Another scan from the film I just developed in my bathroom: the view from Tunnel View in Yosemite Valley

(Glacier Point is nicer, but also a longer drive)

(Shot on Yashica 124G, Portra 400, self-developed in Bellini C41 kit, scanned on Fuji Frontier)

Glacier Peak Backpacking: Day 1

The first photo is the view from near my camp on Cloudy Pass. Today has been incredible but tough. Hiked 20 miles with 6400’ elevation gain. This is not like the PCT, it’s rough trails that go straight up for hours. But i’m so happy, I wanted an epic long weekend and Glacier Peak Wilderness is providing that in spades so far.

Glacier Peak behind sparse tall trees. It’s a large rocky mountain with several glaciers on the top half. Blue sky.
Rocky mountain with jagged ridges Light blue sky with small white clouds.
Trail through a forest of tall trees with brush on the sides of the trail.

S. of Mt Hood PCT Backpacking: Day 1

The smoke was looking to be bad at Steven’s Pass so I hopped on the PCT at Timberline instead after work on Thursday. Hiked 4 miles and set up camp. After the PCT departs the Timberline Trail, it enters a majestic forest heading towards Timothy Lake. Just before dusk the wind picked up and I received a possible thunderstorm warning. Luckily I packed my rain jacket.

Sandy trail through a grassy meadow. Sporadic tall trees in the distance partially block the hazy view of the cascades.
Trail though a grassy meadow towards the end of wildflower season. Tall green trees surround the meadow.
A trail on a sandy and rocky slope heads south further into the cascade mountain range. The hazy mountains can barely be seen in the distance under a partially cloudy sky.

A bunch of Bay Area cities own land in the mountains (Tahoe to Yosemite) and they run summer camps for families. Many of them with low income options. I’m going to the one run by the City of San Francisco, Camp Mather.

Oakland runs one too (Oakland Feather River Camp) and Berkeley runs a few (Echo Lake Camp and Tuolumne Camp). Who else has something similar?

Knife’s Edge Backpacking: Day 1

Very glad I decided to make the drive. I didn’t know what to expect but the views and trail are stunning. Lots of shade. I’m camped the first night a couple miles from Knife’s Edge and about 4 miles from Old Snowy Mountain. Should be on the ridge by sunrise so I can attempt to scramble up to the top of Old Snowy. Incredibly excited.

Rocky mountain along the PCT. A rocky mountain looms high above the surrounding mountain side. Sporadic trees on the hills with a beautiful blue sky.
Shoe Lake along the LCT. The light shimmers on the turquoise blue lake. Tall trees surround the lake except for some meadows on the right if the lake.
Mount Rainier peaks it from behind a ridge. A trail gently slopes down the side of the barren ridge. Very few trees are on the ridge under a blue sky.

Are there any good designed for more than two players that are good to play , i.e. not likely to be blown away by the wind?

When I asked for a wind-resistant board game at the local board game shop (7th Dimension Games), they suggested Hive, which looks like fun for two players, but I often chill with more than two people. Notice the solid game pieces that aren't going anywhere, and no board to be caught by the wind. (I don't care so much about portability, on my porch.)

It’s fantastic to have a little piece of California right here in Bonn 🌳❤️

One of the great perks of living in California was being surrounded by beautiful nature everywhere 🏞️

Now, when I find myself missing the magnificent sequoias and redwoods, I love visiting the botanical garden in Bonn where they have a small section dedicated to the flora of California and the Pacific Northwest.

Pacific Crest Trail: Part 1

Mount Hood looks stunning from up here on Table Mountain. I was informed by a frankly terrified-looking day hiker that black bears were seen up here last night. I’m proceeding with caution and will update you if I encounter them. 🐻🗻☀️

Timberline Trail Backpacking: Day 1

Hiking the Timberline Trail this weekend, which circumnavigates Mount Hood. Currently hiking CCW from Timberline Lodge to Elk Cove. Knocking out about half of the mileage today to relax the next two days. I slipped in Newton Creek and soaked my right foot. Having a great time though, so good to be back out in the wilderness!

A view of Mount Hood from the Timberline Trail. Glaciers surround the peak. Rocky trail on the side of Newton Canyon.
Upper Heather Canyon Falls along the Timberline Trail on Mount Hood. Smallish waterfall surrounded by trees on the left side and bushes on the right.
Mount Adams from the Timberline Trail on Mount Hood. Some snow on the peak with a forest in the foreground.

Spring has begun and magnolias have bloomed beautifully. I just mounted an old $20 Soviet lens to my Sony camera and took some photos. Check out the spring dreamy look! 🌸 Thank you for being there!
