doing any utilitarian cycling
Eight bazillion cars (Nobody walks/bikes in LA!)
Annoyed the clerks in a store asking them where the nearest bicycle rack was (answer: nowhere nearby)

#BikeTooter

ai6yr,

Observations: Although it's great the city here has added bicycle lanes, I personally think putting bicycle lanes on ALTERNATE ROUTES (not primary routes) would be a better way to entice people to ride. I find I am taking parallel (non-car intensive) routes INSTEAD OF BICYCLE LANES (on very high speed, car intensive routes) almost everywhere now.
