adam, I used to be proud that Boeing planes were made in Seattle. Now I’m actually scared to fly on them. The McDonnell Douglas merger was the worst thing that ever happened to American aerospace.
This whistleblower’s death is profoundly suspicious.
nullagent, In the wake of a Seattle cop(the VP of the cop union) getting caught laughing about a woman the department had killed, SPD ends contract with the company responsible for reviewing body cam footage.
Why is this even a contract managed by the cops? Really seems like anything involving bodycam management should not be run by the corrupt cops.
bhawthorne, @shuttersparks @nullagent The function of police in the USA is to protect wealthy people from the rest of us.
shuttersparks, @bhawthorne @nullagent I believe that's what I said, since wealth and power are fungible.
EZLorenzImagery, It’s rarely cold enough here to experiment with frozen bubble photography. This weekend is a great opportunity at 19F. One of my shots out of many :))
ozten, Yo #Seattle I need to give you my Mid-century modern 1935 Baldwin Acrosonic upright piano. Boosts appreciated as it is hard to unload pianos these days.
Full details https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/d/seattle-mid-century-modern-upright/7657211141.html
stevesplace, @ozten I gave one away, thanks to help from a storage locker attendant. Good luck.
DemocracySpot, The Craigslist FOR SALE post has been deleted.
KevinFreitas, The clouds literally parted enough in #Seattle to enjoy the first half+ of the #eclipse. Dig that huge sunspot! #eclipse2023 #WestSeattle
Orange solar disk largely covered by the Moon with a dark sunspot just at the boundary of both.
Orange crescent Sun at solar eclipse maximum in Seattle.
White crescent Sun visible among clouds.
Lizette603_23, @KevinFreitas Oh thank you, it's just grey on grey here in Pa
KevinFreitas, @Lizette603_23 That’s what I was expecting, honestly, and exactly what it’s been here since this morning.
cascadepine,
Toastie, Indigenous people in the United States experience one of the highest maternal mortality rates of any ethnic group.
Now there's a guaranteed basic income program in #Seattle for pregnant #Indigenous people.
KevinFreitas, Permeable sidewalks #FTW! It’s drenching rain in #WestSeattle this morning and look at the difference between these two surfaces. Better for walking and better for the water table!
futurebird, Are they as durable as regular sidewalks? NYC is one of the places where people wear the sidewalks out with their feet sometimes before the ice and weather get to it.
InkySchwartz, @loke @KevinFreitas Well they permit water infiltration into groundwater so that can counter subsidence and replenish groundwater in an impermeable surface situation. That can be useful if your locality depends on groundwater for municipal water supply.
As for climate specific results from this? Either the groundwater replenishment for resilience or these permeable materials create less or no CO2 compared to concrete or need no hydrocarbons like asphault. But I do not know how they are made.

cascadepine, Unexpectedly ran into another one of Thomas Dambo’s giant troll sculptures while out walking in a park. This time on Vashon Island. I knew they were around - it’s pretty amazing to just walk along and suddenly there it is. This one has a crown of birdhouses.

indianewswatch, ‘She had limited value': Seattle cop on death of 23-year-old student from Andhra
Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old student of Northeastern University was killed after she was hit by a Seattle Police vehicle on January 23.
#seattle #AndhraPradesh #JaahnaviKandula #NortheasternUniversity #racism #SeattlePolice #SPD #OPA #UnitedStates #india
Frances_Larina, "The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating..."
Are they seriously expecting anyone to believe that the president and vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild will be objectively investigated? This is like the police investigating themselves. Oh wait; it actually is the police investigating themselves. Again.
While we're at it, do they really think anyone will believe that the elected guild officials don't represent the values of the police force?
JoeChip, It's even worse:
"Shortly after saying “she’s dead”, Auderer laughs and says, “It’s a regular person," referring to Jaahnavi. He then says, “Just write a check — $11,000, she was 26 anyway, she had limited value.”
The regular person comment is a dead giveaway. Contempt for civilians is an ingrained part of police culture.

LadyDragonfly, Mastodon, I need your help. I'm looking to relocate to a new instance to start off the new year but there's so many to choose from. What's a good fit for me? I'm a #scottish expat, currently living in #Seattle. I toot about #politics, #music, #poetry, running a #smallbusiness, and the occasional #meme. I am a member of the #lgbtq community, and a proud #trans woman. I have two #cats and a #husband who I love dearly and in very different ways. I tend to post with a heavy dose of #wit &/or #snark.
mentallyalex, @LadyDragonfly best way to be
mc, @LadyDragonfly @elala feel free to join my instance :) have a coffee and some nice company ;)
KydiaMusic, It’s like we’re summoning the Rainbow Bridge
#aurora #AuroraBorealis #SolarStorm #Seattle
Aurora Borealis looking like a curtain of colored beams of light in the sky, with vivid pink, purple and green hues radiating downwards.
Aurora Borealis looking like the aliens are abducting us, with vivid pink, purple and green hues radiating out from a central point. The dark silhouette of a fir tree is at the top of the frame.
KydiaMusic, Not the most flattering picture, but probably the coolest selfie I’ll ever take.
KydiaMusic, It felt so weird coming back in from the cool air and night magic to a stuffy house where even just the hall light being on felt too bright. I wanted to keep the lights off and let my eyes stay large and dark to see the hidden mysteries. I wanted to just stay outside and bathe in the light of the Aurora Borealis.
I feel like it seeped into my bones. I’ve eaten food from the Realm of the Fae.
juliewebgirl, I'm kinda speechless.
Ok so because of Covid, there was no #BiteOfSeattle for 3yrs. Then Cheq bought it & are the new owners. (I didn't realize anyone "owned" it.)
They launched an app 6mo ago.
Here's the appalling rundown of how to ruin a beloved local event (since 1982) in one fell swoop:
Vendors:
✓ required to use the app
✓ paid ~$5k for a spot
✓ had to pay 16% of all sales to Cheq
✓ forbidden from taking cash or use their own POS systems*fun links to follow

ProPublica, The Cleanup of Seattle’s Only River Could Cost #Boeing and #Taxpayers $1 Billion.
Talks Over Who Will Pay Most Are Secret.
The company once described the Duwamish, one of the country’s most #contaminated waterways, as “a natural collector” for its wastes.
The Port of #Seattle and Boeing accuse each other of failing to pay their fair shares for the cleanup.

mkandle, @ProPublica not the first time #Boeing has ruined the environment, and probably not the last. Of course they want taxpayers to clean up their mess 😠
gairdeachas, Washington State residents, you have fewer than 2 weeks (Oct 30) to register to vote online before the Nov 7 general election!
And if you've recently moved, your change of address needs to be in by Oct 30 as well.
If you're not in WA, but still in the US, visit https://vote.gov/ to lean how to register and vote in your state.
birwin, @gairdeachas Good advice.
Also, we should take this moment to remind citizens of other states how damn easy it is to vote in WA if you have a stable residence.
I get my ballot in the mail a couple weeks early. I fill it out at my leisure. I drop it in a box at my local library (or if that’s inconvenient, drop it in the mail).
There are no lines ever. Nobody gets arrested for handing out water bottles. Nobody has to take time off work.
jomo1337, @gairdeachas that’s super helpful! Also, I believe that you can register and vote in person on the same day at a County elections office. From the Wa Secretary of State -
“To register by mail or online, your application must be received no later than 8 days before Election Day. Register to vote in person during business hours and any time before 8:00 PM on Election Day.”
cascadepine,
KatM, It’s wild to be looking at houses where you grew up and seeing that in no way could you afford to go home again.
PandaChronicle, @KatM oh geez! I couldn’t afford to buy here on Whidbey any more either.
PandaChronicle, @thepoliticalcat @KatM
I wouldn’t be able to buy my current house now. ☹️
dennison, Bit of a weird question. Does anyone know about a chicken that got loose in the Seattle Central library today?
dennison, So, here's what I know about the Library Chicken. My son was at the Central Branch doing microfiche research up on the 9th floor.
At 5 pm, he said he sat up to take a break and a saw full grown, live chicken run, full speed, across his line of sight and launch itself (in that weird way chickens do when they try to fly) down the stairs.
Several minutes later, he says he saw two security guards running in the direction of the chicken.
By this point, I assume, the chicken had escaped and security was left with a mystery. That, or there's a chicken haunting the Central Branch tonight. Either are acceptable in my view, really.
I, and apparently loads of other people (judging from the boosts), would love to have the 411 on the Library Chicken.
If you, or someone you know, works at the Central Branch, do fill us in!
twobiscuits, @dennison Opinions are divided on whether they should throw the book at the chicken 🐓 📔
vantablack, boosts appreciated!!! :boostRequest:
does anybody in #seattle wanna trade my ukulele and case for a laptop of some sort?
as long as it can run linux and browse mastodon/the web without too much difficulty i'll gladly take it. portability is a bonus since i want this to bring with me places and work on writing and such while out
this uke is too small for my hands lol
vantablack, hell, i'd even take a pinephone if you had that QWERTY keyboard case thingy to go with it
vantablack, if you give me something that fits in one of the pockets on the Vest Of Holding i will be especially happy lol
justyourluck, Crap!
Three of Mount Rainier's glaciers have melted away
"The National Park Service officially removed the Stevens Glacier from its inventory because it had grown too small and there was a lack of evidence that ice was flowing, such as crevassing.
...both the Pyramid and Van Trump glaciers were too fragmented and small to be considered glaciers.
There’s just a few ice patches the size of a Little League field."
