If you're fed up with all the unbalanced bad news we're constantly exposed to if you go onto the mainstream media, I've found there is a hashtag that I'm now using and following on my feed to increase my mental wellbeing so I see more heartwarming stuff about the communities around the world and what they do for each other.

I like the idea of knowing how much people care about each other, and the people that do things simply because they can. The vast majority of us just quietly get on with being good people, in our own little ways.

Let's and and and and this great little and makes sure everyone knows it exists for all our benefit.

A friend who served w/some of the most experienced feminist negotiators in the world as a key lobbyist for U.S. commitments to IHR agreements like the Vienna conference & Beijing Plan of Action, sends me this statement “signed by many of us who actually worked to get rape recognized as a weapon of war…, to create mechanisms of accountability, & [set] strategies for collecting unbiased data & evidence,” re Israeli & US govt efforts to use rape to whip support for genocide.

I just found out that in the past few months there has been work happening in @gnome to allow for encrypting user home directories using homed : https://thisweek.gnome.org/posts/2024/02/twig-136/#home-encryption

It appears as though this would put each home directory inside its own LUKS container that would be locked when the user logs out or the hardware suspends. This would be a major improvement to the security profile of on the desktop!

Currently, on most systems (including Linux) regular user data is only effectively protected by system encryption when the hardware is completely turned off, but not when it is suspended.

The internet has decided — again — that Chris Pratt is the worst Chris, after reports that he and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, demolished a 74-year-old house by modernist architect Craig Ellwood in order to build a 15,000-square-foot residence. "They also tore up all of modernist legend Garrett Eckbo's original landscaping, effectively turning the nearly one-acre lot into one flat slab," reports Dwell. Here's the full story, including images of the house. To sprinkle some positivity on your day, we want to know, who is Hollywood's best Chris? Tell us in the comments if you're rejecting these options in favor of Rock, Guest, Walken, or some other Chris.

Of course there were things to do; there always were, and some of them could even be listed in the "important" column.

But at the moment, nothing seemed more important than standing in the yard, overlooking the bay filled with sailboats, and just letting one's mind glide from one thought to another, as if it too were sailing on the bay.

We still have some warm and sunny weather here. The nights get chilly though. So the cats are enjoying the balcony catio while it's still warm.

The catio would need a few improvements, but we need to move as soon as we can get the funds together. The next catio will have all metal or wire mesh instead of netting.

Because the two boys Leo and Little Sonic, keep chewing on it. They don't do or even try it with wire mesh.

Purrs from the kitties to all!

4 cats watching birds from our catio balcony. Black kitty girl Lisa is sitting on our small table, black cat boy Little Sonic is sitting on the balcony railing, and the tabby cat boys Leo and Hero are sitting on the carpet laid out on the floor.
Tabby cat boy Leo. He's walking along the railing of our catio balcony.
Tabbycat girl Lily looking up. She's hanging out on our balcony that's been turned into a catio.

For first time buyers, its ever more the case that without help from the Bank of Mum & Dad they cannot afford a of their own.

In one year (according to Savills). the proportion of FTBs getting financial assistance with deposits (purchases) has risen from 41% to 61%; just one more way that the UK is a country for rich folk.

The less affluent cannot afford to buy while the rich expand their property holdings.

I'll say it again:
solving the requires more social housing!

does anyone know where Mastodon’s rules for exactly when a post gets put on the Home timelines of the people who follow me, and whose timeline it gets put on are documented?

the rules can't be that every reply I make gets put on the timeline of every person that follows me, right? (??)

Often I reply to people and they seem to get put on the timelines of a lot more people than I expected, I feel like the rules are different from Twitter's rules in a way that's confusing to me

update: now the Mastodon docs explain under what circumstances your replies show up on your followers' Home timeline! https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/#home-feed-visibility-for-replies

(thanks to @Claire for explaining to me how it works so I could make a documentation PR!)
