Google accounts now support passkeys to replace your password and 2FA: Expect teething problems though

Starting today, Google users can switch to passkeys and ditch their passwords and two-step verification codes entirely when signing in.

Passkeys are a safer, more convenient alternative to passwords being pushed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, and other tech ...continues

When I see stories like this as a tech reviewer, I kinda feel we've failed consumers.

https://9to5mac.com/2023/05/03/iphone-new-record-average-selling-price/

There are very good reasons to buy PREMIUM priced phones, but more often than not, sampling my circles of families and friends, it's uncommon to see people really using the features that justify the premium price tags.

Whether marketing, status, or pressure to upgrade from a carrier store (with an attractive monthly lease price), I see a lot of people with $1000+ phones, who probably only use about $300 worth of that phone.

I've said for decades that I have always told my clients, "There are solutions for problems, but there are no technology for management ."

Sometimes, it appears as if there are technology solutions to management problems, but that is only because it occasionally requires technological tools for the of management policy.

The will to create and use the tool must first exist. and are paramount.

The current Apple Watch trial ends in a mistrial. Now the FTC will likely spend several months deciding whether there should be a ban on the Apple Watch because Apple stole IP from another company.

Apparently, when you're a $2 TRILLION dollar brand, you can just steal tech, distribute it at a ridiculous scale, and then stall the legal process (while lobbying in DC) when it's time to pay for stealing that tech.

The 2023 Moto G features good looks, sweet $250 price tag

Motorola's mid-range sweet spot is still worth paying attention to.

My phone is the Moto G Power 2020. I got it on sale after the 2021 was released because all the reviews noted how the 2021 version was a significant downgrade from the 2020 version. Wild! I don't know how the 2022+ versions compare, but I want to wring out as much life from this thing as possible.

Think the WGA strike isn't relevant to you? It's relevant to anyone doing creative or knowledge work because if it happens to writers, it could happen elsewhere. They asked this consortium under AMPTP including Amazon and Netflix that AI be prevented from training on covered material, and rewriting their work. The request was not only denied but they were offered a token yearly meeting to "discuss advances in technology".
Even some technologists I know don't fully understand how much training is required for AI, and that its generative capacity sits on literally millions of thoughts and ideas generated and ingested into systems. Protecting their IP from being ingested by a variety of neural networks owned by Netflix, Amazon, Paramount, NBC Universal etc., for generative AI use, is a baseline expectation for people who, like actors, may only make a single sale of their labor in a calendar year. https://deadline.com/2023/05/writers-guild-strike-begins-1235340176/

Is killing independent email?

"Is it okay that Gmail has the power to decide whether a business is sending spam or not?"

Gmail has rigged the email game imo. It makes running a self-hosted email server hard, even after properly configuring DKIM, DMARC, and SPF.

Amongst all the things we cleaned, we discussed what it would take to get people to move over to platforms like ActivityPub and to leave capitalism behind in general.

Shot from the telephoto on the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, about an instant before the three ran off for the playground. I hope my daughter remembers what they were talking about when she gets older. 🥰
