I really need to write something about why having mega instances on the fediverse is a problem that’s longer than a toot.
Probably a good time for a post on the subject given I now have about the same number of people following me here as I did when I closed my Twitter account.
#SCaLE, the largest community-run #opensource and free software conference in North America, will take place for the 21st time on March 14-17, 2024 in Pasadena, CA, USA. Dima Kogan and other #Debian enthusiasts will be representing Debian with a booth again. Use the "DEB50" promo code to get a discount. Come by and say hi! :debian:
Having been a FreeBSD (and BSD in general) user since the 2.x days and managed a small fleet of servers since the heady 4.x days (including a few Sun UltraSPARC II and IIi servers and dealing with the ATA problems), I've been rooting for FreeNAS and TrueNAS CORE for a long time.
It's kind of disheartening to have seen support for FreeBSD from hardware, software and cloud vendors fade away. I knew that when TrueNAS SCALE was going to be based on Linux that it'll eventually lead to CORE getting sunsetted.
I do have to say that I am a bit of a hypocrit in that I migrated from CORE to SCALE on my TrueNAS Mini X+ and only have one server running FreeBSD (even though the cloud provider no longer provides support).
If you're on the fence about whether or not to go to @socallinuxexpo this year, you definitely should go! It's by far one of the best #Linux events. I've gone every year since 2010. It's very well run and is a perfect blend of open source hobbyists/users and distinguished professionals. If you're into #Kubernetes, don't skip the #DevOps Days events either!
Just booked my hotel room for @socallinuxexpo! We're a little under 2 months away, but I'm already looking forward to being back at #SCaLE again this year!
I'm getting excited for our upcoming #Fedora talk at #SCaLE this year. The immutable #Linux desktop space has really taken shape this past year and Fedora has played a big part of that story. Working on an "all levels" talk for it has all the more helped me to remember how far things have come and the amazing potential for every day laptop and desktop users, from total newbies to dayjob developers.
I'm writing a new big book on software performance and scalability
If you'd like to see early chapter drafts from it, and potentially give me a little feedback (or answer a few simple questions I ask of you, about your impressions), in private? please let me know
Have an itch to speak at a conference? Just looking for a reason to go to California? If so, you're in luck!
Happy to announce that #Ubuntu#community conference #UbuCon USA will be making a grand return to #SCaLE in Pasadena, California during March this year. We're looking for all sorts of talks, so if you've done something interesting with Ubuntu, feel free to submit an abstract. I want to see some #HPC talks 😃
I’m looking to make a career change from retail sales. Investigating my options. Seeing that there’s usually a minimum requirement of some jobs training.
I’d like to avoid going back to school for a four year degree, if it can be avoided. Do you see people being hired with their only training being these boot camps or technical degrees I’m seeing some places? Should I just consider a 4 year degree as cost of entry here?
@spaceraser#SCaLE in March will have a career track and usually covers recareering, we'll also have career counseling. Need to be in person in Pasadena, Calif
I removed the degree requirement for my job reqs, but nothing open right now
I'd like someone with a degree, but the real value is if the candidate can grow into the sysadmin I need
#SeaGL is planning a career expo in November. We plan to be hybrid. It's similar to SCaLE's career track, but smaller
