PSA:
“if it was important, you would have remembered it.” And “if you cared, you would have remembered.“

Neither of these claims have any basis in reality. Importance, and caring have no correlation to whether a memory is formed.

These sentences only serve to gaslight people about a chemical, process that they cannot control.

Please spread this knowledge.

Please stop gaslighting people with memory issues.

Practical example of this that affects millions: people with Have less dopamine in their brains (oversimplification). Dopamine is one of the things that must be present to form a memory. Less dopamine = fewer memories (again, oversimplification).

ADHD people are incredibly forgetful and spend our lives being gaslit by people in our lives who have heard these 🐄💩 lines, and parroted them without thinking.

Today in AI bullshittery:

Nvidia has trained an LLM on their codebase to save senior designers having to answer junior's questions about what some code does.

I don't know how many times i have to say this, but these are not search engines. They are not inference engines. Their answers are 100% "what would be a plausible sounding string of words to respond to that input?" that's it. That's all they do.

For those of you considering starting something with Patreon, it's fully moved into late stage enshitification.

This poor creator was given $583 by their patrons, and Patreon took $109 of it in fees. 🤦‍♀️

Go use Ko-fi, they're still run by humans who actually care about creators and don't try and screw them at every opportunity. Also consider Ghost.org. They're working hard to make an Open Source Patreon style platform w/ NO fees beyond simple hosting cost.

I want to take a moment to talk about code . Like How accessible your source code is for your fellow

Practically speaking I count as a "Low vision" user. My need for larger fonts means that lines wrap earlier for me than most users. Wrapping sucks, so when i write code I typically use 80 characters as an upper limit to width. There are computing history reasons for 80 but it also just works.

The problem is other dev's perception & reaction

Discussing internationalization () issues at work.

A coworker noted that only one customer has asked about it. We have theaters across England and Ireland. As of 2021 there were 880,000 people in England and Wales that don't speak English well, and 160,000 that don't speak it at all. + plenty more in Ireland.

Don't confuse a lack of request for internationalization with a lack of need for internationalization.

Kagi.com has improved the of their maps service (demo of it with voiceover in link) and asked for folks who can provide real feeedback about accessibility improvements that should be made.

Another month, another reason I'm happy to be giving my money to Kagi instead of letting Google treat me like a commodity.

Latest Changelog https://kagi.com/changelog

Also, just communicating what you've done to users. What an idea!

> 80% of Walt Disney VFX workers have voted to try and unionize. Earlier this month the VFX folks from Marvel voted to do the same.

If you're not aware, the VFXs treatment of its workers has been unquestionably immoral, and cruel (like ~100hr weeks frequently without extra pay) and it's been getting worse for years.

TIL about CSS's font-variant-numeric functionality. If you use , and like the idea of being able to add a little bit of polish to your text, check this out.

It can do a few things to improve how you represent numbers. Here's the most visually significant one.

Kagi, once again showing what happens when a search engine's values are aligned with its users' instead of trying to find ways to SELL the users.

I asked about macOS email clients and one of the results had a red shield. That's not normal, so i clicked it. 24 ads / trackers detected, and since they don't earn money when you see ads, they are motivated to warn you that that link might be something you want to avoid.

I just stumbled across @MLE_online 's ~7min tutorial on how to make a 3D printed part look like a metal one with paint that's chipped off.

Very straightforward, and involves a technique i would NOT have considered.

You should watch it.

Also, thanks For the tutorial Emily.

A friend of mine has an odd issue. The palm rejection on trackpads refuses to work for him, so he can't rest his hands on the laptop without it thinking he's mousing. He's taken a Tré and stuck some corrugated plastic over the sides of the trackpad. It was a great proof-of-concept but horrid for day-to-day.

So, I'm developing a 3D printed skin to slip over it. Holler if this, or something like it would be useful for you.

a 3D rendering of the slip-on skin I'm making for my friend. It's a three-quarter view showing blue plastic. Most notably there are two rectangles that cover the sides of the trackpad so that he has somewhere comfortable to rest his palms.

Holler if you need to support a different sized bottle / syringe, or would like one that can hold hypodermic needles.

So, a question for undiagnosed late realised @actuallyautistic folks.
Your work makes a change and it saves them money but plays actual havoc with all of your traits that you're still learning to recognise as autistic. You tell them about the impact it has on you and they completely dismiss your complaint, saying its fine for most people.
If there was a diagnosis it'd basically be indirect discrimination. But there isn't, and no prospect of one any time soon.
What do you do?

Needing glasses to drive actually means a person has a vision disability. The thing that sets glasses apart from almost all other disabilities is that the normal response that EVERYONE expects is to get the person glasses.

As a result of society's default response being to provide accommodations for this disability no-one thinks of it as a disability, because almost everyone who has it, has adequate accommodations.

I reached for my digital calipers the other day, and they were flickering like an LCD in a horror movie. Unsurprisingly, I did not have spare LR44 disc batteries on hand.

I decided "Eff this. I never want to need my calipers and have them not work because some battery died." So, I ordered these. Mitutoyo is a brand known for good precision, but I couldn't bring myself to spend the $100 to $300‡ for their more precise ones. These were only $35.

@_thegeoff I have a Starret 359 Universal Bevel Vernier Protractor from the early 1920s. It's one of my favorite possessions. Partially because of its ridiculous accuracy that I can trust, and partially because it's a wonderful example of an elegant, and simple solution to a really hard problem.

I feel like, as a society, we've forgotten (or never learned) to value elegantly simple solutions to problems.
