    @DataDrivenMD

    It's probably more accurate to say that it's a key differentiator between mastodon and every other social media platform on the fediverse or otherwise (eg, the *oma platforms, the *key platforms, probably friendica, certainly though that's a different beast, etc)

    ... including soon to come future mastodon.

    Just got a comment from a fellow chastising me for talking about the Fediverse beyond Mastodon.

    He thinks we’re dropping the ball on Twitter migration by not focusing 100% on Mastodon.

    However, 30% of the Fediverse doesn’t run on Mastodon.

    Some server software, like Friendica, was on the Fediverse 6 years before Mastodon was created.

    Sorry we’re not shutting things down just because Twitter migrants recently showed up.

    Well, just confirmed that bans on @fediversenews work as they should.

    A troll just tried to post here.

    Their troll post doesn't display on @fediversenews, nor is their post boosted by the Group.

    Even better, they're not notified when they are blocked 😉

    Until comment controls come to Friendica, moderation here will mostly have to be reactive.

    I will continue using venera.social for groups until a better solution comes along.

    maegul,
    @maegul@hachyderm.io avatar

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews Not sure what "comment controls" are, but provides a "lock" action to moderators/admins of communities (which are like sub-reddits) which, AFAICT, prevents the user/account from making any further comments in a thread/post.

    ed, to fediverse in Should separate instances of Lemmy be topic-based? What else, if not?
    @ed@battleangels.net avatar

    @cyclohexane @fediverse IMO Topical instances work best, it helps provide an identity and focus. Visitors to the instance see a local timeline of like minded posts, like minded communities e.g https://mander.xyz/ (Nature/Sci).

    There’s simply not the same tension with feeling the need to post relevant content to a local timeline as there is with Mastodon, because you are sharing directly to communities on connected instances as well.

    And because of the connected nature, instances can be small e.g. a knitting instance with only 10 users, connecting to a motorsport instance connected to lemmy main.

    Things like , , and newer niche apps cause reactions like: "What is this?", they look like back end is fine but nobody is in charge of the design and the UI has no direction whatsoever. It's the general culprit in the programming world: A back end developer thinks everything is fine when we add a CSS framework and that's that.

    If we just get the UI right everywhere, we get more people to the . I just wish there was more /design people willing to contribute.

    @rolle@mementomori.social avatar

    @mitexleo I would like to contribute to many things. But I have limited time and energy, so I just focus on the things that I myself use and are the easiests, to save myself from burning out. Right now the is my sole focus and perhaps later the CSS/UI in general. is out of scope time/energy-wise for me right now.

    I too hope that more excited people have motivation and time to help, but I'm well aware of the fact that all the good ones are overworked and busy with projects they make money from, me included. But one can hope. :bunhdlurkaww:

    I'm test driving for public groups.

    Like , /kbin can ban trolls from participating in groups.

    Unlike Friendica, you can remove posts local to where the group is hosted.

    Unfortunately, the offending comments still appears in user timelines because other Fediverse servers do not delete after comments are removed locally.

    Another alternative could be which supports groups through "Channels". However these do NOT federate.

    So the docs cover the essentials. Seems pretty good. A community has moderators specific to that community, who can also moderate over federation from another instance!
    Also, it seems a user can be locked out from a specific thread without being banned from the community.

    Creating a new community is open to all lemmy to and following one subscribes you to the group like with friendica (just in case you didn’t know)

    https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/users/04-moderation.html

    eshep, to fediverse in Mastodon monoculture problem

    @butter, @dessalines, I've grown quite fond of Friendica for that very thing, following things, not just people. Not only does it let me follow topics via tags, but things like and get added as "forums", plus I can follow any or feed. All of these are added the same as adding any other contact (follow). All of these different ways of following things get listed in the same area of my account, as "contacts", where they can be easily separated into to multiple groups (lists). Each followed hashtag, forum, contact group, or protocol type is always listed down the side of my page where I can simply click on it to filter my current feed.

    I know that other / interfaces such as , , , , , and have some/all of these capabilities, each to their own extent. However, having played around extensively with all of them, I've come to find that is the one that works best for me. And at the end of the day, this is the only thing that matters. It may be a bit time consuming, but trying all the things is the best (only?) way to see how they'll work for you.

    It’s not a terrible idea to create a network of interest-based Mastodon servers, but there’s an easier way to do the same thing.

    Create one server that can host groups. Allow people from other servers to participate in those groups.

    This is what I do with venera.social, and it’s what I will do with calckey.social once Channels start federating.

    ajsadauskas, to fediverse in Lemmy shows how Fediverse-connected message boards can work. So is it time for a Fediverse-connected general purpose message board platform (like phpBB)? Is anyone working on this?
    @ajsadauskas@aus.social avatar

    @ajsadauskas Across the internet, there's a host of niche communities on message boards and web forums, using platforms such as phpBB and its various competitors.

    Is there scope to get these communities on the Fediverse?

    Over the past couple of weeks, I've been trying out Lemmy (lemmy.ml ), which is basically a Reddit-like platform on the Fediverse. (For those reading this on Mastodon, this post is actually a reply to a post on Lemmy, meaning you can read it on Lemmy, on Mastodon, or elsewhere!)

    It's shown me that the concept of a Fediverse -connected discussion forum certainly can work.

    So is there scope to either add ActivityPub to any existing message board software platforms?

    Alternatively, is there scope to develop a fediverse-connected general purpose message board platform?
