" isn't a game engine. It's a advertising and malware network that merged with a popular game engine as a delivery channel and now wears its corpse as its skin"

This is fucked up. No other words for it. A REINSTALL is charged to game devs.

So, big news yesterday. I'm appalled at the impact this will have on the ecosystem, and at large. There's just no way this can lead to anything good for anyone.

is getting a lot of positive attention in reaction, so I want to address a few things. 🧵

If you have been using #Unity and you wanna jump ship to the nearest competitor, #GodotEngine is gonna be your best bet. The structure of a project isn't exactly the same, but it's similar enough that it won't take long to adjust.
Below, I'll give a few tips and talk about pain points you might run into, to help you try it out properly, and make an evaluation. #GameDev

Actually, big thanks to for elegantly demonstrating a huge part of the risk model of proprietary software.

I'm not a "Linux Guy" really but I started re-evaluating it lately, and I think it might not just be for the Tech Weirdos anymore. It can absolutely be a daily driver for a lot of game developers now!

If you're dumb enough to buy a new engine this weekend, you're a big enough schmuck to come to Unity!

A parody of the Big Bill Hell's comedy car ad. Voiceover text: Fuck you, indies! If you're dumb enough to buy a new engine this weekend You're a big enough schmuck to come to Unity! Incomplete packages! Pipelines that break down! Install fees! If you think you're going to find a bargain at Unity You can kiss my ass! It's our belief that you're such a stupid motherfucker You'll fall for this bullshit—guaranteed! If you switch to Unreal Shove it up your ugly ass! You heard us right! Shove it up your ugly ass! Bring your games! Bring your assets! Bring your user data! We'll sell it! That's right! We'll fuck your users over! Because at Unity You're fucked six ways from Sunday! Take a hike—to Unity Home of Challenge Compiling! That's right! Challenge Compiling! How does it work? If you can change your code straight in runtime And not get compiler errors You get no splash screen! Don't wait! Don't delay! Don't fuck with us! Or we'll rip your nuts off! Only at Unity! The only engine that calls you a fucking idiot! Hurry up, asshole! This event ends the minute after someone installs your game And it better not be pirated or you're a dead motherfucker! Go to hell-Unity! The industry's filthiest And exclusive home of the dumbest motherfuckers in charge of a game engine-guaranteed!

The Unity's new "softened" pricing and policy changes are NOT good enough and they don't fix anything.

The dreaded "runtime fee" stays!
The nuts CEO & board stays!
They got what they wanted.
They WILL do this again.

Self-reported install counts will still be a nightmare and I am sure Unity will track this silently anyway.

Unity already twice silently altered their ToS.
Another "pinky promise"? SUUURE.

Finish your Unity games, and never look back.

Things just got (more!) serious... @kenney has renounced their support for and will no longer endorse it. Kenney has had a profound effect on the indie community by giving many aspiring devs assets and tools to get them started, so this is pretty major IMHO. The next gen of gamedevs will be wanting access to those assets so they can just MAKE something, and Unity will no longer get that traffic. This must have been a tough decision, but I for one support it 100%.

PixelPerfectEngine, to gamedev

If you're a working with artstyle, and looking for an engine to use, maybe after all the debacle? Then I can suggest my own.

  • Written in D (quite similar to C#, save for the underlying framework).
  • Pixel-perfect graphics, no "pixel misalignment" due to mismatched assets.
  • Retro-inspired GUI.
  • Unicode text rendering from real bitmap fonts.
  • Built-in palette-swap effects, real-time color lookup.
  • Relatively low overhead and footprint (3-5MB executable files).
  • Software synthesizers for audio, one even has some feline-looking sine wave.
  • No per-install monetization BS, instead you can support me via either Patreon (https://patreon.com/ShapeshiftingLizard) or Ko-Fi (https://ko-fi.com/shapeshiftinglizard)
  • Fully , you can both check what's under the hood, or even completely modify the code for your own liking.

Ok, let me clarify this:

-Unity merged with a malware company last year.

-Unity is now saying it will be able to detect what is a first install. Which is impossible. Because some kind of malware would be needed to work on your system to be able to tell unity.

Oh, wait. Do you see where I'm going?

Hey, remember a decade ago when decided to charge a revshare on people using cross-compiled game engines in and everyone jumped ship to ? i.e. the exact thing Adobe was trying to prevent?

Oh, I was just wondering if anyone else did.
