Half thinking of starting an hashtag here, about the dire, dire state of UK (global?) higher education. Sharing nuggets of senior management decisions, neoliberal language, and overall slow collapse.

Won’t work of course because most of us can’t risk honesty, but honestly: the everyday reality of what is happening deserves recording in all its depressing and damning detail.

Morning at the Crane Pools
Bosque del Apache NWR, NM

Over two dozen Sandhill Cranes are standing in the icy pool—they spend the night there as protection against predators, such as coyote. Around them are many, many Snow Geese who also spent the night here. Very soon all will take to the sky to head off to forage in the neighboring fields.

The brilliant color lasted in the sky for no more than fifteen minutes this morning before turning back to a uniform gray. (Skies are blue now.) Wife spotted it on her way out the door; I was busy with the dogs. Shouted for the boys (getting ready for school) to come quick. Everyone shared the view. Simple —always be ready for it. 😊

Have a good day.

Classy? 👎— Rep. Patrick McHenry ordered former Speaker Nancy Pelosi to vacate her Capitol hideaway office by Wednesday, in one of his first acts as acting speaker. Pelosi is in CA to attend the funeral of Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Sassy? 👍— Pelosi: “Office space doesn’t matter to me, but it seems to be important to them. Now that the new Republican Leadership has settled this important matter, let’s hope they get to work on what’s truly important for the American people."

Another ridiculously warm early winter day. About 50°F/10°C again — and it's only morning, Christmas day. Had to go up on the roof this morning — not looking for reindeer hoof prints — and didn't see any hiding down in the woods with the local whitetails — but to retrieve a couple of Frisbees. Found an unusual one 👇🤨 ... Visitors??? 🤔

Have a great day.

Jews from Arab lands are the missing piece of the Israeli-Palestinian discourse by American Syrian Jew Lisa Sayegh May 7, 2024

"...Over the past years, I have often been frustrated when I find people do not understand the trauma of the 700,000 Jews from all over the Middle East who were violently expelled from their countries in 1948 and how it resonates today. My Persian college roommate said that his family could trace their roots ~1,900 years back in Iran, until relatively contemporary expulsion. LOL, happy my free off-the-curb Nordictrak eliptical (which I repaired) is getting used by the family, since they have to pass it going in and put of the garage. (For exercise, not laundry).

RunRichRun,
@RunRichRun@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I've picked several XC skiers off the curb. Always in pretty good shape & come back to life quickly with just a bit of TLC. I've given most away, but keep one in the basement & one in the garage (although it needs a better monitor; current one = flaky). They're such simple, elegant exercise machines. NordicTrack and Concept2 (rowing ergs) have always had great customer service, too, IMO.

BTW, end of January = when New Year resolutions expire = best time to scavenge or buy exercise gear!

RunRichRun,
@RunRichRun@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I pick bikes off the curb -- discards, tossed out on recycling and trash days -- year round. Lots of satisfaction fixing them up and even more donating them -- HIAS will take the children's bikes around here; I drop adult bikes with a local social services agency in Philly.

It amazes me what people throw out in wealthy communities.
