Almost everyone who says "Mastodon didn't work for me" on Bluesky seems to have posted only "me me me" stuff for months (if that) on Mastodon, followed about 10-20 people, never replied to anyone and then gave up because "nobody there, it didn't fly".

It seems there is a big misunderstanding how this free and healthy social media works. We are not here for the easy wins, likes, shares and dopamine spikes. We are here because we accept the fact we are not part of the commercial hype machine. We choose natural engagement over spoiling algorithms, we choose conversation and meaning in our social media. At least that is how I see it.

Do you consider yourself a nerd? (Definition: a person who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject, especially one of specialist or niche interest)

In this context I’m talking about the word in its positive meaning, it can be tech, board games, movies, etc. It’s usually if you are a problem solver, a thinker, a techie.

They say Mastodon is a niche platform for nerds so I just want to see the numbers. Don’t let this influence your decision. If you think you’re even a slightest bit nerdy, it’s a yes. Otherwise no. Boosts appreciated.

For all the people who say ”I had to select a server, it was so complicated to sign up to Mastodon. On Bluesky it was easy” - how are these two different logic-wise? I mean what the hell?

This clearly seems to follow up the VyrCossont's idea of the extended search feature that finds public posts.

Gargron: "It is my decision to unite all discovery features in one setting, because all of this stuff is an expected part of a social network and splitting it up into different settings that everyone has to opt-into one by one just to get the same behaviour they get by default on other social media seems like a bad user experience. Also, discoverable is already a federated attribute."

No, it did not. Tired of hearing this. According to who? In what?

I’ve seen platforms that ceased to exist over the years. I’ve seen social media companies getting acquired or going bankrupt. I’ve seen entire portals losing their users. The Fediverse keeps growing. How is this failing?

Social media is social. On X it is pretty hard to be social when you have to pay for it (literally and figuratively).

On Mastodon everything you do is social. Likes have no meaning other than for good spirits, so people have a conversation mindset. Boosts have a large meaning, they are the only algorithm, so people are boosting with low bar.

On Bsky/Threads everything is mostly built on likes. People rarely re-share anything too ordinary, posts have to be EXCEPTIONAL to get shares or comments.

This is why I believe in open protocols over commercial war machines.

During my one year activity on the I've now seen at least four instance admins quitting from being an admin or shutting down their server. Half of these cases were admins being dickheads and the rest of them were mostly about users being dickheads leading admin getting burned out.

Both outcomes are unfortunate, but the latter makes me sad. Why do we have to harass and doxx an admin here for such pseudetical reasons like extensive open text search feature? I don't get humans sometimes.

I repeat: We are not free from toxicity on the Fediverse. Be kind. Make a chance.

It truly amazes me some people have left the Fediverse because someone told them to add alt texts to their images. I simply cannot wrap my head around the fact that you are annoyed about the disabled people’s right to know what’s there and you are frustrated about the concept of helping and making the Internet a better place for everyone? 🤯

Just noticed Bluesky doesn't ACTUALLY add the alt text in the img itself. This is a big mistake and makes the service very inaccessible.

The text is actually in the very last part of the DOM (Document Object Model) tree... and is triggered via click. So, if the screen reader doesn't support JavaScript same way than for the seeing people, descriptive text is nowhere to be found. Even when it is, it can't be accessed easily.

Twitter folks, there is a way to make Mastodon feel like home more UI wise: , an interface that resembles the Twitter UI.

Many instances support Mastodon Bird UI (like mstdn.social under the theme "Elephant" in your settings) and you can also use it via browser extension.

It feels like people are 50%/50% on the search feature on Mastodon and Fediverse in general. Some Fedi software have quite extensive search implemented already in my knowledge. Mastodon barely has any search if you don't count the open text search patch.

What do you think?

Can't stay quiet about this as much as I don't like namedropping or any kind of blaming even when there is a reason. But there is this one Mastodon admin who refuses to take any responsibility of his server. He literally said on other social site: "I'm not doing anything about it, just writing this comment is too much trouble for that shit."

I confonted him and said: "So you want to give free server capacity to criminals and spammers. Because quite a few vulnerabilities have come out since 4.1.4. So you want to let the spambots continue their work in peace? Good luck with that 🫡"

He answered "Yes" and blocked me. This is disturbing to say the least. Don't know how to react.

You should probably defederate mastodo.fi.

I’m so tired of the capitalist argument that an open source project cannot be successful because it’s based on nonprofit or donations instead of vc funding and corporates.

Some people seem to actually believe in this narrative that Linux, Mozilla products and the Internet itself are all alive solely because of for-profit industries while forgetting that the actual people, inventors, universities and organisations do exist in this world. Also the contributing factors by companies do not nullify the brilliance of the original project. FFS, it is not all because of the money.
