    @rose I've honestly considered doing this since a) I love the Surface hardware, having owned a 1, 3, 7; and b) love Fedora, which works well with touchscreens.

    Alas, I cannot justify spending more money on gadgets after getting my Framework Laptop 16 :(

    Sweet sunshine, stripped down and oriented is nice. I've got the following settings enabled and I feel like I can see! There are some features I'd like to see added, like permanent color filters, but this is still great.

    Doesn't help my desire for an monitor for tho...

    I just realized February marks my two year mark on using as my desktop operating system exclusively. It's certainly been interesting and challenging on some fronts, but it's been a great experience overall. No more random updates that change all of my software, no more reboots out of the blue. Sometimes things just work better than on

    10/10 would recommend

    One of the most bonkers things that I can do on that I couldn't do on is just casually ALT+TAB (or in my case on switch to a different workspace) and leave a game running, without issue. To the point where I forget that I have a game running.

    Just. Bonkers.

    Thanks Linux

    question: how do y'all find and determine what libraries and functions to use? As I'm going through I keep coming across challenges that require me to use functions/methods that I didn't even know existed for a particular class or primitive, yet someone else figured it out. So what am I missing that everyone else knows?

    After thinking about it, if Mr. Sweeney is interested in fighting Valve's "monopoly" they should be doing everything in their power to port the Launcher to and getting it on the . They could, single-handidly, undermine 's control of the platform and use it against them.

    In a context, it's like comparing to One is fine, and the other is hands down better.

    @bananabob @InCameraNet I'm going to second this, but I would recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE.) There's a technical reason for it, but for a beginner, it won't be visible for you, but it will make life a touch easier.

    @darth I gave it a try, but the desktop mode is still a bit too limited. I prefer the GNOME desktop enviornment and would like to see a GRUB-like option to boot directly into the desktop instead of going through the gaming mode.

    That being said, it wasn't a terrible experience and I could see it being a good option for someone who wanted to downsize.

    the9thdude,
    @the9thdude@mstdn.social avatar

    @darth Valve has mentioned that they want to make SteamOS available to the public as a standalone ISO, but there's stuff that they're still working on to get to that point.

    I know one can technically run Linux on anything, but if you want the best experience, how would you go about choosing your parts?

    galad, to Israel
    @galad@mastodon.social avatar

    I am sick to death of Left Wing anti semitism. Israel exists, it’s not going anywhere, Israelis have a right to defend themselves, and nothing justifies murdering civilians. These barbarous attacks aren’t about Palestinian rights or Palestinian statehood. These attacks are about killing as many Jews as possible and taking hostages to exchange for imprisoned members of Hamas. Hamas are a proxy for Iran that uses Palestinians as patsies.

    the9thdude,
    @the9thdude@mstdn.social avatar

    @galad @tofugolem The apartheid state that Israel controls is the direct cause of this conflict. The Palestinians have no right to self-governance because Israel deems they have no right to self-govern. To Israel, the Palestinians are a nuisance that must be contained or expelled and no allowance for them to live in their homeland.

    So looking at the environment. I have two choices.
    Make an engine tailored to what I do (which I have done before).
    OR
    Commit 100% to Godot, specially for 3D work.
    Both let me remain detached from any uncomfortable obligations, but man is this a tough one.

    The potential knowledge gain from learning to make a 3D engine as well is enticing.

    the9thdude,
    @the9thdude@mstdn.social avatar

    @illusionofmana Or, a combination of both? Godot IS open source, so if there's anything that you feel is particularly lacking, you could always add in whatever feature you need, rather than having to build everything from scratch.

    https://github.com/godotengine/godot

    the9thdude,
    @the9thdude@mstdn.social avatar

    @illusionofmana On the graphics side of things with Godot, they already have Vulkan and FSR2 implemented [for Godot 4], but they haven't added in ray tracing at the moment. If that's something that interests you, you could always gnaw on that problem.

    As for other, more "polish" features, I know a big one people want is a revamped visual scripting system similar to Unreal's Blueprints.

    It shouldn't be this hard to find a local music player for with the following requirements:

    1. Simple interface akin to the iPod Touch iTunes interface
    2. Compatible with Android Auto
    3. Lets me subscribe to podcasts via RSS

    If anyone knows of any, please, PLEASE, let me know. I don't even mind paying if it's solid. I would use but it's interface is too busy for me.
