OnePlus Pad vs a Low Cost Laptop! Can it beat a Surface Laptop Go 2? https://youtu.be/CaTC1yZ1OKk

Having a little fun with a COMPUTE POWER comparison. If we match the price, can the new OnePlus tablet take out a nice student-grade laptop?

In 1991, my Bulgarian roommate's Mom in Bulgaria heard about "computer viruses" and freaked. She called her son and sternly warned him to be very careful around computers, and take care of his health. He tried to explain that computer viruses don't affect one's physical health. But she was just Mom. Wouldn't hear a word of his protests. He finally agreed to her terms. He teaches Computer Science now.

Designing a new SSD bay out of sheet metal for a product. It's slowly kicking my butt. It's a surprisingly amount of little things coming together.

Imagine designing a computer and deciding that having a single interface that is simultaneously the management interface is a brilliant idea.

Ah yes, nothing more secure than having the management interface exposed to any and all networks I get on.

What in the world goes through the heads of hardware engineers?

My only question is ...why? You still have to go to the place... (not an online system just machine rather than paper ballot) First? Used in Toronto municipal for years.

I like paper with people counting... Just the least likely to be f&*ked with... but maybe I am just old. I grew up without or phones in your hand.

Always worried that, if it is / someone knows how to f&*k with it.

I have received the tiny Japanese netbook! Shipping was surprisingly fast, the netbook actually arrived before the replacement SSD (I'm going to dual boot Windows 10 LTSC and some flavor of Linux). Just running a quick driver backup first, since Nanote doesn't seem to make their drivers available for download.

Nanote P8 UMPC box. For used hardware, the packaging is in surprisingly good condition.
Nanote P8 UMPC, with my slightly above average sized hand for scale. It's a tiny device, 7" diagonal and weighs just over a pound.

Power to the Voyager spacecraft!
Over the 45.6 years since launch, Voyager instruments have gradually been shut off as power from the RTG has reduced.
It is almost time for Voyager 2 to shut off another instrument, but engineers have found a way to keep it going for another 2-3 years. A voltage regulator circuit, that keeps the voltage within limits, will be shut off instead.
See graphic below for Voyager power levels and instrument status.

Here is some data on the 1970s era computers onboard the amazing Voyager spacecraft, which are still humming along after 45.6 years in the harsh environment of space and without any service calls 🔧

Hey! I just reached 100 followers here on Mastodon, thank you! A few words about me for those who joined recently for the music. I'm Davide from France and I have many interests. You may have noticed I compose , but I also like circuits, vintage , . Depending on the period, expect posts on those areas (and more).

A Nixie clock I built in 2007, using a small PIC microcontroller.
Headlights of my 1972 Lancia Fulvia.
A vintage computer collection: Commodore C128D and VIC20, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Sharp PC-1260. A Datasette, a Sony videoprinter and a Sony PVM monitor complete the picture :-)

I had a weird dream that I cannot remember if it's a real repressed memory - or I have a damn creative imagination...

I remember an older that was represented as a town. Every executable was an NPC, directories were buildings and houses, and files were furniture and loose items.

You navigated the "city" as a playable character that could idly chat to the NPCs (executables) or run them.

Did I just have a crazy bizarre dream, or is this real thing?? Lol

Well masthead.social died so it's new account time.

Hi! I'm James (@jamesfcarter) and I run Starring the Computer, a website that chronicles computers that appear in movies and on television. Ok, so it's a bit niche, but that's what the internet is for, right?

Anyway, if you've got a few minutes to spare, you might find a visit to https://starringthecomputer.com diverting.

I have 2 and hate them both for different reasons. I have a desktop that I hate to sit at. I just realized I don't want a laptop. I want my desktop to be more powerful and I want the peripherals to be able to go to different rooms in my house. I'm thinking like an umbilical, lol.
Is this a thing? Or is it a fever dream sort of idea?

ZeNeece,

@davep Yes, that's what I need! I've built my before, but not something that Frankensteins them together. I have been trying to come up with a way to do that. I don't have anyone techier than me available here unfortunately. But the Internets have not given me a good solution. I know I'm just missing something simple. I am not as smart as I wish I were.
