This is intriguing to say the least. I’m not impressed with CBC putting an article on their front page titled “I love my electric car but I didn't realize my life would revolve around charging it”.

Turns out this person doesn’t have a way to charge at home, which is where most people charge 95% of the time. 🙄

Why is bad planning from this person on the front page? Why is it news at all?

ShanonRose,

@steveroy yeah, I saw that. Didn't click it cause I didn't want to give it any more traction so I'm glad you put this out here.

Hey, if you're looking for good Canadian climate journalism, check out Canada's National Observer.

I'm willing to pay for news. I pay for entertainment online, so why not news, too?

But I wish I could buy news ala carte sometimes in the way I can rent a movie. I subscribe to two online news sources and that covers most of what I want to read. I don't subscribe to the New York Times or the Guardian, but The Guardian (UK) gets my money sometimes because they have a way to toss them money without the entanglement involved in subscribing. (Wikipedia also gets money from me this way.) NYT links I just ignore. They are not my local paper so I don't want to subscribe, even for an "introductory rate."

Is this weather normal?

Use the new CBC Climate Dashboard to find out.

You can search for your city and add it as a favourite. Come back whenever to see how current conditions compare to the past.

Updated constantly with the latest weather data.

(This is the first version of the dashboard. Later in the year it will be expanded to include precipitation, air quality and CO2 emissions.)

Via @emptywheel:

How did we decide to call the targeting of vulnerable people by the far right "the Culture Wars"?

No one is calling up Target and making physical threats bc they sell shirts with crosses on them.

How did the come to give sustained attention to a bunch of far right wingers yelling "woke! woke! woke!" rather than the fact that their only policy proposals are to beat up Disney and undermine sound health guidelines?

The preview image on this graphics piece had me scratching my head ... was it a graphical glitch caused by Twitter's poor image resizing algorithms (which have messed up plenty of my textmode screenshots in the past)? ... Or was it intentional?

Either way, it's kind of cool ... it's like a photo slowly becoming an Atari 400/800/XL/XE screen.

This morning on Assigned we're looking at how the sausage of extermination is being sold to the mainstream public by mainstream conservative columnists.

Jonah Goldberg wrote today in the LA Times about the upside of political violence targeting brands who advertise to the queer community.

He didn't refer to violent threats, of course. No, no, those are just "excesses" of the "anti-woke campaign."

It's wired in, it's blatant, and it's old news, but to me it remains pretty remarkable that the establishment press in the U.S. uses the term "conservative" to mean any action the extreme right wing favors.

The more extreme the act, the more "conservative" are the actors!

Thus, the Freedom Caucus in the House — the members of which are the most ready to let the U.S. default on its debt — are routinely described as the most conservative faction in the government.

There is no “self-driving mode”.

Publishing these terms and descriptions only serve to advance Tesla’s and ’s lies and are an immense public safety hazard.

DO NOT register on newsie . social or journa. host - both have ongoing severe issues regarding enabling fascism and transphobia. Both are blocked by most of the good people here - if you choose either you've limited your reach.

Pick an instance that's okay with you and the type of journalism you do, or self-host via your organization.

My exercise for the day: there really aren’t any universally agreed upon definitions for such terms as “moderate”, “liberal”, and “conservative” among news organizations, yet they’re used all the time as if readers, listeners or viewers somehow know what they mean. Time to stop using them in favor of 1) specific party affiliations and 2) concrete examples of what someone said or how they voted in order to suggest where they fall on the political spectrum.

Feasible?

Impractical?

My shorthand for the approach we most need in election coberage is this:

"Not the odds, but the stakes."

How does this work in practice? Margaret Sullivan answers that in The Guardian today. "Now’s the time to think about just how bad a DeSantis presidency would be."

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/25/ron-desantis-florida-record-presidential-campaign?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Not how DeSantis plans to outwit Trump and then succeed in "the general" (itself an insidery phrase...) but what life would be like if he took power.

Not the odds, but the stakes.
