One thing that really stands out in the data on transgender people who've had surgery is how unusually rare regret is among trans people, as compared to other patients who have surgery.

Now, researchers are starting to ask why, and consider whether there are lessons to be learned in the way trans people are prepared for surgery that could help other patients too. #trans #medicine #journalism #research #science

BREAKING: Conservative Republican Governor Mike DeWine has just announced he will VETO the ban on gender affirming care that recently passed the legislature.

This comes after tireless efforts by families, LGBTQ+ activists, and the heads of Ohio's nationally recognized children's hospitals.

A reminder to my Family - especially those who are early in transition:

It's Okay to Lie to Gatekeepers

Psychs/Therapists who are writing your letters, Doctors who prescribe you hormones or surgeries, ESPECIALLY insurance companies who want to get out of paying for any of it. Tell them the stories they want to hear in order to get the care you need.

If they're going to require you to fit some narrative about how you "always struggled with your gender as long as you can remember", then tell them about that time you cried at the Halloween store when your mom wouldn't let you get the Wonder Woman costume - whether it happened or not. Tell them about how you always wished you had dolls and instead had to quietly make due with secretly having tea parties with your GI Joes or rocking your Transformers to sleep. Whatever.

If they say you have to have "Real Life Experience" as your gender for X months, they're not going to hire a PI to investigate. Just tell them how you've been wearing women's clothes and how your friends and coworkers call you your name and pronouns that you asked them to call you. You're a woman, you were wearing clothes, therefore you have always been wearing women's clothes. You don't have to mention that you haven't asked them to call them your REAL name and pronouns yet - they're all calling you by the name and pronouns that you asked them to originally.

If they're refusing to increase your HRT dosage unless your labwork shows your levels are "too low", skip a dose/do a shot a few days early/whatever to make the numbers tell the doctor what they want to see.

Whatever. Do what steps you have to do to get the care you need. It's okay.

Did you know that trans women can, and sometimes do, breastfeed?

An extended right-wing meltdown over this biological reality led me to dive into the science of human lactation. The piece first appeared on Assigned, but if you missed it there, now it's on Slate.

The ban on women in is hitting me particularly hard.

I'm a chess enthusiast (in keeping with my careful curated rep as an expert strategist).

It's just this wtf moment that pulls the wind right out of my sails.

I know really well that lots of folks don't like us. But ... how are we ever gonna overcome a level of pure unhinged bigotry that says we can't be trusted play chess?

Obviously ALL women should be insulted by this move.

The Washington Post today reported at length on the story of Artemis Langford, a girl who joined a sorority at the University of Wyoming and has faced threats, harassment, stalking, and a lawsuit that eschewed legal claims in favor of pages and pages of anecdotes and bile.

This is a gift link. Artemis' story needs to be heard. The story makes it clear her life is in ongoing danger right now.

On this day 90 years ago the Nazis ransacked the first gender clinic in the West.

On May 6, 1933, a Nazi student group marched to the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin. With members of the SA, they ransacked the institute and looted its library and archives. Days later, the stolen books, artifacts, and clinical files were destroyed in one of several public book burnings organized across Germany. A bust of Hirschfeld was paraded through the streets on a stick before being thrown onto the bonfire.

Support trans women. That includes the woman from the hood. The loud one.The sexworker. The dropout. The one whose hair aint laid and outfit ain't always on point. The one with clear mental health issues. The one with nowhere to go. Not just the models, writers, and public figures.

A trans girl who socially transitioned in second grade and has never gone through testosterone-fueled puberty is at the heart of a massive controversy in Florida, after her high school principal and 4 other school staff members were suspended by the superintendent after he received a tip that a trans youth was playing volleyball.

This is the reality of trans sports bans. More here:

since "X" is promoting a PrəgerU story on the topic, I will re-up this recent piece: "Spotting Anti- Media Bias on Detransition." it discusses ideologically motivated detransitioners who garner all the media attention, shares statistics showing how rare the “mistaken and regretted transition” narrative actually is, plus evidence & research that stricter gatekeeping won't do anything to decrease the frequency of detransition & may actually increase it (no paywall)...

In the New York Times last week a pair of reactionaries argued against the term "assigned sex at birth" in an impossibly dumbed-down discussion that ignored the existence of intersex people, the reason the term exists in the first place.

On Assigned, we hold ourselves to higher standards for both scientific accuracy and thoughtfulness.

Therefore, please enjoy this opinion essay by a medical doctor arguing assigning sex is harmful and unnecessary.

Honestly couldn't believe my luck last night- Jamie Reed got annoyed with me on Twitter and started answering my questions about why there was false information in her sworn affidavit alleging wrong doing at the Transgender Center she once worked at.

Reed seems to believe that the actual truth of her allegations is less important than her raising broader questions about gender affirming care.

That's... not how affidavits are supports to work.

But that also means that where we don't have lots of rich research, especially on trans folks, myth and community lore creep in. This week on , we're going to look at What We Know About Trans Brains, and talk about how we build scientific knowledge along the way!

England recently banned new prescriptions for puberty blockers for trans youth, pending a study on their efficacy and safety.

Cisgender children with precocious puberty will still be able to access the drug to treat social and emotional issues associated with early puberty.

We decided a primer on what these drugs are, how they work, and what the concerns are about them would be of use.

Mira Lazine has that coverage on Assigned.
