#Help: I need recommendations for resources to learn #business financial concepts and #calculations.

I have advanced #math knowledge up to and including multivariable calculus. My background is in physics though.

I am a business owner and want to make some financial models for #marketing budgets for fun (but also hopefully useful).

But I never studied #economics or #finance in any way.

“Accept the reality that AI will destroy creative careers” sounds an awful lot like “accept the reality that crypto and NFTs are the future of commerce”

In both cases we see:

• Hype driven by companies and investors with vested interest in said technology
• Grand predictions of the future and comparisons to disruptions like the internet
• Obscure, complex tech that most people don’t use
• Extreme resource consumption for tech to function
• Fear and panic from media

Okay. I know exactly why #Threads is taking off.

It’s a stripped down version of Twitter that reminds people of what it used to be like….

BUT WITHOUT ADS

People coming from Twitter and Instagram think Threads is such a nice experience because THERE ARE NO ADS RIGHT NOW

They are not used to that. So they think is exceptional.

Zuck will start running ads once everyone is hooked.

The hardest part in trying to write about #Threads is figuring out how to compassionately describe both sides of the divide.

On one hand, I’m rooted in the #Fediverse camp and you have all seen me making fun of the cringe and status-chasing on Threads.

On the other hand, I’m a marketer and a long-time lover of many mainstream web spaces. I don’t hate a lot of popular culture. And I missed so many of the people who only now migrated from #Twitter.

So how do I approach this with kindness?

Serious question… why is buying a particular issue of a digital magazine or newspaper not a thing?

Like if I wanted to read just one particular article in paper form I could go to the store and buy only that one issue. But online I have to either deal with a paywall or sign up for a full subscription?

I can’t support #Substack in light of their announcement today. They have a choice whether to support fascist content, and acting like they are forced to platform these views is unacceptable.

I am planning to move my newsletter to a different platform, and will be working on figuring out the migration the rest of this week. I am very relieved that I chose to build my platform as a newsletter, since I own my audience and can take my subscriber list with me.

I’m reading this book that I picked up for $1 in Boulder last month, called “Crucial Conversations”.

It’s about improving how you communicate in difficult situations.

And there’s this list of questions to reflect on when you feel yourself getting defensive in a conversation:

• what do I really want for myself?
• what do I really want for others?
• what do I really want for the relationship?
• how would I behave if I really wanted those results?

That last question really shook me

I joined #Mastodon a year and a day ago.

I was scared of losing Twitter and uncertain if the Fedi would accept my marketer self.

Now, I am here. I've switched instances to Hachyderm, gotten 2,620 followers, ended up at the top of instance trending pages, attracted up to 500 likes and boosts for posts, grown a newsletter, and most importantly... found new friends.

The more I learn about #history of the Soviet Union, the more I realize just how much my native #Ukraine was actively stifled, prevented from developing and innovating, and forced into this image of a backwards and hopeless nation.

Our people have always been so phenomenal, talented, ambitious, kind, and creative. But they’ve been punished, scared, and intimidated into a terrible subservient existence for so many decades and centuries.

I love Ukraine, but god history is unfair.
