I just heard the bad news that I am probably going to need a new job starting in July.
So, before beginning the regular search, I wanted to ask my Fedi friends if anyone could use a capable C++ programmer with lots of graphics and networking experience. I wouldn't mind a change, so I'm open to anything. Even other programming languages! It would be awesome if I could use Linux to do the work. 🐧
Locations I would consider are: Central Europe, Melbourne, Sydney or Remote
Claudia Goldin just won the Nobel Prize in #Economics. She’s best known for her work on how “Greedy #Work” limits equity and the advancement of women in the workplace.
“Goldin argues for systemic workplace reforms rather than the hearts-and-minds type of change so often advocated by girlbosses, self-help writers, and corporate feminists. Goldin, refreshingly, rejects any Lean In–type advice as ‘quick-fix notions’ utterly unable to address the fact that our ‘work and care systems are relics of a past when only men had careers and families.’ Greedy work, to be blunt, assumes that the worker has a wife at home. It therefore forces one-half of many couples to, if not stay home full-time, then prioritize the domestic front, choosing less well-paid jobs that offer greater structure and flexibility so their partners can work whatever hours their bosses demand.”
A reasonable rule of thumb in UK #politcs is that if the Tax Payers Alliance doesn't like something, then it would likely benefit society;
to hear that they are against the four day #working week, leads me to think that the shadowy (corporate?) funders of the TPA are unhappy that #workers might be able to spend a little more time thinking about the inequities of the current system & a little less time being ground down by the world of #work.
I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough #people are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people #work even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.
It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their #communities when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second #job, a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.
We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a #billionaire's window every time they think of it.
The arbitrary 8.5-9 hour workday drives me nuts, because a lot of the time, I really only have 3 or 4 hours worth of work to do. I generally work quickly and I value my time. Can I make a decent living doing something that gives me this kind of flexibility?
When my oldest was about 3 or 4 years old, she was hanging out with me at my work desk. I saw a pop-up on my computer that said "USB device not recognized," and I looked down and saw her with a USB cord in her mouth.
"It's SPICY!" she said, and kept touching it w/ her tongue.
A new Shelter/National Housing Federation report argues that investing around £12bn on building 90,000 #socialhousing units would see a positive return within 11 years.
Getting people into homes would reduce benefits costs, save the #NHS money & more likely see those in proper homes (back) in #work. It would also, of course, boost employment in construction & associated trades.
The paradox for UK #politics is while a long time horizon is acceptable for #nuclear#energy, for homes, not so much!
hey, you know those "tell me what you were doing when you crashed" boxes you almost never fill out?
I just want you to know that the last... 3? crashes I've worked on have all had BRILLIANT clues for what was wrong in there from users. If you have ANY idea what you were doing, and can put it into words? please, please do, your assistance is HUGELY appreciated. Even just "I was adjusting the app settings” can be a clue!
(also, remember that it's a human reading it eventually, be kind!) #work
Welcome to planet Earth. A random rock in the Universe where the most "intelligent" species only cares about trade. Trade this for that. So that the members of its species spend all of their life trading. That's all it is.
It is not about creating smarter and relaxed humans, and a nice environment for everyone. Not about exploring and learning, or enjoying. It is about trading.
Welcome to the Protestant #Work#Ethic where if you are not #working for 16 hours a day you are a Sinner that will Burn In Hell. Unless of course you are rich in which case you are Blessed by God and can go to Heaven without lifting a finger.
heard a story on a podcast that some Christian missionaries showed these rural Cambodian farmers how to double their crop yields. the missionaries came back a year later and were surprised the Cambodians had grown basically the same amount of crops but the farmers were like “yeah this is great, we got everything we need for the year and only had to do half as much work”
and if that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about the current North American work #environment I don't know what will
So, please boost for reach if you can. I have to do something about all the stress from work. Our workplace has what appears to be an Employee assistance program/service. Like, counselling and such. Does anyone have any experience with EAP's, or EAS? Is their confidentiality for real, or have any of you found them leaking info to your bosses and such? I just, can't keep going like this.
Are there any good jobs out there where you can show up, do your work, and then just leave when it's done?
