"We, the undersigned... call upon the Government of Canada to enact policy and dedicate budgetary resources to enable the Parliament of Canada to provide an open, trusted, federated, social media presence for use by all members, senators, officers and other employees of Parliament as appropriate for communication to all Canadians.”
Yesterday Justin Trudeau revealed that agents of the Indian government murdered a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. When Canadian Sikhs went to post about it on Facebook, the platform removed their posts as a violation of Indian law.
This is not a drill. The Conservative party membership has voted to treat being transgender in Canada as a mental illness and to preventing anyone under the age of 18 access to gender affirming care. This is an attack on human rights and must not be tolerated. #cdnpoli#cpc23
This is literal doom, but I actually find it mildly encouraging that our security and government services are being told the truth about the current state of the nation, society, and world. This is the kind of report that every single politician needs to not only read but reallyunderstand.
Quotes below:
"The situation will probably deteriorate further in the next five years, as the early effects of climate change and a global recession add their weight to the ongoing crises"
"accelerate the decline in living standards that the younger generations have already witnessed compared to earlier generations"
"the difference between the extremes of wealth is greater now in developed countries than it has been at any time in several generations"
"Law enforcement should expect continuing social and political polarization fueled by misinformation campaigns and an increasing mistrust for all democratic institutions"
"Access to [big data] will allow private entities to develop the means to exercise undue influence over individuals and populations at an unprecedented level"
"In the wake of COVID-19, Canada's governments have normalized operating during a respiratory pandemic... the damage to the economy and to the social fabric of the nation is ongoing"
Bank of Canada doing its best to act surprised that what Canadians have been saying since this inflation era started might be true. "Profit Led Inflation" aka PRICE GOUGING
"He cites data from Statistics Canada showing that at one point last year, the cost of a unit of labour had increased by a little more than 10 per cent since the start of the pandemic. The per-unit profit, meanwhile, was up by more than 70 per cent over that same time frame."
My cup overflows with anger toward these lying, deceiving, murderous, oil and gas companies. So this morning, I did something I've never done before in hopes the people coming home from their long weekends in Tofino and Ucluelet get the message.
Canada’s Far-Right is Planning a Convoy to Toronto to ‘Save the Children’. It’s Already Spinning Out of Control. - @pressprogress
Lead organizer, asked what this anti-trans hate festival is saving children from: “frigging education and all the stuff they’re teaching them in schools and the trans agenda and the math agenda”.
It's one of Canada's pre-eminent economists, Professor @trevortombe. As a person who was formerly involved in politics, I regularly relied on his reasoned research and revelatory insight.
Also, it was always good to see a public intellectual hold court and press for a fullness of dialogue in our shared democratic discourse.
Anti-trans protests happened on Sept 20 in almost every major city in Canada. It’s fucking terrifying, to be honest.
Hate doesn’t stop by itself. It has to BE stopped.
You can help in small and big ways: change your user photo to this, explain why to your family and friends, and go support the side of diversity & equality on Sept 20.
Look around your corner of the country and you’ll find the counter-protest. Stand with them.
Gee, a union leader gets arrested within minutes for "blocking a road", while the #Ottawa Police let fascists shut down the entire downtown core for weeks.
I love that Mark Zuckerberg set out to prove that his platform is more important, influential, and valuable than Canadian media agencies, but all he's managed to show people is how much value Canadian media holds, and for those of us who already have other social media avenues, how completely disposable corporate-owned platforms like Facebook and Twitter are. #cdnpoli
CBC was on a tear yesterday, with a whole slew of stories about Medicare showing a system in collapse.
One thing I didn't see a story about was lobbying, corruption and personal profit motives driving provincial premieres.
Everything that's wrong with our healthcare system goes back to capitalism. Every solution put forward by provincial governments has been more capitalism, so they can personally profit and soft-land on a private board of directors somewhere.
