I'm trying to convince the last friends I have left on Facebook, X, Threads, or BlueSky to join the Fediverse. Some have tried but felt a sense of loneliness. Nowadays, many people are so used to doing what algorithms suggest that they can no longer make independent choices.
My timeline here, on the other hand, is beautiful.
I see what I want, I follow people who post what I like, and no one tells me what I should do. Freedom may come with a "cost," but whatever it is, it's worth the effort. Always. #Fediverse#Mastodon#SocialNetworks
Oh, Zot! Nomadic Identity is Coming to ActivityPub: This could change the Fediverse forever
Years before there was Mastodon and even ActivityPub, there was Mike Macgirvin who created the Zot protocol, which Hubzilla runs on. One of Hubzilla’s most amazing features (apart from also integrating with Activity and the Fediverse, and having cha ...continues
The mass enshittification of every major Internet platform hasn't exacty been a slow and subtle process, but I feel like generative AI has really slammed down the gas pedal (Twixter, Reddit, GitHub are prime examples).
I'm wondering (and kinda depressed) about YouTube being next, because there really isn't anything comparable out there. Vimeo's the only one with like quality, but their model creates an access barrier. Dailymotion? ha! And PeerTube's name makes it sound like an XXX broker, to say nothing of massive quality limitations, rampant low-quality conspiracy nonsense, and a whole bunch of (completely understandable) limitations regarding size and number of files.
One of the most frustrating things in modern technology is the effort spent trying to artificially restrict abundance. Take, for example, this tale from museum-worker Aaron Cope: I was out with a friend who worked for Twitter and I asked them whether it would be possible for the museum to “create 200,000 Twitter accounts, one […]
I read that #Meta has launched #Threads and many don't understand why it's not fully usable via the web but only through a dedicated mobile app. Meta isn't interested in letting us talk but rather in collecting as much data as possible. Browsers have become (more) skilled at protecting us, while apps can have almost complete access to our mobile devices, gathering data that an average person couldn't even imagine. And our mobile devices have become the safe (or should I say, the exposed pantry?) of our lives. #privacy#datacollection#SocialNetworks
An interesting read about centralized social networks preying upon decentralized networks. Written by @ploum with a featured image by @davidrevoy.
Many Mastodon admins have been contacted by Meta representatives. They have all asked for off-the-record discussions. That’s telling, of course. Fortunately most (including our own mas.to admin, @trumpet) refused their invites.
🆕 blog! “On The Fediverse, No One Knows You're A Liar”
One of the reasons I'm still on the original Mastodon.social instance is that I am vain. I joined shortly after the project was announced and, as a consequence, I have a "joined" date of 2016 and a user ID of under 10,0001. This doesn't make me an "elder statesman" and is rarely useful beyond bra…
Journalists are realising Mastodon and the Fediverse is not so complicated to use after all
As Notopoulos writes, the Fediverse is a better, more user-centric social media concept than the one we currently have, where you amass followers on a single platform then lose them if that platform dies or becomes bad and you decide to quit. Federated social ...continues
Twitter now blocks visitors from viewing tweets, profiles unless they’re logged in: No longer usable then for blogging publicly
Twitter has now begun locking visitors out of the platform unless they’re logged into their account. Visiting any Twitter page other than the homepage without being signed in will automatically forward users to a page where they can login or set up an account ...continues
Nostr: A simple, decentralised, open protocol that enables a truly censorship-resistant and global social network
Nostr (acronym for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is a protocol that connects clients via relays to exchanges notes (posts). Anyone can run a relay if they wish. A user is identified by a public key (not an e-mail address, user ID or phone numbe ...continues
I've no doubt said this before but I'm not really looking for new social networks. Here seems a pretty good fit for me.
I run an open source desktop and a de-googled phone for flips sake. I'm not looking to be an influencer or ***t post all day long.
So for those that stay here. You're probably stuck with me. #SocialNetworks#fediverse#Mastodon
“I, for one, didn't have a hard time navigating, and neither was it confusing when it came to "tooting" a post instead of "tweeting" it. The options for the desired action that appear for posts on your feed are pretty much replicated from #Twitter”
The Twitter alternative - #Mastodon | Express Tribune
Bluesky: Two months after its launch, Jack Dorsey’s Twitter alternative comes to Android
Since his departure from Twitter in late 2021, co-founder Jack Dorsey has been working on an alternative to the microblogging site, now owned by eccentric billionaire Elon Musk. Bluesky was initially rolled out to iOS devices in February, and it’s now finally ...continues
Red line: Estimated average number of daily active users on Twitter in 2013.
Green line: About the time Twitter introduced the algorithmically sorted home timeline that users where up in arms against.
People today: Social media without algorithms just doesn't work! We have to let the ruling class control what information we receive, there's just no other choice. Deciding for ourselves, hah, so naïve!
Bridgy Fed connects your web site to Mastodon and the Fediverse (and possibly Bluesky and Nostr later)
Bridgy Fed turns your web site into its own Fediverse account, visible in Mastodon and beyond. You can post, reply, like, repost, and follow Fediverse accounts by posting on your site with microformats2 and sending webmentions. Bridgy Fed translates those pos ...continues
Social networks are molded by the incentives presented to users.
The 'creator payments' on former #Twitter that #Musk introduced have turbocharged engagement farming. Which emotions are most effective? Fear and Hate.
I’m always very surprised to see that #academics, who are at the main actors of #research and #innovation, are so far behind when it comes to use “new” technologies like #socialNetworks ...

The Myth: Is the Fediverse Really That Complicated?
Let me start out by saying how I think this myth became the reality for many… Obviously, a few journalists declared the Fediverse to be complicated, and this got picked up quickly by those who were considering whether to open accounts in the Fediverse (I’m no ...continues
My favorite part of this #RedditMigration is how the name #Lemmy reminds me of the classic #videogame#Lemmings. There are two interesting parallels. On the one hand, Lemmings have the essentials of what a game needs: great balance between challenge and fun. The current scream of #socialnetworks goes in the same direction of returning to the essentials. On the other hand, in Lemmings we play as a #community. No community, it's #gameover.
