Time and again, we see CEOs and similar executives make horrible decisions that massively damage a company both financially and in terms of reputation and the perpetrator is forced to resign, yet receives so much money as a going away present you'd think they're being rewarded for their fuck up. Why??
Political disintegration is a persistent feature of world history. The Collapse of Complex Societies, though written by an archaeologist, will therefore strike a chord throughout the social sciences. Any explanation of societal collapse carries lessons not just for the study of ancient societies, but for the members of all such societies in both the present and future.
I wonder if American society would de-polarize and actually get better if all the people addicted to the outrage machine that our media has become just... Stopped.
Stopped buying newspapers. Watching CNN, MSNBC and Fox. Effectively pulled the plug?
I went to space and discovered an enormous lie | Ron Garan
What astronaut Ron Garan saw in space changed his life forever – here’s what it taught him.
A curious phenomenon often occurs when astronauts travel to space and look out on our planet for the first time: They see how interconnected and fragile life on Earth is, and they feel a sudden responsibility to protect it.
I do not think my fellow #geoscience folk have a grasp of what is coming, and I wish we took more advantage of the arts.
We live to tell each other #stories. This is what #society and #law are built on. They are reflections of the stories we tell ourselves of the proper way to live a good life at a given time...
Thoughtful deliberations by the 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘋𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 on how a small, underfunded #society journal in the #humanities can convert to #OpenAccess, even no-APC OA (#DiamondOA). Notable for the felt "cultural imperative" to become OA, awareness of the options, and love of print. https://popjournal.ca/issue05/nelson
"Negativity is part of life. Unfortunately, social media is increasingly becoming toxic, and I think that it infects all of us if we stay there too long. Just like if you stay in a gas leak too long, you're gonna die. It's not like you're going to die being on social media, but I think you'll be changed."

This is 100% accurate.
The fediverse has a chance to be different. I hope we take it.
Social networks, even those built on the principles of decentralisation and federation, cannot be more free and open than #society as a whole. I used to have an account on pixelfed.social. Now it's gone. With all my 8 followers and 8 photos. 5 #photos were sceneries, 3 showed me in the #nude (with CW). The latter were of sentimental value. I didn't spend much time on that instance. Followed Server Rules. So I can only guess at the reasons. Not a single notification. Just erased. #NormalizeNudity
... Baby Boomers and Gen Z have something in common that’s often overlooked: Bias is shaping the way we talk about them, allowing stereotypes and myths to drown out facts and reality.
"The Death Spiral Effect: a vicious cycle of self-reinforcing dysfunctional behavior, characterized by continuous flawed decision making, myopic single-minded focus on one (set of) solution(s), resource loss, denial, distrust, micromanagement, dogmatic thinking and learned helplessness."
People need to realise you can't change a trans person's gender identity. No matter how much society, parents or family try to force it. No matter how much trans people damage their own mental health by trying to erase their own gender identity, it's impossible. Do you think trans people don't try to change it themselves? We learn, eventually, the hard way, it isn't possible.
Practice shows that those who know how to please the authorities and the wealthy live well in Russia. The ways to please are, of course, different. For example, I watched and listened as Mr. Mikhalkov scolded some Bykov. They say that Bykov is a writer. I have not had to read him. So this Bykov believes that Putin carried out...
I'm sure some people will have filtered the [dolls name] for [reasons] including the current #Movie but here is another incredibly well threaded essay by @ryanhoulihan on why she's such an important figure and a touchstone or Rorsach test for many aspects of modern western #society and #culture
(1/6) Just one more week until the Ars Electronica Festival takes over Linz, becoming the epicenter of the #mediaart world. The festival begins with a pre-opening walk on the evening of September 5th, starting at the Mariendom and visiting various cultural and artistic institutions. This event will feature performances and engaging presentations, igniting excitement for #art, #technology, #science, and #society – in essence, the future. https://ars.electronica.art/who-owns-the-truth/en/highlights/#pre-opening-walk
People have been using boxes on wheels to transport themselves and things for millennia. The issue is how fast #MotorVehicles can go, which in turn determines how far it is practical to #travel in one.
There will always be a need for weather protection and cargo capacity, but #society would look very different if motor vehicles were restricted to 20 mph, like Class II #ebikes.
