Having spent a lot of time on Mastodon... There are tons of people there talking about federated and self-hosted services, software freedom, censorship, encryption, tech regulation... A very narrow range of topics directly surrounding the fediverse get a lot of attention....
"If you want to absolutely destroy a website that is all about building communities and meeting new people, then aim for the site and all communities to always be growing as much as possible. Make that a design goal of the site. Pump those subscriber numbers up."
I get the feeling too many people are sleeping on CentOS Stream because of how the CentOS #Linux EOL thing went down.
I mean sure, the messaging wasn't great but it happened and it is what it is. Don't let that detract from the greatness of the #CentOS Stream project in its own right and as a collaboration point for all the #RHEL based distros.
The gravity seems lost on most that for the first time ever the RHEL development process happens in the open. That's amazing. I love it. #community

TIL about another community on Slack who is now being asked to pay thousands to preserve basic functionality 😬
Proprietary tools that offer a lot for free, without fail, will squeeze you. And unfortunately, because of their nature, a lot gets left behind when you inevitably migrate.
When we select tools for our communities, we need to think over longer time horizons.
FOSS options like Matrix for chat and Discourse for forums are the better bet.
Look, if a community uses rainbow colors for their logo in support of Pride Month and LGBTIQA* folks, and you object to it because this is not welcoming of all "religions" and beliefs and cultures, and how this makes you want to disengage - how do I politely put it?
You're the other target audience for this signaling. And it's working.

I haven't talked much about my day job, but now feels like the right time since I recently moved away from management back into a content + community-driven role at @thunderbird.
As successful as the Thunderbird project is, there's a lot of room for us to improve our community engagement, whether that's creating a more welcoming environment for new contributors OR just being a fun "third place" for our users.

Like you, I'm a passionate user of K.Bin but lately, I'm noticing that things are getting kinda stale around here. The most recent thread in this, the top-level magazine on K.Bin, is 4 days old. Many other top 25 magazines are also suffering from a similar lack of fresh content. I run /m/scifi and it's been continuing to grow...

People don't realize the damage to vulnerable people the birdsite collapse has, a platform they use for mutual aid, community support, and crowdfunding is gone.
Whether you like it or not people are harmed by the end of it.
So if it makes you feel better to see it die, consider those whose survival depends on those connections.

For other people who are into tech (like myself and a lot of people here), the federation technology itself being promoted as a core component of the appeal makes...
I chair the campus committee that selects the annual “Community Read.” This book is assigned to all incoming first-year students, but faculty, staff, alumni, and the entire learning community are encouraged to engage. It’s one of the cooler parts of my job.
