In a letter to Apple, more than 60 human rights and environmental rights organizations pressed the firm to take action on Vietnam's detention of climate experts, saying it should weigh in given the country is a manufacturing hub for the iPhone-maker. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/04/11/asia-pacific/politics/apple-vietnam-climate-experts/

: "HANNO HAUENSTEIN: What was the main point of contention? The use of the wording apartheid and genocide? Or the boycott of Israeli institutions, which the letter invites readers to take part in?

I really don’t know because I have not received any further explanation. The rector did offer me a telephone or video chat at which he would further explain his views. I haven’t replied to that. This is a public affair. I think we all need to go on the record. So, it’ll be up to him to clarify that. There’s also a statement on the university’s website now. To me, most of this seems like smokescreen. It is a clear violation of the university’s own stated policy as well as of the very values they invoke with the name Albertus Magnus.

Those values are precisely values of academic freedom, freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, and open discussion. Whatever complicated rationalizations are being given as to why this proceeding allegedly doesn’t violate those values ring hollow to me. This also sends a very strong signal to all people in the university and scholars around the world: if you dare, say, express certain views on certain political subjects, you will not be welcome here [in Germany]. It has a chilling effect on people’s freedom of political speech." https://jacobin.com/2024/04/nancy-fraser-germany-palestine-letter

Alabama library staff locks their library after its board fires their director for not removing books with LGBTQ+ content from the Young Adult section.

The board wants to restrict kids under 18 from checking out books with "obscenity, sexual conduct, sexual intercourse, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender discordance." That would rule out the Bible & any other books with marriage or romance.

: "Meta blocked a newspaper’s critical report about it on Facebook and its other social sites for hours, sparking a backlash that intensified after the company appeared to subsequently block links to the website of an independent journalist who republished the report.

The controversy began Thursday morning when users noticed that all links to the non-profit newspaper the Kansas Reflector had been flagged as a cybersecurity threat and their posts were removed. About seven hours later, the paper said, most of its links had been restored, save for one — a column that had criticized Facebook and accused it of suppressing posts related to climate change.

Meta apologized to the Reflector and its readers on Thursday for what the company’s communications chief, Andy Stone, called a “an error that had nothing to do with the Reflector’s recent criticism of Meta.”

But on Friday, users who attempted to share the column on Facebook, Instagram or Threads, were shown a warning that it violated community guidelines. That seemed suspicious to Marisa Kabas, an independent journalist in New York, who asked the Reflector for permission to publish the text of the column on her own website, the Handbasket." https://edition.cnn.com/2024/04/05/tech/meta-nonprofit-newspaper-independent-journalist-alleged-censorship/index.html

"The isolated report of one Israeli heckler has been broadcast around the world as an instance of “anti-Semitism” after a performance by Northern Irish alternative comedian Paul Currie.

As a consequence, Currie has been banned from his entire Australian tour, with a whole run of shows cancelled at multiple upcoming comedy festivals.

Every comedian I’ve ever met has a heckler story, but I haven’t heard of a heckler’s unrecorded and uncorroborated tale doing so much damage to one working comedian. Worse than that, it’s based on a flagrant misinterpretation of the act."

Folks surprised by Jon Stewart's reveal of Apple trying to censor content, Apple has been manipulating media for years. You haven't heard about it, because Apple has been manipulating media for years.

My favorite example, was when Rian Johnson directed Knives Out, and MALICIOUSLY complied with Apple's ridiculous demands on Apple product placement.
