Why are Golden Parachutes a thing?

Time and again, we see CEOs and similar executives make horrible decisions that massively damage a company both financially and in terms of reputation and the perpetrator is forced to resign, yet receives so much money as a going away present you'd think they're being rewarded for their fuck up. Why??

The Collapse of Complex Societies

Political disintegration is a persistent feature of world history. The Collapse of Complex Societies, though written by an archaeologist, will therefore strike a chord throughout the social sciences. Any explanation of societal collapse carries lessons not just for the study of ancient societies, but for the members of all such societies in both the present and future.

I wonder if American society would de-polarize and actually get better if all the people addicted to the outrage machine that our media has become just... Stopped.

Stopped buying newspapers. Watching CNN, MSNBC and Fox. Effectively pulled the plug?

Freedom in technology must include freedom from technology.

We must not create societies where the price of admission is owning a device controlled by one of two trillion-dollar US corporations.

We must safeguard people’s access to public services and the everyday necessities of life via alternate methods.

Technology should always be a progressive enhancement.

Do not let Silicon Valley privatise your access to modern life.

I went to space and discovered an enormous lie | Ron Garan

What astronaut Ron Garan saw in space changed his life forever – here’s what it taught him.

A curious phenomenon often occurs when astronauts travel to space and look out on our planet for the first time: They see how interconnected and fragile life on Earth is, and they feel a sudden responsibility to protect it.

Social networks, even those built on the principles of decentralisation and federation, cannot be more free and open than as a whole. I used to have an account on pixelfed.social. Now it's gone. With all my 8 followers and 8 photos. 5 were sceneries, 3 showed me in the (with CW). The latter were of sentimental value. I didn't spend much time on that instance. Followed Server Rules. So I can only guess at the reasons. Not a single notification. Just erased.

People need to realise you can't change a trans person's gender identity. No matter how much society, parents or family try to force it. No matter how much trans people damage their own mental health by trying to erase their own gender identity, it's impossible. Do you think trans people don't try to change it themselves? We learn, eventually, the hard way, it isn't possible.

People have been using boxes on wheels to transport themselves and things for millennia. The issue is how fast can go, which in turn determines how far it is practical to in one.

There will always be a need for weather protection and cargo capacity, but would look very different if motor vehicles were restricted to 20 mph, like Class II .
