EU plan to force messaging apps to scan for CSAM risks millions of false positives, experts warn.

A controversial push by European Union lawmakers to legally require messaging platforms to scan citizens’ private communications for child sexual abuse material could lead to millions of false positives per day, hundreds of security and privacy experts warned in an open letter Thursday.

I love it when people yell at me for not including alt-text with my images because they assume I must be the sort of person who neglects to include alt-text. It's so obvious that I'm that sort of person that there's no need to even check and see if it's true, apparently.

Dear
I'm begging you, please just talk to a behavioral scientist/psychologist before publishing. Or read a textbook. Read Wikipedia. Anything.

"Psychotic" doesn't mean what you think it does. No, that's not why therapy works. Your armchair theories about mental illnesses and substance use need to be updated or scrapped altogether. Freud's theories were never any good and haven't been relevant for decades.

While I'm here: you also might not know what "bemused" means, and even if you do, please limit its use to perhaps twice in one book.

The phrases above are how ridiculous it would look if certain wrote about physical science without consulting an actual scientist or even reading a couple of Wikipedia articles, like they do about behavioral science.

The Biden administration has chosen to open up a new front in Yemen instead of pressuring Israel to stop its onslaught against Gaza. Air strikes are unlikely to deter attacks on Red Sea shipping, but they could undercut a deal to end Yemen’s bloody civil war.

The 's constant "On the one hand... on the other..." approach to pretty much every is definitely not helping the general public's apparent endorsement of the "For every , there is a simple, easy-to-understand ".

If we want an educated - or at least informed - public, we have to stop over-simplifying the issues and facts, turning them to blenderized pablum, and get people to appreciate that real life isn't simple, black-and-white.

An update to my rant...

I purchased a from Rheem. It arrived; I installed it, reconnected everything, turned the power back on, and ... the control board still showed 68: "incorrect from ".

They sent me the bloody motor, and I stupidly didn't triple-check the part number before installing it.

The motor itself is identical, just the programming is different.

cazabon,

The actual 3-phase motor is - that's one of the reasons they're used in industry, simple means less to go . And it appears to be well-made, so there are and and everything in it. But the motor itself isn't expensive. Rheem probably doesn't pay more than USD 100 for that part of it, and maybe less.

But the bolted-on , which make it so you can't easily replace the motor with another unit, are .
