cross-country ride when? (Original)

TheFake_VIP,

As a general rule of thumb, I won't follow anyone who:

• Hasn't posted anything yet.

• Doesn't have a bio

It's not that I don't like or don't trust you if you're one of those people, but because ActivityPub has no big scarey algorithm backing it, you must put actual effort into curating your feed. I imagine this is true for quite a few others on the .

I know a number of people who looked at joining and were discouraged by just having to choose an (many still don't understand what an instance is). The ones who did join had trouble navigating -- and gave up leaving unused accounts. I'm talking people in my circle: SF authors, some science & environment writers, (writing is their strength not tech), some academics, etc.
What about a sign-up process that proposes specific instances catered to their preferences? Have a short questionnaire where the info (which shows their areas of interest) is used to generate a proposed list of no more than 4 or 5 instances that are a match to what they'd like (do they want a specialty instance -- what area? A general interest one? One with a focus on human rights/environment/the arts/fiction/journalism? etc. While many instances have similar themes, there could be a random element in the selection of the 4 or 5 instances proposed to newbies.
Then once they get used to being on Mastodon, they can choose to move another instance if they want.
It could also help distribute users around the .
Also, if you're new to Mastodon, it's a bit of a learning curve navigating between instances. And while there are new apps and abilities to make some of these things easier -- they're hard to find and newbies (especially non tech types) don't know to look or ask, or know how to use them.
There are a lot of interesting people who just don't have the time to learn a bunch of new steps -- so as much automation as possible between the instances could really help.

Here's my video tutorial about how to start using : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZraTMak34yw

Thanks to @CurtisLBray and pnw.zone for hosting the demo account. I included shoutouts to @Tusky and @IceCubesApp as my favorite mobile clients, you rock! And thanks again to Kevin for editing the video and sharing on his channel.

What do y'all think? I'd appreciate any feedback you have about the video, it's only my second software tutorial.

jlowenwrites, Dutch

Is there a good app with easy switch of accounts? Preferably w/ support for different themes between the two?

Same question for actually.

hirad,

@jlowenwrites Android or iOS? Pretty much all android clients allow you to easily switch between accounts.

jlowenwrites,

@hirad iOS (unfortunately?). Right now I use the regular Mastodon app but I don’t see an easy / obvious switch. Same w/Discord standard app

Natasha_Jay,

Fediverse musings: folk saying you don't really need a migration of your posts between servers are implicitly minimising the value of something from months ago. Having just 'boosted an old toot' 😎 of mine from 5 months ago, it feels like a Mastodon :mastodon: apologists' view for an obvious shortcoming. And let's be clear ...

  • Me, 6 months ago?: a "born again pachyderm" 🐘

  • Me, today?: a "Fediverse explorer" :fediverse:

It''s the biggest reason I'm an early adopter checking out Calckey now -- the team there *get" this 💜 and ... I'm testing out how their new history migration works ie. Mastodon :ms_arrow_right: Calckey and Calckey :ms_arrow_left_right: Calckey migrations. It's coming

Sinjo,

@Natasha_Jay It'd be better if everyone just admitted it was a missing feature. There's lots of things I've posted ages ago that I still refer to or find funny.

Some people on terribly much. You know, those guys who want to show you everything they find interesting themselves. I am one of them.😁
If that gets on your nerves, you don't have to block or mute turbo . There is a much smarter solution to receive only their original posts!
Go to the profile you follow, click the 3 dots and click "hide boosts of @ xy . It's so easy! (Screenshot browser)

@NatureMC

@NatureMC Interesting, let me boost this 😅

AlderForrest,

For all and friends! My move from mastodon side to calckey side is completed. Lets keep tooting and noting. ✌️ Viva la federation.

DuncanWatson,

@AlderForrest I am exploring myself as well. I want to understand the options in the fediverse better and am testing various platforms.

AlderForrest,

@DuncanWatson calckey (misskey fork) looks and are promising. Best choice for me now. There is nothing wrong in Mastodon. Calckey is Mastodon with steroids for me. 🤓 And this is one beauty of fediverse.

chrisshaw,

I'm kinda thinking about webrings and whether they might have a role in a community of artists.

They very much fell out of fashion after the rise of search engines, but it feels like an indieweb/fediverse kind of capability

Does anyone have some examples of sites that do webrings well and/or any webring management software that could be used?

tetrislife,

@chrisshaw comes quite close, I suspect. https://epicyon.net

chrisshaw,

@tetrislife that looks very interesting! I'll delve more into that

adamjcook,

So... I have been experimenting with over the past few days and I think that I am going to just stick with Mastodon for now.

https://calckey.social is absolutely superb and if you are very hungry for a closer Twitter-like experience (like Quote Posts), I would give it a shot.

For me, though, I intend to develop my own, independent -compliant platform (with unique engineering education features) soon so changing over is sort of a moot point for me right now.

What's something cool you've found or are doing with that isn't specifically related? I'm interested in the scope of use cases for it.

@vwbusguy I might inspire with 3 fedi-related curated lists that can be found at https://delightful.club

How much have you given to your instance this month?

Be kind and if you can, pay for the service. You don't have to give a lot. A small monthly payment is better than nothing and helps administrators plan their finances.

That's how we keep this going.

Based on the amount of spam signups on https://pixelfed.social, I wouldn't be surprised if spam accounts correlate to other platforms recent user influx as well.

I'm not saying all growth is spam, but they are significant enough on my :pixelfed: instance to be noticable.

Luckily, 90% of spam accounts on Pixelfed are caught and hidden before any user sees them thanks to our Autospam system.

nekothegamer,

@dansup you should change the name of the autospam system because it makes it think as an automatic spam system than an anti spam system...

alwynispat,

@dansup I see that the only option is to hide these accounts. Can we suspend them entirely? Disable login?

It's my 6️⃣ month anniversary🎉

I joined when EM purchased the 🐦 site. The transition was overwhelming (instances, introductions, 🎺 , , etiquette). I have found new folks, learned a lot, got different insights, and am exposed to less negativity. Some of my old old network migrated. Big parts did not and for those I still need 🐦 (in combination with LinkedIn) to share job announcements, research updates etc.

But bottom line: I am happy I joined :mastodon: 🐘

jules,

So is intense! Phew. Coming back here to catch my breath. It's like emoji heaven over there though, y'all, for real.

I’m already exhausted of all the social apps that are out there 😵‍💫

I do find myself drawn into anything based because it appears the most true and long lasting based on existing president.

puemos,

@erinmikail Same. Too many places which makes it harder to create a meaningful environment.
Any advice? 🫠

erinmikail,
@erinmikail@mastodon.social avatar

@puemos personally, i've been focusing on the individual not the platform.

and just admitting the platforms are all wonky makes me feel normal.

But alas 🤷‍♀️
