i am simply requesting that every application or website that displays relative dates ("1h ago"), no matter the reason, implements a tooltip that shows the actual timestamp on hover. is that too much to ask?

No. Stop. Just stop!

You are NOT looking for a UX designer, the correct term is UNICORN.

I wouldn't touch this job with a 10 foot pole, they clearly don't understand UX design (or are too cheap to understand you need more than one person to build a product)

To be fair, a UX designer that knows a bit about CSS and has some passing understanding of HTML/JS is an asset! My point is that you don't replace your frontend engineer with a "UX Designer"

I'm freaking tired of product situations where "No" isn't an option. Giving options of "Yes" and "Maybe later" is specious bullshit and it results in a fucking creepy, unpleasant experience.

I'm still looking for a UX Designer, someone who has expertise in user interface design specifically.

If you're someone who has a User Experience design background, please get in touch with me by DMing me, and please be sure to include your email address!

Here is ONE simple example of how designers are hampered with contributing to

  1. I'm helping fix the documentation of a project (pick something small right?)
  2. I make the PR (They use codespace on GitHub)
  3. LOTS of work for me to understand how to do the PR but I get it in
  4. The reviewer makes tons of comments (Great!)
  5. But makes 'suggested changes' which I accept
  6. Which creates a few branch
  7. Which means my CodeSpace can no longer make changes
  8. My PR is in limbo

I'm looking for any recommendations of blog posts/articles that explore the potential limits of tech or examples of or going wrong in ways that show it's limits.

Bonus points for anything that discusses use cases.

There are no end of "positive" examples, they are plastered everywhere! I'm assuming there is something a bit calmer and measured out there.

Any suggestions?

My talk just went live! I was so excited to present in person this year, I had so much more energy in front of a life audience and the questions in the hallway afterward were excellent.

Everything I'm doing with and is meant to be a conversation so if you have any questions, please let me know.

Trying to improve the wrong dimension of will only lead to waste. Learn the difference:

Wonky products are confusing; their mental model doesn't match the user's. Janky products are conceptually fine, but buggy or inconsistent.

Jank manifests only at the hi-fi stage of development, and can be solved by UI redesign or backend optimization. However, wonk must be caught at the conceptual stage with lo-fi tools. You will NOT be able to fix it on the layer.

Hallo zusammen!

Random UX thought: sometimes I want to default to negative language, like warning someone about the downsides or that something isn't supported. Depending on context, though, you might want to turn it around and see how you can frame it positively!

For example, instead of "This version of the app is outdated and not supported," can you share, "There is a new version with new features and updates! Get it here"?

For #ActivityPub the question of "Why use #LinkedData?" has never been answered. There should be clear merits to wade through all the complexity that this choice brings, right?

Yes, its ultra flexible, and you can define your own semantic #ontologies, and theoretically it could provide a robust extension mechanism to AP protocol. Except that right now it doesn't.

What's the vision of a Linked Data #Fediverse? What great innovative #SocialNetworking #UX would it bring, that makes it worthwhile?

We're already at 25 merged contributions for what would become the 46.x release. There's still a lot of low-hanging fruit available there for new contributors.

Has anything substantial actually happened in MacOS in the last 5 years?

While it has changed of course, the majority of it falls under the category of either look like iOS or work better with iOS. But that's not innovation that corporate strategy. I honestly can't point to anything non-trivial that's changed.

For any MacOS users out there, is there anything recently that you actually use and appreciate? Am I missing something?

At GOV.UK we avoid disabling buttons.

If the user submits a form with a problem, they get a useful error message telling them how to fix it.

Disabled buttons are hard to make accessible for people with low vision, and can't easily be focused using the keyboard

I'm working on an idea to help organize and fund leaning research. The problem? I'm rather inexperienced with how funding works in this space. Curious if anyone here could help me get the right perspective. My understanding is that there IS funding for Open Source, but it's fairly complicated and takes a lot of paperwork . The few folks I've talked to that have tried to get funding found it a bit exhausting. Are they wrong?
