The "New Outlook" demands that when adding your account, you also give Microsoft a copy of all your Gmail email, contacts, and calendar data.

The "Learn More" link confirms:

"Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers."

WOW.

Good time to switch to @thunderbird, folks!

Boss: Why haven't you done any of the work I gave you?

Me: What work?

Boss: From my emails!

Me: Oh, I deleted those.

Boss: WHAT?!

Me: I thought they were phishing attempts.

Boss: Why?

Me: The IT security training said typos and unexpected requests were clues to spot phishing.

By default, automatically blocks images in your emails from being displayed -- because many of those images may contain tracking code.

(Sometimes these images are tiny "tracking pixels" you may not even see).

Take your protection one step further by installing Origin to block all kinds of unwanted content in your RSS feeds -- it's now an official Thunderbird Add-on: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/ublock-origin/

Which do you prefer?

(For background: One of Thunderbird's core principles is the use and promotion of open standards - this focus is a rejection of our world of closed platforms and services that can’t communicate with each other. Our upcoming marketing efforts will really lean into this, and we want a long-term hashtag to accompany it.)

If you use forwarding actively, HEADS UP.

is now enforcing policy and as of midnight last night is bouncing email from ACM.ORG addresses that did not come through the ACM Relay service.

You need to change your email configuration to use the ACM SMTP Relay service immediately.

How should work: Send a colleague a downloadable csv file.
How my email now works since switching to :

  • Colleague sends email with file
  • Mail is send to quarantine
  • 2hrs later I'm told "we stopped this spam"
  • I release email from quarantine
  • I click on .csv file link
  • This opens Microsoft secure log-in portal
  • I wait for log-in code sent via email
  • Excel opens in browser
  • Excel downloads file as .xlsx
  • I manually open file on PC
  • I re-export file as csv

Unsubscribe from email should be easier.

  • I do not want to sign in to unsubscribe.

  • I do not want to take a so-called brief survey to unsubscribe.

  • I do not want you to ask me if I am sure more than once.

  • I do not want to be told I need to wait so many days before I am finally unsubscribed. —You signed me up immediately and you should unsubscribe me immediately.

  • I do not want you to email me a confirmation email.

OK! We've enabled manual updates from Thunderbird 102 to Thunderbird 115.

macOS and Windows users:
Click the App Menu (≡) > Help > About Thunderbird. You should see a prompt to update to version 115.

NOTE #1: If you're not currently using the final Thunderbird 102 release, you'll first get updated to Thunderbird 102.15.0.

NOTE #2: As always, Linux distros dictate their own update schedule, so your mileage may vary.
